IT'S THE CLUELESSNESS THAT KILLS ME

need to share/vent. i'm on this mass e-mail list of rock/metal people. mostly label people. don't ask me how i got on it. anyway. got this e-mail yesterday from someone who works at ONE OF THE VERY MAJOR MAJOR LABELS. LIKE THE MOST MAJOR. he was writing to take note of the fact that soundscan - as of this year - has a chart for new vinyl sales. here is what he wrote:

"Here's something this group will appreciate...although I still can't fathom who under the age of 40 is actually driving this vinyl revival and whether they're actually PLAYING the damn things or just framing them on their dorm room walls for cred points. Amazing."

here is what i wrote back:

No offense intended, but if you work for a record label, maybe you should look into who is buying records! Granted, my record store is used only, but I sell a LOT of records to people under 40 every week. And every week someone over 40 will come in, look confused, and say "people still listen to those things?"

he might as well be the guy who came in my store and said: "wow, i haven't seen a store like this in 30 years."

EXCEPT THAT HE ISN'T THAT GUY HE IS A GUY WHO SELLS MUSIC FOR A LIVING.

this was before he quoted 38 special to his cheerleader ex-girlfriend during the basketball game and lost the game for the team.

it's this kind of ear to the ground expertise that's served the record industry so well these past few years.

i never got a response from that guy. a couple of other people showed their approval of my message. then the list got weird. no conspiracy theories, but i feel like i missed some messages and the list address changed!

insurance salesmen came in today to try to get us insurance (which would be nice) but yeah, the older of the two dudes was totally blown away and the younger guy was like "yeah man all my friends have record players."

some guy last week brought up a village people record and said "you don't remember them!" and i said, "the village people?" and he said "no, records!" "You're too young to remember them!"

this happens, like, once a week.

see, the thing is, its not that i don't remember, its that THEY forgot. they haven't bought records in, like, 25 years. i never stopped. they did. and they should be ashamed of themselves.

i love when people who haven't bought a record in decades tell me all about how cool records are.

i met a nice lady today who worked in the brill building! she brought me some pretty cool 45s. sixties pop ya know. dave clark five, some vocal groups, that kinda thing. she's gonna bring LPs next week.

True charity shop story, today:

One old dear:
'They're very valuable these days. Very rare' gestures at three not rare LPs in my hand.
Other old dear - gestures at LPs:
'They're the old 78s' they'll be (voice drops) two euro!' (like she's named an outrageous figure)
Me:
'Ok: ow much are these?' (points at singles)

OD 2
'oh the 45s - they're a euro'

OK

'We had loads more earlier'

Why do they tell me that?

'One man was in, bought an original Chopin 78: an original !'

'Do you need a bag?'

'No thanks' point at record bag.

'Ah - you know what you're looking for; like that man earlier....'

Bye now....

"i mean, i never liked CDs [says man who bought 30 billy joel CDs]. it's just all those 0s and 1s rattling around. sounds so cold."

an older guy (early to mid 40s?) came up to me at work seeing that i had a package of records in my hand and asked me "hey is that vinyl?" i said "ya, what are you into?" and then he starts spouting off some crazy techy audiophile stuff. never a mention of the music he was into. a few weeks later i saw him selling these speakers on our forsale message board for 5k (originally 17k)

are there speakers that retain their value? cuz i think i would buy them instead. seems like a big hit to take.

scott seward, Friday, 12 March 2010 19:13 (fourteen years ago) link

so remember that group BIG DADDY? they had an album on rhino where they did doo wop and rockabilly covers of current hits. like the cars or blondie or the knack. stuff like that. well, it turns out someone already did the whole joke in 1972 on the one and only album credited to Godfrey Daniel. apparently members of the Amboy Dukes were involved. it's pretty funny. they do purple haze and whole lotta love in 50's style.
