In a fit of drunken madness I just bought a Linn LP12 record player. I currently have a recent Thorens TD170 which IMO is a piece of shit, it basically broke within a month of going out of warranty.
Basically this thread is to either reassure me that buying a Linn record player was a good idea or to announce your own reckless purchases.

wowee, don't they cost a bundle? supposed to be worth it though. you really do need a top of the line table for all those audiophile-quality punk singles of yours.

haha I know, they really deserve to me heard in their intended glory!
like I said, drunken madness + my friend whose opinion I kinda trust who reckons it's like the best record player in the history of the universe.
Basically I got my wife a job at the same place I work so I got a £500 "refer-a-friend" bonus. So that's where it went.

nice! my advice to anyone here without children is: buy as much as you possibly can before you have any! kids, that is. cuz it changes things in a big way. or, even better: NEVER HAVE CHILDREN. there are enough of them. that way, more money for records and turntables. i look at my children and all i see is all the records i can't afford to buy. hahahaha!

I'm lucky, both me & B have siblings with kids so we don't have any obligations there.
Hey if I put it in perspective that's like 3 Crime 7"s. Which would I rather...?

and if you must have children the only other advice i would give would be: open a used record store. that way you are just "buying for the store". or just marry rich.

I went in $2500 deep for a new system recently. It was up for about two months before my kid got old enough so that I had to put everything away in the closet. Cambridge Audio amp, phono pre-amp and CD player, Rega P2 turntable and Shure needle, B&W speakers, good quality connectors. Shit sounded god-like. But it will have to wait a couple of years before it sees the light of day again.

Ah, so the kids used to turn the Audiolab power amps on and off a bit (and so blow the internal fuses, so I kept a packet of spares handy) but the Gyrodec is a good four feet off the ground and the Copland/Audiolab pre just below that... so, just build high if you can.

i convinced my girlfriend to buy a turntable! thrift store i work at, technics sl-b100, $9.99. i priced it and everything. then it needed a power cord, $8.00-ish. then the belt in it was 2 too many inches in le circumph. so there was that. turns out she also needs a preamp. i think she'll be happy with it but i'm feeling like i tricked her! but ay now we can sift through crates together.

That's cute. My wife doesn't like music all that much but as soon as I got a turntable she became all about the records. She loves flipping them over and dropping the needle and stuff.

My wife bought the new Rega RP1 for my birthday. Really loving it so far. Also got a new Bellari VP130 preamp.

My system is out of the closet and back rocking! My kid is old enough to turn everything on and off and crank the volume so I keep everything plugged into a surge protector and only use it when he's out of the house or sleeping.

It's funny, my copy of "Baby I love you so" Colourbox was previously a bit fuzzy on the bass, and here was me thinking that I'd played it so much I'd worn it out. Then I played it on my new turntable (above), and it was as good as new!

I don't know where to put this question, but can you guys recommend a good cartridge for around $250 or less? Which ones are the best overall for around that price?

I'm not affiliated in any way (I'm in NZ, not Jersey) but I've had nothing but awesome service on carts/styli from this place: http://kabusa.com/ - very helpful if you've got questions, excellent range & cheap (especially when compared with NZ prices & his shipping is cheap). Website is cool in a 1994-ish way too, tho that may be something of a hindrance :-)

Pre-emptive bump for buying a new turntable.
Pro-ject Debut or Rega RP1? The Rega gets good reviews but is still quite new so there isn't much else to go on. van smack, are you upgrading your cartridge? Is the stock one no good? otoh, I know quite a few people with Debuts and they all say they're great.

Late '70s BSR Quanta 420 I got to play 78s on. Five bucks! Not considered a very good player on the whole, but for 78s this is nice. Pretty full, clear sound:

Anyone know a good place to get a Technics 1200 serviced in NYC? I've got a short in one of the wires that's driving me crazy.

laurie bought me a new Goldring needle for xmas! I have to go to the local store to learn how to get the old one off, I tried tugging on it and gently working it around but no luck, then I thought "I should really not be pulling too hard on this very expensive and delicate tonearm" and stopped.
