What's up Rufus? Looks like you've been spending a bunch of time checking out your parent's Beatles vinyl collection!

All of my Beatles vinyl sounds like butthole because I bought a bunch of scratched copies off of vinyl and everything skips.

But man I LOVE Paperback Writer.

the first LP that I bought with my allowance was a Parlaphone Sgt Pepper's that even had the cardboard badges - totally lucked out. have everything else on Capitol including the reissues of the UK albums when they put out the first round of CDs.

now you need to get into bootlegs - my faves are the 'Get Back' album with the cover photo from Beatles Blue and the Strawberry Fields Forever boot of psychedelic stuff including the mysterious 'Peace of Mind'.

love Paperback Writer but crush on 'Rain' even more!

i've always been stalking the perfect white album. i've had original early numbered versions. 80's white vinyl. euro editions. direct metal master versions. i think i have two copies at home and one of them is the best i've found so far. sound-wise. doesn't look particularly minty, but it sounds super duper.

what beatles vinyl do you like?

The German Odeon versions, especially the green labels...

Mark G, Thursday, 22 July 2010 21:34 (fourteen years ago) link

when i was a kid i spent a long time searching for a complete Sgt. Pepper album on vinyl (with the cut-out things and so forth). when i found it i was soooo psyched. probably made my parents pay too much $$$ for it.

tylerw, Thursday, 22 July 2010 22:13 (fourteen years ago) link

I found the psychedelic inner sleeve on a chubby checker LP, for £2.

And now I have a complete Sgt.

Mark G, Friday, 23 July 2010 01:33 (fourteen years ago) link

was the instrumental "this boy" from A Hard Days Night ever put on vinyl? not the lame symphonic version on the UA soundtrack, the one with the sweet sax solo that plays when ringo's hanging out w/that punk kid.

Taken to buying old reissue 45s when I can find them cheap and in good shape. An Apple label "I Want to Hold Your Hand" sounded horrible, but a couple of others have been good. Decent way to hear some of the mono mixes.

Had a really nice copy of the mono Beatles VI a few years ago, but some of it sounded funny. Maybe not mastered well. Some of it sounded good.

Found a mono Sgt. Pepper recently at the swap meet that's in a little better shape than the last one I had. Somewhat crackly, but grooves not worn. That's maybe a decent sounding record. Never heard a Parlophone Sgt, Pepper.

And Rufus, I think you're right about Vee-Jay. Non-counterfeit copies of Introducing the Beatles sound good.

hi Rufus!

Question: What is your favorite thing about "Paperback Writer" ??

My favorite thing about "Paperback Writer" is the point when the Beatles sing 'Frere Jacques, Frere Jacques' as the "background vocals" in the last verse

do you dig that? I certainly do!!

the Beatles are amazing

bootlegs can be sooooo anhoying (if the people who bootlegged them sing them their selves)otherwise they are okay who cares if there not origanal i'll tell you one person who does care me.

rufusmagufus, Monday, 26 July 2010 18:33 (fourteen years ago) link

nah, I mean bootlegs of weird unreleased tracks, unused takes and studio shenanigans, like the endless tapes of the 'Let It Be' sessions or different mixes of 'What A Shame, Mary Jane'.

scott seward, Friday, 30 July 2010 01:18 (fourteen years ago) link

Cable guy came round to our house to move a connection, spies my shelves of records and says "You like records, huh? Got any Beatles?" I say "Uh, yeah a few" and begin listing the LPs I have, when he proudly &* defiantly interrupts me "I have everything The Beatles ever recorded!" I am flabbergasted, this dude must be a serious collector & have serious cash. I say " Really? On vinyl???" And he replies "No, on mp3." A little part of me died...

Bill E, Friday, 30 July 2010 01:52 (fourteen years ago) link

yep, stereo & mono boxes + the anthologies will set you back about 2GBs.

Chewawa Allstar (herb albert), Friday, 30 July 2010 02:23 (fourteen years ago) link

Admittedly, this was before the reissues came out - I should have been more impressed. You have the Butcher's sleeve as a jpg???? ;-)

scored rufus an authentic early mono vee jay introducing the beatles for 25 cents today. he was siked. plays vg. not bad. cover is in great shape. got him a good copy of mind games too. what are fathers for?

aw

"Not in a great place" meaning mentally? or Oregon? (Matt P), Saturday, 4 September 2010 19:15 (fourteen years ago) link

As long as the title and the band name are both above the hole, that's an authentic VeeJay.

Mark G, Saturday, 4 September 2010 21:50 (fourteen years ago) link

does Rufus enjoy "Mr. Moonlight"? that is my main concern. we need more "Mr. Moonlight" fans to counteract all the bloodless heathens who deride "Mr. Moonlight" on the ILM board

Stormy Davis, Saturday, 4 September 2010 22:01 (fourteen years ago) link

Well, i do.

rufus was on the computer here at the store earlier and he staggered out of the office and said: "i just looked at every u.k. beatles pressing ever made."

thought he was gonna fall down.

I will always love the fact that Vee-Jay was based in Gary, Indiana.

no one else would give the Beatles a shot in America, but Gary, Indiana would

to be specific, his copy is a mono Version II:

why do you think michael jackson loved the beatles so much. gary indiana love.

scott seward, Saturday, 4 September 2010 22:44 (fourteen years ago) link

don't think i've ever actually seen a real stereo copy of the vee jay album. keep your eye out for them.

scott seward, Saturday, 4 September 2010 22:46 (fourteen years ago) link

that is a great point re: MJ and the Beatles. the guy grew up in Gary -- home of the Beatles first US label -- and later bought their whole catalog .. certainly a intersting factoid that should be emphasized in the MJ hisotry

Stormy Davis, Saturday, 4 September 2010 23:18 (fourteen years ago) link

if you've ever been to Gary ... well, you know what an armpit it is. hopeless city. But when Indiana went to Obama in 2008, holy crap was that insane. Never in my life could I have imagined Indiana going Blue. Citizens of Gary ... we luv u
