scott seward, Sunday, 25 July 2010 15:19 (fourteen years ago) link

American Primitive Vol. II: Pre-War Revenants (1897-1939)

I was sleep so I was lost (herb albert), Sunday, 25 July 2010 19:40 (fourteen years ago) link

i got stuck in a neil young youtube k-hole yesterday. love that rockin' in the free world live with bruce springsteen, REM was onstage too, but luckily they didn't sing or anything.

scott seward, Sunday, 25 July 2010 20:43 (fourteen years ago) link

I used to love REM back when Stipe was Mr Mumbles Mysterioso but heard Losing My Religion on the radio the other day and, man, does he sound like an out'o'tune goat.

I was sleep so I was lost (herb albert), Sunday, 25 July 2010 21:41 (fourteen years ago) link

yeah i dug them pretty much until the end of the world as we know it album. liked everything before that a bunch. loved their john cougar album at the time a lot. the one with superman on it. i wish they had just made a couple more like that.

scott seward, Sunday, 25 July 2010 23:08 (fourteen years ago) link

begin the begin was probably their last great song.

scott seward, Sunday, 25 July 2010 23:10 (fourteen years ago) link

herb, can you explain death in june to me? are they just ridiculous goth dudes or are they boyd rice-style douchebaggers?

not everything is a campfire (ian), Monday, 26 July 2010 19:31 (fourteen years ago) link

why can't they be both?

scott seward, Monday, 26 July 2010 19:34 (fourteen years ago) link

i haven't listened to that much death in june, but some of their neo-folk stuff makes the nu-freak folk people look pretty shabby. same with current 93. they were all over shirley collins when espers was in short pants.

scott seward, Monday, 26 July 2010 19:40 (fourteen years ago) link

speaking of martial celtic tribal neo-folk, now playing:

scott seward, Monday, 26 July 2010 19:40 (fourteen years ago) link

oh but its a record. damn herb you got me all confused now.

scott seward, Monday, 26 July 2010 19:41 (fourteen years ago) link

xpost DiJ are ridic goth dudes w/ some douchey boyd-rice teutonic tendencies and friends w/ NWW and C93. kinda like a doomy Legendary Pink Dots.

I was sleep so I was lost (herb albert), Monday, 26 July 2010 19:57 (fourteen years ago) link

and it's all good, just wanted a place for us vinylovers to chill and talk about cool stuff that's not LPs

Hey, Michaelangelo is on Pitchfork today:

http://pitchfork.com/forkcast/14664-sorcerers-delight/

One of his best songs! I really like Michaelangelo. That second album they mention was actually eight songs from around the same time as his s/t album and then some later recordings. Came out on Void around ten years ago.

V/A comp of music that inspired Peter Gabriel's "Us." Peter Hammill, William Orbit, Eno, and lots of African drummers. I acquired TONS of similar comps in the 90s; they're seldom strong from beginning to end, so I've been pulling them out to remember what's what, and maybe make my own comp of the best stuff.

Aural Opiates A mostly dated (and monotonous) house/techno mix. I've hung onto this since '93 for Mombassa's "Cry Freedom" and Massive Attack's "Hymn of the Big Wheel."

Going Global Series: Voila I like the remix of Khaled's "Kebou" on this, the rest is more standard-issue techno.

Things coming up on shuffle:

* Song from the Afterglow album that Sundazed put out in the '90s. Always loved this album.
* "Mr. and Mrs." - really good song on the Incredible String Band's Changing Horses album.
