It seems like, more than before I'm hearing a lot of scratchiness on my records (though it may just be me noticing it more). This seems to even happen with new records, and I have no idea what the problem is. I got New styli thinking that would help, but it doesn't seem to have done a thing. Today it seemed particulalry bad, is there any way to alleviate the problem, because this drives me up the wall and makes me never want to listen to records again.

Okay, I just tried 4 records I've played a few times before, and there's some serious distortion noises that I don't even remember being there yesterday. On both turntables too. I've tried adjusting the counterweight,I've tried adjusting the anti-skate, I've tried using my old styli, what the hell is it? I don't think the records could have just gotten worse overnight.

It seems to be a lot worse on the left channel too.
I can't emphasize how irritating this is, I'm getting to be afraid of actually putting on records because the scratchiness bothers me too much.

nvm just read that you got a new one
I've had other weird issues about distortion coming from the left channel too. I think I'm going to take my needles in to the store and ask about them.

sounds like an amplifier problem to me. have you tried playing cds/tapes/radio through the same system?

yeah I would try that as well

I have, and there wasn't a problem (my set up consists of two turntables and a laptop/CD player hooked up through the same mixer. I got the same problem on both turntables, but not the laptop/cd player. I have also gotten new speakers and cables in the last year).
I took my needles into a store today, and they seemed okay. The guy deduced that it was probably the tonearms, which never occurred to me, but does actually make sense (there's other weird problems with the counterweights and the like). I'm hoping when I take my turntable(s) in to them, they can fix or replace the tonearms.
Thanks for the suggestions, though.

hmmm
does your amp have a dedicated phono input? those have built in preamps (separate from the rest of the amp) and I still think that might be the issue here. although if you've had counterweight problems that might be it as well.
do you have a piece of paper with the proper tracking angle so you can adjust your cartridge? very useful.

I was thinking it may be a phono input issue. My cartridge is aligned straight, but the problem seems to exist even in the middle of records when the needle and grooves are parallel.
I'm really hoping this will just be the tonearms so I can fix them and have this done with, though it's probably not going to be cheap :(
