What Should I Bring To The Local Record Show?

i'm thinking a little bit of everything. that way anyone who hasn't been to the store might be curious about it if i they see that i have a little of this and a little of that. bob fay sez clean classic rock and thats a no-brainer cuz thats what i sell all day anyway. so, yeah, a smattering. some avant stuff, some good jazzy/funky stuff, got a little bit of oddball world-y stuff. maybe some vintage country... but ian won't be coming, so maybe not...

and 45s. i should have a good box of 45s. i'm only gonna bring like 8 boxes. i don't want to kill myself. i've hauled enough records this week. 6 houses visited and about 1500 lps, 45s, and 78s bought this week alone.

gonna price stuff to sell too. none of this jacking things up 30 bucks more than they should be. i'll have some nice pieces though. what should i put on a nice clean copy of spiritual unity on esp? not a first pressing. black and white cover. still nice though. i've got a reissue that i'm fine with so i don't really need to keep it.

scott seward, Wednesday, 1 December 2010 23:56 (fourteen years ago) link

hey scott when are you gonna need an employee? ;)

not everything is a campfire (ian), Wednesday, 1 December 2010 23:56 (fourteen years ago) link

Doez the spiritual unity have the grid on back or is it earlier ?

not everything is a campfire (ian), Wednesday, 1 December 2010 23:57 (fourteen years ago) link

i'm not as into ESP discographical details as I used to be. i dunno, $40?

not everything is a campfire (ian), Wednesday, 1 December 2010 23:57 (fourteen years ago) link

bring punk and indie rock records so young attendees won't think your store is just for old farts.

not everything is a campfire (ian), Wednesday, 1 December 2010 23:58 (fourteen years ago) link

i'm gonna bring some smiths and REM. it is at UMASS after all.

scott seward, Wednesday, 1 December 2010 23:59 (fourteen years ago) link

my copy has a big Y on the back. the early ones are different colors and silkcreened. i think.

scott seward, Thursday, 2 December 2010 00:00 (fourteen years ago) link

this similar one went for a hundred this year and the cover is in bad shape. i dunno, maybe 60 bucks is a good price. its not like they grow on trees.

scott seward, Thursday, 2 December 2010 00:05 (fourteen years ago) link

ian you should come up for the show. get the weekend off. do you know anyone with a car? it's not THAT far. four hours?

scott seward, Thursday, 2 December 2010 00:11 (fourteen years ago) link

great show too. lots of good stuff. at sub-fmu prices.

scott seward, Thursday, 2 December 2010 00:11 (fourteen years ago) link

if you said you were coming i would totally load up a box of ian-bait.

scott seward, Thursday, 2 December 2010 00:12 (fourteen years ago) link

i wish i could! i just took a few days off to go to RI for thanksgiving, and i don't really know anyone with a car :(

not everything is a campfire (ian), Thursday, 2 December 2010 00:59 (fourteen years ago) link

scott, would you want to drive down here to pick up like 6-8 boxes of classical records we're giving away?

not everything is a campfire (ian), Thursday, 2 December 2010 01:06 (fourteen years ago) link

um...

scott seward, Thursday, 2 December 2010 01:29 (fourteen years ago) link

this is a bad weekend for me but next time you do it lemme know. i could take as many ilv'ers as fit. well, plus mrs thus sang freud.

Thus Sang Freud, Thursday, 2 December 2010 01:59 (fourteen years ago) link

bring some latin? i dunno, i always hear guys say "do you have any latin"? maybe it's a ny thing tho. bring john fahey records.

Thus Sang Freud, Thursday, 2 December 2010 02:01 (fourteen years ago) link

I have a table at our local show in 2 months. I'm gonna mark this stuff down some more but I would appreciate any feedback. Still haven't gone through the 10" records, hip hop, or classic rock stuff.

hay sleeve will you trade me that 6 organs/charalambides split for an adn krystall box set? ;) more serious feedback coming later but looks good overall. kurt vile lp maybe a bit high, bombino & TJSA a bit low?

not everything is a campfire (ian), Thursday, 2 December 2010 03:41 (fourteen years ago) link

i just don't know if ppl care about kurt vile as much anymore since that record got repressed/his fanbase changed from nerds to college kids? i'd gladly sell someone my copy for $20.

not everything is a campfire (ian), Thursday, 2 December 2010 03:43 (fourteen years ago) link

good point, I think that price predates the repress

and yeah I am open to trades!

sleeve, Thursday, 2 December 2010 03:55 (fourteen years ago) link

those prices are right on. thumbs up.

scott seward, Thursday, 2 December 2010 05:22 (fourteen years ago) link

that's a great list of records. i think maybe the Camberwell Now records are priced too low, and maybe the Negativland and Mirror, too--although i guess it depends on who shows up at the sale. i love that Kallabris 12", never see that anywhere.

nerve_pylon, Thursday, 2 December 2010 05:25 (fourteen years ago) link

feel free to add a couple bucks in some cases though. jobriath, new york dolls. hell, in most cases you could add 2 or 3 bucks and still be very reasonable.

scott seward, Thursday, 2 December 2010 05:28 (fourteen years ago) link

"Thomas Jefferson Slave Apartments - Bait And Switch LP $5"

good for instance here. if there is someone looking for this they would totally pay ten bucks. and ten would be a good price! you know? i dunno. overall, the prices are fine. but no reason to sell good stuff short.

scott seward, Thursday, 2 December 2010 05:35 (fourteen years ago) link

thanks everybody!

I'm still pulling out some other things but this gives me confidence that my pricing skills are fairly accurate.

thing about the Camberwell Now recs is that they are those bad pressings on Ink, not the Recommended ones. I'll bump Mirror and Negativland and TJSA a bit.

Kallabris are great, yeah.

INTO A GROOVE
Vinyl record enthusiasts search for treasures at the annual show

By Winston Ross

The Register-Guard

Published: Monday, Jan 31, 2011 06:00AM

EUGENE — Amelia Hart has been attending the Eugene Record Convention as long as she can remember, usually with a set list of certain long-playing records she’s hunting. This time, Hart’s only parameter was a $200 budget, Christmas money she’s hoarded for a month for this very occasion.

“It’s more fun this way,” Hart said, clutching a copy of David Bowie’s “Diamond Dogs” at the outset of her search at the Hilton Eugene on Sunday. “You might find something you didn’t know you wanted.”

Hart buys vinyl because she grew up with it, but also because it’s “tactile” and because it’s a different listening experience.

“You have to pay more attention, when you have to keep getting up and changing it,” she said.

The convention, adorned with signs such as “Yes — We do have 1980s Japanese pop,” was packed Sunday with people who wholeheartedly agree. The 1,000-plus attendance makes 2011 “a good year,” said organizer Bill Finneran. Eugene’s convention is the largest in the Northwest, he said, and vinyl is making a comeback nationwide, driven largely by a renewed interest in the higher-quality format among younger listeners ages 20 to 35.

Now that so much music is purchased and played in highly compressed digital forms, it’s a “shock” for some to listen to a favorite album on vinyl, Finneran said. After a decadelong push by record companies to move consumers to compact discs by only releasing albums in that format, “almost all major releases now come on vinyl,” Finneran said.

But it was the even older stuff dominating Sunday’s event, where 45s and 78s numbered at least 100,000.

Probably the most expensive record in the center was a Beatles album, “Yesterday and Today,” with a price tag of $2,000 and a heck of a back story.

The record is a “third state butcher cover,” which means that when it was purchased there was an entirely different picture of the Beatles on the cover, said Jeff Freelander, owner of record dealer Vinylcology. The Beatles’ John Lennon was upset at Capitol Records for some unknown reason, so he set up a cover shoot that depicted the band members posing amid baby doll parts and hunks of butchered meat.

When the record label’s executives saw it — after thousands of copies had already hit the shelves — the album was immediately pulled, with a more innocuous picture of the Beatles sitting on an old storage trunk glued to the outside.

Whoever bought Freelander’s copy must have spotted Ringo’s black V-neck T-shirt barely visible through the “trunk cover” and steamed it off, to reveal the “butcher cover” beneath. Freelander found it at a garage sale for 25 cents. It “books” for $2,400.

“You can still see the glue on it,” Freelander said. “But it’s almost in perfect condition.”

There are believed to be 10 copies of the record in existence that never got the trunk cover. They’re worth $1 million apiece, Freelander said.

By Sunday afternoon, nobody had plunked down the money for his copy, but Freelander did plenty of other business, each transaction a conversation starter.

“You know what the problem with this album is?” Freelander said, holding up a copy of Sinead O’Connor’s “I Am Stretched On Your Grave” as he rang up a customer sale. “She’s got too much hair.”

A couple of rows over, Shawn Mediaclast thumbed through a batch of dance music as if his fingers were on fire, from Spacedust to Little Louie to Kaskade, from eclectic house music to old-school favorites, including House of Pain’s 1992 hit single “Jump Around.”

Mediaclast, a DJ and owner at the downtown dance club Cowfish, picked this table because he trusts Ken Van Etten’s taste in music, he said.

Van Etten said he’s trying to lighten his load this year because he’s planning to move, and he’s looking to sell most of his record collection. That’ll be hard to do, but Van Etten figures it will be good for him.

“It’s all about letting go,” he said.

Went to a record fair for the first time in a decade, at least!

Not much has changed, still a lot of 'boutique' Beatles Box sets selling for a small fortune. This time they are 4LPs as opposed to 10CD sets...

Found some great stuff at the NY one I worked at this past... November? Was fun. I helped Todd (books shows for Maxwells in Hoboken and Bell House in Brooklyn), he has lots of rare surf and r&b, the kind of table where people drop hundreds on very beat up old 45s. Him and his wife loved my observation of all of the "desperate haircuts" sported by a large percentage of attendants.

listening to Bernard Lubat and his Mad Ducks right now. one for the NWW list trainspotters. the one with the crazy circular collage cover up there. so amazing.

i got a lot of stuff from one guy. my brother knows him. teaches at vassar. he was gonna sell at the wfmu show that didn't happen. just unbelievable stuff. all immaculate condition. mind-blowing french prog. just, like, unplayed. he had a wide range. amazing 80's stuff too. really coveted some of his factory/cherry red stuff. his prices were reasonable too. got great stuff from my friend andy too. all in trade/credit. he always has great stuff. sealed mandrill records. jazz. i got lots of rap 12 inches from him. maybe i should post those. they deserve some love.
