Rubber Room's one of the all-time creepiest tracks

That was the only one I knew going in, frankly amazed there were THAT many similar (from a mainstream country artist.) Some of the lyrics are like the EC Comics of country, lots of twisted revenge tales.

Post-punk for me today. Halfway through this, it's great.

anti-vinyl statement coming up: listening to some popol vuh CDs i have and to be honest i actually prefer having them on cd. i've had super-clean german pressings of popol vuh records before and any surface noise kinda drives me up a wall. and they always seem to have some pop/crackle thing going on no matter how clean they look. i actually want to start building a modest krautrock cd collection. i've got next to nothing. and some of that stuff is soooooooooooooooooooooooooo quiet and original vinyl isn't cheap so to find great copies at afordable prices could take you forever.

anyway, playing:

best of popol vuh from the films of werner herzog

tantric songs/hosianna mantra 2fer

sing, for song drives away the wolves

scott seward, Monday, 21 February 2011 17:20 (thirteen years ago) link

always had that problem with cluster vinyl on sky. get a copy that looked unplayed and still bad surface noise. someone on ilm told me this was a problem with sky vinyl in general. so, i always end up selling the stuff. but would love to have it all on cd. never had a problem with can or amon duul vinyl. don't think i have any faust vinyl.

scott seward, Monday, 21 February 2011 17:22 (thirteen years ago) link

i have original american press of the first neu album and that sounds great. have a reissue of the second album. that sounds great. vertigo and german kraftwerk sounds great. american kraftwerk pressings can be not so great.

scott seward, Monday, 21 February 2011 17:23 (thirteen years ago) link

the only popol vuh record i have with irritating surface noise is a reissue of Hosianna Mantra.. all the rest sound fine. Some of 'em are 90s reissues though.

not everything is a campfire (ian), Monday, 21 February 2011 19:18 (thirteen years ago) link

90's reissues are probably the way to go!

scott seward, Monday, 21 February 2011 19:30 (thirteen years ago) link

i have an italian(?) copy of In Den Garten which sounds okay iirc.

Something maybe about this Minnesota winter that will seemingly never stop snowing, but bleak-ish, mopey post-punk is sounding really good to me lately.

Not sure if it works out of context or w/e. Wallers is sort of an acquired taste.

Trip Maker, Wednesday, 2 March 2011 05:56 (thirteen years ago) link

that wasn't that crazy. i mean, the this mortal spiral cover of gene clark was a bit more weird to me.

jaxon, Wednesday, 2 March 2011 06:57 (thirteen years ago) link

The cover of Wheels isn't crazy, yeah. It is the second to last track on an album of more experimental home recordings and half-formed ideas.
It's familiarity is refreshing after something like "Piano Lesson," which sounds like a piano lesson, complete with damning criticism.
But it doesn't exactly sound inspired. I dunno, I enjoy B. R. Wallers but he confounds me.

Trip Maker, Wednesday, 2 March 2011 14:27 (thirteen years ago) link

Trip Maker, Thursday, 3 March 2011 16:42 (thirteen years ago) link

didn't Fusetron just list a new Phoenix issue of the Shinki Chen ? why yes, i think they did...

Artist: CHEN, SHINKI
Title: Shinki Chen & Friends
Format: LP
Label: Phoenix
Country: USA
Price: $23.00

"Gatefold LP version. Shinki Chen was one of the leading figures of the Japanese psychedelic rock scene in the early 70s, seen as a Jimi Hendrix-type figure in Japan at the time. This record, released in 1971 was some of his last recorded material (he also recorded with the band Powerhouse and Foodbrain) in addition to the different band line-up known as Speed, Glue & Shinki and their debut Eve released the same year. While the bands style is often compared to its Krautrock cousins, it lacks the dreamy directionlessness that a lot of them have as well as the bore factor of the lighter-weight progressive rock acts. Shinki Chen & Friends might lack Joey Smiths amphetamine-fuelled drumming, but it is generally bluesier with lots of strange keyboard effects, fuzzy bass lines and a relatively weeping guitar sound. Digitally remastered on 180 gram vinyl." - Phoenix
