I want the 13th Floor Elevators unreleased sixth single

i had a dream about record store day last night where they were trying to charge me $400 for the big star 3rd "test pressing". i would probably buy that if i saw it. also maybe the television live at the old waldorf LP. i doubt i'm going to find either of those!
― tylerw, Tuesday, 12 April 2011 15:59 (thirteen years ago) link
I will let you know if we get a bunch of them. I set aside some extra stuff last year and mailed it to some folks on ilx.

I also would like Big Star - Third and Mississippi John Hurt - The Immortal (remastered). Can't wait for the mail on Friday at the store!

that's the only one I want, although I guess the Elevators 7" would be cool too.
so yeah, put me on whatever list you're compiling for the Big Star please!

Ha! I am just mentally taking note in case we have leftovers of stuff ya'll are wanting.
I get so geeked out about RSD every year - it really is my favorite holiday. Hot Dogs, exclusives, live music outside. We make a big ol' event outta this.

yeah, big star 3rd and lower dens "deer knives" single. i kinda want that velvets "foggy notion" single but i'm sure it's going to be $11 or something crazy.

i hate record store day. busiest, most nightmarishly chaotic day of the year for us.
that said, i am mostly interested in the International Submarine Band MONO reissue with bonus 7"I wanted the Sandy Denny 7" but maybe it's UK only? I couldn't find anywhere to order it from.
I didn't even KNOW about the Elevators single...

i've never been to a record store day store on record store day. i lived on an island. and now i am stuck at my own dumb store all day. i don't think there are any record store day records that i need. but i would have to see the list again. maybe i'll go up to brattleboro to check out what the stores there have before i open up for the day.
― scott seward, Tuesday, 12 April 2011 17:20 (thirteen years ago) link
i kinda wish all the used record stores would get together and have a *We Will Not Sell On Ebay For A Month Month*. and put out all the stuff they would have sold online in their stores for reasonable prices. that would be cool.

I have somehow mananged to never get Rumours on vinyl so I'm treating myself to a copy of that big honkin' reissue (45 RPM! mastered by Steve Hoffman! etc!). not really interested in anything other than that; I'll be heading to Amoeba to pick up Tomboy (hoping for clear vinyl) and the new Feelies though.
― the pussy/butthole addendum (jamescobo), Tuesday, 12 April 2011 17:24 (thirteen years ago) link
it feels a little sad to admit this, but i just don't care that much about new vinyl. i don't think i've ever bought a "reissue" 45 in my life. last week i was in a store and they had a ton of those big star alternate take 45s or whatever they are and i LOVE big star and i didn't buy one. i dig numero group and stuff like that, but they are usually so expensive that i don't spring for them. most of the ones i have i got in trade. and as far as new releases go i don't really care if they are on cd or vinyl. probably listen to them more if they are on cd. i hardly ever hold on to new vinyl that i buy. i feel like it doesn't mean as much now or something. like, a band or artist could put their stuff out on vinyl or tape or cd and it doesn't really matter in the end. i tried to get excited about nu-siltbreeze and i dug that stuff and i like tom's tastes, but i never play whatever i still have. i'm sure there are a ton of cool small labels putting out stuff i would dig, but i'm just so into old stuff that i can hardly ever justify buying one new fancy record for 20 bucks when i could ten (or even 20!) old records for the same money. but i am a high volume shopper...
i definitely think its cool that other younger people are into the new vinyl thing though! they should be. and they should be supporting other cool young people. last "new" release i bought that i LOVED was that last clockcleaner album. babylon rules. and that was years ago! i mean i loved it as an "album" on "vinyl" and i still play it and will never get rid of it. but, again, its just my own cheapness. despite the fact that i spend a lot of money on records. a lot of new stuff i take a chance on just doesn't hold up for me in the long run. i do own a vetiver album that i like. and an espers album. man, not much else. love, oldmanshakingfistatnewrecords
― scott seward, Tuesday, 12 April 2011 18:30 (thirteen years ago) link
for new music, i kinda just prefer seeing live music every once in a while. it hits the spot. and i still get new stuff for my column. and the occasional metal promo. i guess thats enough for me. just thinking about this cuz on here and on ilm people are always talking about new stuff that i will probably never hear. and i wonder if i should feel guilty that i'm not hearing it all, but then i remember that i've hosted, like, 50 live shows in my store in the last 2 years and i don't feel so guilty!

ten new(-ish) records & affordable reissues that i like a lot:
metal mtns - golden trees (this is members of tower recordings and is very dreamy space-folk with lots of nice guitars.)
call back the giants s/t (this is Tim from The Shadow Ring, if you like them you'll love it imo.)
vernon wray - wasted (affordable reissue, licensed from wray's family, great country-folk-rock record with heavy vibes.)
gary higgins red hash reissue was great though i dunno how long ago that was and if it qualifies as 'new' for the purposes of this thread. there IS a thread on ILM where skot says he would buy a nice reissue of it!
d. charles speer & the helix - after hours (my favorite local cosmic country group; always try to go see 'em play.)
steve gunn - boerum palace and/or sundowner (two records of nice fingerpickin folk with some fuzz leads, sometimes accompanied, sometimes instrumental. good records imo.)
stupid party - s/t LP (freedom school records; SST-style sludge stoner punk!! always liked to describe them as mudhoney playing early (early early) meat puppets)
the dead c are still putting out great records. shrug. maybe not everyone needs a new dead c record, but i sure do.
zachary cale - walking papers LP (another local songwriter, more folk than country but a great drinkin' time bar band also.)
but new 7"s and 45s? sheesh, nah. half the time they cost more than $5! for two songs! yer kiddin me.)

and these are all records i don't see myself getting rid of down the line, unlike plenty of other records i buy but see as more disposable. like i like the new kurt vile record but i don't think it's gonna turn into a long-term fave or anything.

there is a saint etienne 7" boxset that is coming out for RSD but i'm sure all of those mentalist fans will snatch it up before i do and i'm not even sure it's available in the U.S.

― omar little, Tuesday, 12 April 2011 19:21 (thirteen years ago) link
other good recentish reissues:
- Robert Lester Folsom, "Music and Dreams" (gloriously laid-back private-press Cali folk which languished in obscurity until Mexican Summer put it out again last year. I think I've put Show Me To The Window on every mix CD I've made since hearing it. also how about that cover art.)
- Pastor T.L. Barrett and the Youth for Christ Choir, "Like A Ship Without A Sail" (AMAZING gospel record reissued by Light in the Attic complete with excellent packaging. I wish more music sounded like this.)
- Terry Riley, "The Lisbon Concert" (there's a CD version out there but IMO long meandering pieces like this benefit from being split up across multiple sides, although with a piece of music this pretty I inevitably end up listening to it straight through. beats Keith Jarrett's Koln Concert [which I also love] to a bloody pulp.)
and if we're counting all the vinyl reissues of Emeralds tapes over the last year, all of those too. expensive as fuck but totally worth it. the Imaginary Softwoods album is a particular treat; I use it to counteract my assface neighbor (dude is both a rep for Monster Cables and loves Jimmy Buffet) across the street whenever he feels compelled to crank Ten Summoner's Tales at a hellish volume (sadly, this happens a lot).
― the pussy/butthole addendum (jamescobo), Tuesday, 12 April 2011 19:22 (thirteen years ago) link
yah i love red hash. i got that reissue. i already loved that record though.
and again i love plenty of new music. just don't listen to new stuff as much i guess. i love all the promo stuff i get from utech and type. utech my fave u.s. label easily. all on cd though except for the new locrian album. which keith utech was SUPER nice enough to send me for free.
but i guess my point was that new stuff doesn't seem as permanent with me in most cases. maybe i'm past my prime. would never sell my numero vinyl though. cuz its so pretty. stupid sumblime frequencies practically forces me to sell their vinyl when it reaches 80+ on ebay. i mean if i really like it i can tape it or buy the cd.

I am totally into it. It is our favorite day of the year at the store. This year we are roasting an entire pig and have five bands playing outside.
― Kelsey Glamour (Nijoli), Monday, 5 March 2012 17:17 (twelve years ago) link
I can imagine it being much more fun for people who work at record shops, and I'm sure it does bump up their income, which is only a good thing. But I'm a big grump and tend to treat it like New Year for drinkers - it's the time of the year when the amateurs come out and clog everything up for those of us who take our drinking/record buying seriously all year round. Most of the instores I've heard about are bands I don't really like, either, so that takes away probably the only aspect that could be aimed at me.
― emil.y, Monday, 5 March 2012 17:22 (twelve years ago) link
(Local instores, obviously. I'm sure there are others across the country/world that are great.)
For us, it is less amateurs and more like our regular customers all in our store all at once (which never happens). We have hundreds of folks that love vinyl in our store and we drink and eat and laugh and listen to great music. We do have a few people lined up in the morning that just come in, buy and get out which is fine, too.
But that is us. It is different everywhere, for sure.
― Kelsey Glamour (Nijoli), Monday, 5 March 2012 17:35 (twelve years ago) link
for us it's ridiculously busy. just ringing people up all day and explaining that you do not have any more copies of the [insert here] 7" or LP or whatever.
