AND JAPANESE PSYCH :(

one dis leads to another (ian), Wednesday, 20 July 2011 17:30 (thirteen years ago)

heady minimalism today, but couldve gone w raga rock, drone, kosmiche, krautrock, basement psych, or west coast psych on another day.

69, Wednesday, 20 July 2011 17:37 (thirteen years ago)

i don't like much psych. but i love Hawkwind and Heldon. what are they?

nerve_pylon, Wednesday, 20 July 2011 17:41 (thirteen years ago)

heldon is psych-prog, hawkwind is populist-psych, and you DEFINITELY like heady minimalism with yer terry riley records!

69, Wednesday, 20 July 2011 17:43 (thirteen years ago)

lol populist-psych. true re: Riley, but i would never call him 'psych'.

nerve_pylon, Wednesday, 20 July 2011 17:45 (thirteen years ago)

i think hawkwind are heavy psych?

one dis leads to another (ian), Wednesday, 20 July 2011 17:58 (thirteen years ago)

bikepsych

69, Wednesday, 20 July 2011 18:02 (thirteen years ago)

Gotta be heavy, I guess.
I remember a guy at the college radio station trying to turn me on to some MOR indie shit and he was like "it's got some nice psychedelic flourishes" and I'm like "I like that shit drenched in acid, dude."

Trip Maker, Wednesday, 20 July 2011 18:04 (thirteen years ago)

Garage, tho. I mean, that's really where it all started for me. One of the first cd's my dad bought was a comp called "Highs of the Sixties."
The Seeds, Electric Prunes, Standells, Knickerbockers, Love...it was basically Nuggets.

Parlour Psych!

Or is that just subsumed into Freakbeat?

(Is there a difference between Psychedelic Krautrock and Kosmische? Where is the line? Just curious.)

Aphex Twin … in my vagina? (Karen D. Tregaskin), Wednesday, 20 July 2011 19:31 (thirteen years ago)

this is a hard decision

obliquity of the ecliptic (rrrobyn), Wednesday, 20 July 2011 19:33 (thirteen years ago)

so much good psych

obliquity of the ecliptic (rrrobyn), Wednesday, 20 July 2011 19:33 (thirteen years ago)

i think psychedelic krautrock is distinguished from kosmische through more structured pieces & also more rhythm? kosmische tending to be closer to ambient music.

i'd put parlour psych under popsike but that's just me

one dis leads to another (ian), Wednesday, 20 July 2011 19:38 (thirteen years ago)

OK, that makes sense, thanks for the disambiguation.

i say if it's all electronic, it's kosmiche. otherwise, it's PK.

69, Wednesday, 20 July 2011 19:40 (thirteen years ago)

That said...

I LOVE ACID.
ACID.
ACID.

(guess that doesn't count? I always set the gates of psychedelia far too wide open so almost anything can get it.)

Aphex Twin … in my vagina? (Karen D. Tregaskin), Wednesday, 20 July 2011 19:42 (thirteen years ago)

i voted kosmiche

jaxon, Wednesday, 20 July 2011 20:02 (thirteen years ago)

voted 77 BOADRUM while mixing tussin and Sparks while sunburnt in Dumbo

it's a meme i made and i like (Steve Shasta), Wednesday, 20 July 2011 20:06 (thirteen years ago)

I just opened up THEE PSYCHE VAULTES of my MP3 collection to try to decide and man, if Anatolian Invasion was one of the choices, I'd go with that, but then Wimple Winch came on and I gotta go with Freakbeat coz it is my original and still best love.

Aphex Twin … in my vagina? (Karen D. Tregaskin), Wednesday, 20 July 2011 20:09 (thirteen years ago)

Wimple Winch <3

Operation Pooting (Colonel Poo), Wednesday, 20 July 2011 20:54 (thirteen years ago)

it's gotta be west coast psych.

tylerw, Wednesday, 20 July 2011 20:59 (thirteen years ago)

The word "space" doesn't appear anywhere. I must complain!

Stockhausen's Ekranoplan Quartet (Elvis Telecom), Wednesday, 20 July 2011 21:02 (thirteen years ago)

Yes, I will also problematise the lack of Space in this list.

Aphex Twin … in my vagina? (Karen D. Tregaskin), Wednesday, 20 July 2011 21:05 (thirteen years ago)

(Like this poll isn't hard enough without Spacerock on it, there's at least half a dozen options I could happily go for here.)

Aphex Twin … in my vagina? (Karen D. Tregaskin), Wednesday, 20 July 2011 21:07 (thirteen years ago)

love all that psychedelic, though I guess my absolute fave is punk junk psych noise - Chrome, Flipper, Butthole Surfers, Boredoms, Acid Mothers, Bardo Pond, Live Skull, TG, CroMagnon - izzat Heavy Psych?

shoegaze/madchester/baggy becoming a close 2nd

Quantum of Pie (NickB), Thursday, 21 July 2011 16:46 (thirteen years ago)

Third World Eye Psych?

Quantum of Pie (NickB), Thursday, 21 July 2011 16:47 (thirteen years ago)

I'd say Garage Psych, moving towards Rural Psych for later albums?

Aphex Twin … in my vagina? (Karen D. Tregaskin), Thursday, 21 July 2011 16:54 (thirteen years ago)

Cosmic Jug

Quantum of Pie (NickB), Thursday, 21 July 2011 16:56 (thirteen years ago)

for purposes of this poll i'd put elevators in the garage category, even tho they transcend that narrow description and imo created one of the undouted top 5 psychedelic albums of the era.

one dis leads to another (ian), Thursday, 21 July 2011 17:27 (thirteen years ago)

Which one? Easter Everywhere? Shit is so fucking next level. I recently described that album in hyperbolic terms to a fellow dj (psychedelic soundtrack to storming the gates of heaven or some shit) and he just didn't seem to believe me. WTF is wrong with people?!

Trip Maker, Thursday, 21 July 2011 17:38 (thirteen years ago)

Oh yah and you forgot Christian Psych! Listening to Anonymous "Inside the Shadow" right now.

Trip Maker, Thursday, 21 July 2011 17:41 (thirteen years ago)

i'd like to hear some Hopeless Psych.

nerve_pylon, Thursday, 21 July 2011 17:45 (thirteen years ago)

Mark G, Friday, 22 July 2011 09:13 (thirteen years ago)

Two of the best singles ever (I own one of them)

Mark G, Friday, 22 July 2011 09:13 (thirteen years ago)

Freakbeat obv

Operation Pooting (Colonel Poo), Friday, 22 July 2011 09:15 (thirteen years ago)

Would that cover the Blossom Toes' "Ever so clean" album? I was massively disappointed in that one.

Mark G, Friday, 22 July 2011 09:41 (thirteen years ago)

have to vote heavy cause of the heavy hitters.
I also put the minimal/ambient/kosmisch in a separate bucket... main sorting playlist categories for the uncategorizable lately:
new shamble, new shimmer, new aggro

Snop Snitchin, Saturday, 23 July 2011 00:56 (thirteen years ago)

new aggro = nu-pigfuck?!

Burning Hell Sunflower Blues Band (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Monday, 25 July 2011 04:17 (thirteen years ago)

Wait, Mark G, did you actually vote for Freakbeat then? Or is that lone vote mine? Because I've been having this weird thing where it keeps telling me I've already voted in a poll and can't vote again - the *first* time I go to vote?

Aphex Twin … in my vagina? (Karen D. Tregaskin), Monday, 25 July 2011 09:39 (thirteen years ago)

I missed this poll!

am intrigued by the Ayahuasca/Peyote Rituals etc. option - do you have any recommendations in this vein, ian?

Woah never noticed Harry Smith's name on it before, though.
My old co-host wouldn't let me play it on the air lol

one of the crown jewels of my collection:

Wasson's recording of Maria Sabina mushroom chants
not really 'psych' but soothing and an amazing document.
