NOW:
George Gerdes - Son of Obituary

and, since i have been missing ILV, here is a list of things i have been listening to lately, taken from the stack in front of the stereo:
Mike Nesmith - and the hits just keep on coming
rex holman - here in the land of victory
roy hall & his blue ridge entertainers 1935-1938
o.v. wright - 8 men, 4 women
david owens - sunshine go lightly (tax scam label rural rock)
jakob olausson - morning & sunrise
fahey - dance of death & other
homegas
jerry jeff walker - five years gone
joao gilberto s/t
incredible string band - 5000 spirits
skip spence - oar
derroll adams - feelin' fine
the perth county conspiracy - does not exist
basho - falconer's arm pr 1
popol vuh - bruder des schattens
v/a - a collection of mountain blues
richard & linda thompson - i want to see the bright lights
mighty baby s/t
merry aibrakes
bert jansch - it don't both me
henske & yester - farewell aldeberan
hackamore brick - one kiss leads to another
fairport convention - what we did..
emerson's old-time custard suckin band
hurley - hi-fi snock uptown
blaze foley - clay pigeons
stan hubbs - crystal
terry allen - smokin the dummy
clarence reid - running water

one dis leads to another (ian), Tuesday, 3 January 2012 17:19 (thirteen years ago)

george is my man. you need both his records. they are all-time for me.

scott seward, Tuesday, 3 January 2012 17:28 (thirteen years ago)

ooh i should write up the stuff i've gotten via my store. i don't usually do that. usually only post stuff that i went out and got. but i've gotten some cool stuff in the last month here.

scott seward, Tuesday, 3 January 2012 17:30 (thirteen years ago)

Need that new Olausson!

Trip Maker, Tuesday, 3 January 2012 17:48 (thirteen years ago)

olausson is great, gerdes is great. i like son of.. better than the first obituary record. first one was more horn rock iirc? sold it long ago..

now jamming: ken shepherd & the kenfolk... private label (good karma) '77 rural rock with some psych and heavy rock touches. good! maybe this is the year i start ripping semi-unknown rekkerds to my blog.

one dis leads to another (ian), Tuesday, 3 January 2012 18:09 (thirteen years ago)

okay, some recent stuff that has come my way via the front door of my store:

roland kirk - left & right (atlantic)

rahsaan roland kirk - prepare thyself to deal with a miracle (atlantic)

bobby hutcherson - san fancisco (UA)

hal blaine - psychedelic percussion (dunhill)

naked angels soundtrack (straight) (minty promo. man, sounds sooooooooooo amazing. jeff simmons. still want his solo album on straight.)

lee michaels - space & first takes (A&M) (despite the fact that i've see lee michaels albums everywhere for the last zillion years i've NEVER seen this album. weird. and its REALLY good. spacy guitar jams featuring my lord and saviour drake levin. might be the only lee michaels album i even really need. though i am kind of a drake completist and he played on more than one lee album. none of which are as good as this one.)

mort shuman - my death (reprise)

the corporation - s/t (capitol)

mephistopheles - in frustration i hear singing (reprise)

buzz clifford - see your way clear (dot) (another one i'd never seen before. really like it too.)

sugarloaf/jerry corbetta - i got a song (brut) (this is hot. hip hop people know it. fat drums. brut aftershave was on a roll with this album and the first michael franks album.)

earth & stone - kool roots (cha cha) (double lp version with the dub lp included)

the comsat angels - enz (polydor) (dutch-only comp of early singles. i never really listened to these guys, but i dig it enough to keep it.)

bold - s/t (abc) (nice sike stuff. hard to find.)

dunn and mccashen - mobius (capitol) (i've never heard of or seen this album either and i like it a lot. a whole lot. its great. really punchy arrangements, spacey moments, twee brit-pop moments. late 60's. so good. i looked on ebay and two copies had gone unsold for under ten bucks. someone should reissue it.)

sonny rollins - now's the time! (rca)

karen beth - harvest (decca) (2nd album. this copy is a little warped, but plays fine. i just wanted to hear it so i bought it off of a weird dude who came in one day. i really like her first folky album and this is her country-rock thang and i don't dig it as much, but maybe it will grow on me.)

slim gaillard - rides again (dot) (highly recommended)

the eclectic mouse - s/t (capitol) (bizarre late-60's concept/suite/fusion/whatever album made by a dude who became a big name percussionist. kinda...not great...but i feel like i should hold on to it and listen some more. it's a weird one to be sure. and one of those head-scratching "they gave this guy a full orchestra and band and studio time to make...this?" kinda records.)

thelonious monk - work! (prestige) (clean original pressing.)

ron steele - chicago guitar (ovation)

little richard - the rill thing (reprise) (white label promo. "the rill thing" is such a jam. 10 minutes of awesome.)

this is stuff i bought as part of a collection, and i kept certain things, but most i had to sell to make money. but this collection was definitely an interesting education in 90's underground stuff. psych and drone and idm i had never heard. a lot of it ended up in the store and on discogs. still a bunch of 45s and other stuff from it in the store. belonged to a lurking ilxor too! a great guy who it was a pleasure to hang out with. anyway, things hang around and i play them and then i end up keeping more. these are the latest i'm taking home:

spiral sky - s/t (acme) (this is wonderful. only album they made? this is my kinda nu-psych.)

ultra - spray/death/ultra (dom)

the anaksimandros - life is a skullbow (veglia/vauva) (i have no idea what this is, but i like it. and i like singing the title to the tune of "life is a highway".)

frau hansen am bass - brigitte & the hansen experience (dom elchklang) (love this. couldn't sell it. h.n.a.s.-related.)

psycho's mum - a sibilant sin (woronzow) (this is a fun record. i'm not an expert at all on the bevis frond universe. i don't own any bevis frond records. the other records i kept that were frond-related were three by Flyte Reaction. I really like those a bunch. but the flyte reaction stuff doesn't really remind me of the frond.)

scott seward, Tuesday, 3 January 2012 18:23 (thirteen years ago)

8 men, 4 women is such a good record, any OV Wright is ace. I've had that Lee Michaels now for at least a year but I still haven't listened to it.
I've been playing this record a lot along with The Hot Dogs 'Say What You Mean' Are there other Terry Manning produced records out there I need?

JacobSanders, Wednesday, 4 January 2012 17:52 (thirteen years ago)

A few years ago I decided to leave most of my records at my Mom's house since I was traveling and when I came back after being away a year and a few months, three-fourths of my records were stuck together with mildew and were warped. It's humid in Texas and my Mom opens the house then turns on the AC then opens the house and so on. Anyway I threw away boxes of records in a mournful fit of rage and then just stopped sorting them. Now I'm going through them again and it seems everything kept in plastic sleeves are ok but all the rest are wreaked. here are a few I'm going to keep. Sadly I can't remember which ones I threw away and what I have and don't.

i just bought a dehumidifier! i hope it arrives this week.

69, Wednesday, 4 January 2012 21:02 (thirteen years ago)

I bought a collection of Afrobeat and highlife records and for some reason none of them were in plastic sleeves. A few are so stuck together that I can't pull them apart. Only a few are savable. Oh well, live and learn
