that Ming Pep-Steppers record is pretty tough to find. One in slightly lesser condition sold for a comparable amt in 2008. But since so many 78s are sold at private auctions and on private auction websites, it's tuff to get a handle on. to me, that price is somewhat appropriate, but still much too much money to spend on ~5 minutes of music.

haha I thought this was going to be an Albini thread, before I opened it I was mentally calculating what price I would convince me to unload Action Park

someone's got deep pockets for a record with a few 'blasted' grooves & an internal crack.

one dis leads to another (ian), Monday, 7 May 2012 02:38 (thirteen years ago)

How do you ship shellac 78s so they won't break? I can barely lift these things out of their sleeves without them cracking

Lee593 (Lee626), Monday, 7 May 2012 22:15 (thirteen years ago)

put in paper sleeve, sandiich between 2 or 4 pieces of cardboard (10"), tape together. fill larger box halfway with packing material (peanuts or newspaper or bubble wrap) then place 78 sandwich into packing material, cover with more packing material.

soooo apparently some junk store in pittsgburgh turned up a handful of paramounts? including this patton? the others are 'less interesting' like blind blake, papa charlie jackson etc but dang, in the year 2012, whattaya know.

one dis leads to another (ian), Monday, 23 July 2012 15:20 (twelve years ago)

Must have been a little giddy when they found that. Blind Blake is p good too obv!

mod night at the oasis (NickB), Monday, 23 July 2012 15:32 (twelve years ago)

yeah, i mean, he's great! those are all great records i'd say. it's just wild that they still pop up. you'd think some geezer would have gotten em 40 years ago.

one dis leads to another (ian), Monday, 23 July 2012 16:04 (twelve years ago)

i was wondering how expensive Albini material could have got.
But I guess this might reflect people cleaning out rooms that haven't been accessed in years? though 70+ is quite massively long isn't it?
Not sure how fragile shellac is, its survival while neglected for that length of time is pretty phenomenal .
Just hope nobody goes near it with vinyl cleaning spray cos the surface wipes off as i found out with Yma Sumac material from my grandad in my early teens

Stevolende, Monday, 23 July 2012 16:52 (twelve years ago)

yeah, alcohol is a huge no-go for shellac.
the stuff can stand up to time pretty well. it can get moldy & damaged in the wrong temp/humidity conditions, but left in a closet where it's not going to have anything dropped on it, it'll last pretty long (obviously, since ppl collect these things.) very fragile though, very fragile.

one dis leads to another (ian), Monday, 23 July 2012 17:04 (twelve years ago)

I didn't know shellac was made from bug secretions!
