i just dont know ANYTHING about 45s is the truth. that and disco/dance/techno 12"s are like the next frontiers for me...

i don't have a huge 45 collection. but i definitely have 45s that i have kept for years and never sold, so those must be my faves. i keep more since i opened the store. sold that death single though :( still kinda regret that. that sounded so cool.

i don't actually own a copy of "cool" but that song belongs on any list in any format.

I wish I had more 45s but digging for them has never been as rewarding as digging for lps. I rarely find clean 45s and usually give up when ever there are big boxes of 45's. Yet the more I acquire the more I find myself digging for them. Wish northern soul never happened so we still had soul 45s to find.

there are actually lots of cool 45s to be found in stores at great prices BECAUSE so many younger people don't go for them. prices have gone down a lot on stuff that used to be worth money. plus, online sales and craigslist and etc, etc, has created an actual glut of 45s. people selling boxes of them all over the place. you can't give away a lot of cool motown and cameo singles and 50's and early 60's vocal/pop and other stuff that old crabby guys used to buy for actual money. they're dollar singles now. so, in a way, its a great time to start collecting them.

that's encouraging to hear, the music I would actually love to start collecting would be 50's and 60's music, R&B, rockabilly, blues, etc. I think Texas is a difficult place looking for 45's. I know at least 6 guys in Austin who collect 45s and at least 4 in Houston, and most of these guys are hardcore, driving across the state, hitting estate sales, basically what I do in other states. Austin in the last few ten years seems like it has become home of serious record collectors/sellers. Still the great thing about Texas is it is Huge, and I go places most people would fear.

there are tons and tons of off-condition soul 45s in new york. you just trip over the damn things. a lot of them still sound good, too. i'd say like 40% of my 45s kinda look like shit.

Is it easier to find rockabilly on 78s than 45s? Are rockabilly or rockin' C&W 78s expensive?

I want to start collecting 78's like this, but I have no idea where to start, or if this sort of music was released on 45, but I have the feeling it wasn't?

I'm not that picky on condition with older 45s because they're MONO. Surface noise is a bigger issue across the stereo field imo. Obviously, one thing that comes up with 45s is they were in a jukebox and they have heavy groove wear (from lots of play and heavy tone arms). There was one record I bought a year or two ago that was just unplayable, but it hasn't happened that much.

i'm making mixes in preparation for Heemannfest in june. that's what got me thinking about 45s. i want tapes i can play all day long in between live music. that way i don't have to worry about what's playing or worry about changing records or CDs. here's the 45 mix tape i made yesterday. jacob, those early king country 78s are not particularly collectible--a lot of 78 collectors are pretty snobby about what they like and the $$$$ stuff is largely pre-war, though obviously stuff on Sun or w/e can get pricey.

Ian - It is a misprint, or maybe the band changed their name. The band is actually called Plato and the Philosophers.
They were a garage band from Moberly, MO. Fairyland was a mid-Missouri label.
Plato had a song ("CM I love you") that was a regional hit in Michigan, I think?

wasn't there a Back from the Grave-style compilation of Missouri garage rock that came out in the '90s? I remember playing it at KCOU but can't remember the name of the comp.

it wouldn't surprise me. there are tons and tons of regional comps of that nature--was it a volume of "high in the mid-60s" or something?

I've got three small boxes of them, maybe 150-200 in total. A few that are probably a little rare: the Cramps' "Drug Train," the Germs' "Forming," Sid Vicious's "C'mon Everybody," Husker Du's "Statues," Half Japanese's "Calling All Girls" (nine songs!), some early Black Flag and Angry Samoans. If I had to save one from a fire, I'd probably grab "Drug Train."

When I was a kid I would buy cutout 45s, five in a plastic bag so you could only see the outer two. I ended up with everything from Buddah records bubblegum to jazz (I had Ella Fitzgerald doing “Mack The Knife” live in Berlin.)

I loved the crap out of this one. It had a Part A and Part B to fit the whole 7+ minutes on one 45. Me being "progressive" when I was about 11.

i'm selling some 45s for a guy i know and that was one of them. i definitely want it. i was just gonna put everything of his online but then i play stuff and fall in love...

he had all these wlp 60's 45s and i was just gonna make up a price off of the top of my head and buy them but i had no idea what some of them were worth. so, since i like the guy, i told him i would put them up on ebay and we're gonna split the proceeds. fun stuff to go through. cool soul and garage 45s. teen pop. stuff i never see.
