This was bound to happen, what do you guys think? I think this book is beautiful! Real People records, lounge and bar bands, Christian weirdos, elvis impersonators, psych leftovers, and on and on.

JacobSanders, Thursday, 4 July 2013 21:26 (eleven years ago)

Ooh, that looks good. Is there much discussion of the records is it more just the covers?

emil.y, Thursday, 4 July 2013 21:32 (eleven years ago)

There's 48 essay's about people like Tim Adams, The Rhodes Kids, Don Thompson, The Reflections, The shaggs, Marc Mundy, 33 1/2, Luie Luie, Michael Farneti, Jerry Solomon, Dane Sturgeon, and Alexander Longrifle and more. And my copy came with a clear 45, a poster, and a download code.

JacobSanders, Thursday, 4 July 2013 21:37 (eleven years ago)

There's an interview with Paul Major and excepts from his catalogs!!!!!

JacobSanders, Thursday, 4 July 2013 21:38 (eleven years ago)

Whoa, nice!

emil.y, Thursday, 4 July 2013 21:42 (eleven years ago)

kinda like a Waxidermy owners manual

nerve_pylon, Thursday, 4 July 2013 23:10 (eleven years ago)

lol.
i think this book is kinda cool but toooooo expensive.
i think there's gonna be a book compiling all of paul's old catalogs -- he's a great writer, i think. pretty psyched for that.

i guess i'd just rather listen to canned heat? (ian), Friday, 5 July 2013 00:21 (eleven years ago)

65 dollars isn't too much for a nice art book, which essentially this is?

JacobSanders, Friday, 5 July 2013 00:48 (eleven years ago)

i guess i don't mean expensive for what it is, i just mean beyond my means right now.

i guess i'd just rather listen to canned heat? (ian), Friday, 5 July 2013 02:38 (eleven years ago)

I'll buy you a copy if you'd really want one!

JacobSanders, Friday, 5 July 2013 02:59 (eleven years ago)

hahah, jacob, you don't have to do that!!!

i guess i'd just rather listen to canned heat? (ian), Friday, 5 July 2013 03:30 (eleven years ago)

i could PROBABLY get a free copy cuz a friend of mine does a lot of work for J0h4n Kugelb3rg.

i guess i'd just rather listen to canned heat? (ian), Friday, 5 July 2013 03:30 (eleven years ago)

Ian do you have or have seen Alexander Longrifle's Spirits? I need that record.

JacobSanders, Friday, 5 July 2013 03:54 (eleven years ago)

i don't know anything about it!

i guess i'd just rather listen to canned heat? (ian), Friday, 5 July 2013 06:16 (eleven years ago)

oh man i think i need this

Magna Sharta (jjjusten), Friday, 5 July 2013 15:18 (eleven years ago)

this book is fun to look at. not sure i need to own it though. 65 is not an unreasonable price for what it is, what is unreasonable is the 30+ dollar list price 2LP companion comp.

the comp is on spotify fwiw. it's good!

dmr, Sunday, 18 August 2013 18:10 (eleven years ago)

The compilation is good, I want that Ray Harlowe and Gyp Fox record.

JacobSanders, Sunday, 18 August 2013 21:54 (eleven years ago)

probably didn't ~need~ to own it (as per upthread) but this is a really cool and interesting book. seems like it would be best leafing through it with other interesting&nice ppl in the house of an evening

the Dennis The Fox track on the comp is incredible altho I get the impression it's better known than most of the rest of it?

transmisogyny express (DJ Mencap), Friday, 23 August 2013 18:41 (eleven years ago)

I have only own 33 1/3 and Michael Farneti and both of those are solid lounge records with odd touches. I'd like to own most of the records on the comp but most of them are $100+.

JacobSanders, Friday, 23 August 2013 19:06 (eleven years ago)

oh weird, from you saying that I now realize only disc 1 is on spotify, I didn't even know it was two CDs. out of the stuff on disc 1 I've only ever heard Gary Wilson but on disc 2 there's a couple I have .... Dennis the Fox was on that Country Funk comp that came out last year on Light in the Attic, and I have a bootleg of Circuit Rider (awesome album).

dmr, Friday, 23 August 2013 19:55 (eleven years ago)

I didn't realize there was a boot of Circuit Rider!!

JacobSanders, Friday, 23 August 2013 22:43 (eleven years ago)

where have you been??? the circuit rider boot has been through like, two or three pressings by now.. one of the numero group dudes did it.

i guess i'd just rather listen to canned heat? (ian), Friday, 23 August 2013 23:47 (eleven years ago)

I've never kept up with reissues, I know I should. But I want to magically find originals. I only own one, the Spirit of the Golden Juice reissue.

JacobSanders, Friday, 23 August 2013 23:56 (eleven years ago)

a good one to own!

So these guys have a Houston rap book out soon. When I was in high school me and my buddy used to sneak off to Houston to go to DJ screw's shack to buy mix tapes and weed.

JacobSanders, Wednesday, 9 October 2013 18:22 (eleven years ago)

cooooooooooooooooooooool

69, Wednesday, 9 October 2013 18:33 (eleven years ago)

Is there more info on the Houston book anywhere? That sounds awesome.

I have picked the Enjoy the Experience book up in the record store a few times and drooled over it but I can't afford it. Didn't Gregg Turkington write a few of the essays?
One of these days I'll pick it up!

I've been listening to the Michael Farneti record on Spotify all morning. So good.

polyphonic, Tuesday, 26 November 2013 20:15 (eleven years ago)

Oh man I love Good Morning Kisses!! Finding it at a flea market in Tennessee was one of the most exciting moments ever. He's why I became obsessed with lounge records, though there's nothing like him that I've found so far.

JacobSanders, Thursday, 5 December 2013 18:19 (eleven years ago)

This is really cool. "In the Jungle" is my favorite track so far.

seven years pass...

So I've been slowly writing reviews of private press lounge records and writing a historical background of the various circuits many of these groups played. I'm hoping to put together a book eventually similar to Ken Scott's The Archivist or Patrick Lundborg's The Acid Archives but for lounge. I have over a thousand lounge records but I still need at least a few hundred more to make the book definitive, possibly even more if I include a UK lounge section. I started this project last year and have really enjoyed writing again, especially between the hours of 4am to 6am while listening to records on headphones. I doubt if this book will have an audience at large but I love these records and want to build a guide for people interested.

JacobSanders, Wednesday, 8 December 2021 00:23 (three years ago)

Is lounge music interchangeable with "the cabaret circuit" for yr purposes? Read a lot about that in an Eartha Kitt biography and was struck by how this category seems not to have survived, perhaps because it was more about spaces than recordings.

Daniel_Rf, Wednesday, 8 December 2021 10:47 (three years ago)

If the cabaret circuit didn't produce any lounge records, I'm sure it was an influence. I'm glad you brought up that book, I've been meaning to read it! So far the main circuits I'm researching are the bands who played at the Poconos, the Fort. Lauderdale scene, cruise ship bands, Atlantic City, South Texas, the Ozarks, the Catskills and Ohio had a thriving bar band/lounge scene. Then there's the long list of one off performers who self financed their record and played at various bars and clubs across the states that have since closed.

Yeah, that "just to say goodbye" is a heartbreaker, and what happened with it doubly so.
