Record Buying Blunders

The 45 of "Do You Believe in Magic" that I bought is too worn. Sounds terrible. I wanted to hear the mono mix. It was a dollar.

About a week ago, I bought a 12" single at the thrift store because it was from Italy and had an Italian name on it and I thought it said it was from 1981. Thought it was maybe an instrumental Italo record. Looked it up on discogs when I got home, and it turned out that it says 1991 and not 1981. It's a techno record. (I don't hate techno but I goofed.)

This happens all the time when you buy every record with a stock photo from the 60's and 70's. Like this, 'A Reason To Sing' a compilation by the Mexia State School Sunshine Group, which was a school for the mentally handicapped. Thought for sure there would be something interesting but it's odd, a very uncomfortable listen at times.

I have found great weirdo folk or lounge/jazz records with stock covers, but mostly it's religious garbage.

few months back bought an organ funk/exotica record (on the phase4 label) at the enthusiastic recommendation from a friend. was too caught up to remember to check condition... about half the tracks have nasty scratches :(

i guess i'd just rather listen to canned heat? (ian), Thursday, 29 August 2013 00:32 (eleven years ago) link

i devoted a thread to that micronauts thing. not a blunder at all!

Most of the RSD stuff that I did want nobody else did, so I paid day of prices and now I come across stores trying to get rid of the very same for much cheaper. Oops.

I'm sure some people are incredulous that you can find italo at a thrift, but if you shop in cities where there are a lot of clubs, you might find that stuff. Sometimes someone will dump a load of 12" and you just take the whole pile home, always some gems to be had.

I don't know how many times I thought I found a precious item from childhood - like that Gary Lewis and the Playboys record I found and you get it home and it's a shit re-recording -- or worse, IT'S THE WRONG RECORD ENTIRELY!
