Blondefro is such a wimp -- he looked like he was going to cry when his girlfriend wanted him to do the challenge where he had to go into the tomb.

Leon Czolgosz (Nicole), Thursday, 5 August 2004 17:57 (twenty years ago) link

I could understand wanting to throw up, but I really didn't understand Nicole's reaction. She was reacting like she'd eaten strychnine.

Another classic moment: Charla spitting half-chewed chocolates all over the tray in the chocolate factory, making an already disgusting task that extra bit more revolting.

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 5 August 2004 17:59 (twenty years ago) link

(I guess the moral of the story is: DON'T EAT A FUCKLOAD OF CAVIAR BECAUSE YOU WILL DIE)

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 5 August 2004 18:00 (twenty years ago) link

I wanna try that caviar, just to gauge the likelihood of me getting through two pounds. (Is that a portion that the restaurant would actually serve, or would it be a challenging amount even to your average Russian caviar fan?)

morris pavilion (samjeff), Thursday, 5 August 2004 18:03 (twenty years ago) link

The caviar thing is like when you challenge one of your buddies to eat a boxful of Krispy Kremes in 20 minutes and he passes out when he's done.

I liked how after the caviar challenge when the Twins came in, the one who didn't eat was all, "WHOO HOO!" jumping up and down, but the one who ate was all, "ugh."

Jimmy Carter, History's Greatest Monster (Leee), Thursday, 5 August 2004 19:37 (twenty years ago) link

Anyway, I think they're cute, not likeable.

Jimmy Carter, History's Greatest Monster (Leee), Thursday, 5 August 2004 19:38 (twenty years ago) link

It was funny how, in the procession of teams reaching the finish line, whichever of the two didn't eat the caviar was beaming and clapping, while their partner looked ashen and unhappy.

My most-hated team is those two asshats from Brooklyn. "This place if full of dumb foreigners!," etc.

morris pavilion (samjeff), Thursday, 5 August 2004 19:46 (twenty years ago) link

They've had better dumbo twins. That one Brooklyn dude really does look hobbled.

I don't know if i've already said this, but The Amazing Race has consistantly good casting. They are excellent at finding entertaining squabbling couples and "types" that are highly entertaining.

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 5 August 2004 20:37 (twenty years ago) link

Watched this for this first time in a few weeks last night. What a great show.

na (Nick A.), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 16:56 (twenty years ago) link

I think that this season is the worst casting so far, but it's still a great show.
I love (as in love to hate) the two young couples. Esp. the self-described "intense guy". What a cock.

Huck, Wednesday, 11 August 2004 16:59 (twenty years ago) link

Last nite was a good one. Amazing Race history was made!

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 16:59 (twenty years ago) link

It was really speedy last nite too. I mean, most of the episodes are speedy, but they were really moving.

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 17:01 (twenty years ago) link

Despite the brothers being cocks, I did feel bad for the one with the knee problems. It was amusing watching everyone else running around like freaks and then them crawling along patiently. I really want Mirna and Charla to lose sometime soon.
"MIIIIIRRRNNNNAAAA!"
"CCHHAAAAARRRRLLAA!"

na (Nick A.), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 17:02 (twenty years ago) link

Are you kidding???? I want Mirna and Charla to win because I want to see all the other teams cry!

(Although I wouldn't mind if Chip and Kim won.)

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 17:04 (twenty years ago) link

I liked this snippet over on Television Without Pity:

"Even goats don't like Mirna, and they eat cans."

Leon Czolgosz (Nicole), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 17:06 (twenty years ago) link

Is "scarab" such an unknown word? I was surprised so many of them didn't know what it was. I loved the guy looking for a sword - he probably confused it with "scabbard".

Maria D. (Maria D.), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 17:08 (twenty years ago) link

Chip & Kim and the bible models are the only vaguely likeable teams. However, they are unfortunately also dimbulbs.

YES. NO ONE KNEW WHAT A SCARAB WAS WTF!!!

na (Nick A.), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 17:08 (twenty years ago) link

I'm rooting for Chip & Kim, but they lack that ruthlessness that might come in handy when things get more desperate. Not that it wasn't nice to see them help other teams in Egypt, but...

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 17:09 (twenty years ago) link

Was last night the first time Kim spoke?

Huck, Wednesday, 11 August 2004 17:11 (twenty years ago) link

I was shocked by that too! It's not like scarabs are completely obscure or something -- even if they'd only seen The Mummy they should have known what it was.

x-post

TWOP is my enemy.

Mr. Tony Plow (Leee), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 19:04 (twenty years ago) link

Spousal/significant other-al abuse has never been more entertaining.

Mr. Tony Plow (Leee), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 19:05 (twenty years ago) link

dammit, I missed last night. I didn't think that creepy Bizarro Doug Sahm-looking dude and his g/f were gonna come out w/ a commanding seven-hour lead, WTF

Morley Timmons (Donna Brown), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 20:11 (twenty years ago) link

They still came in first, but they aren't as far ahead now, like maybe an hour ahead or less.

na (Nick A.), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 20:12 (twenty years ago) link

phew

Morley Timmons (Donna Brown), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 20:15 (twenty years ago) link

I love the great equalizers on AR that wipe out leads, like flight times and opening times. I wanted to see that couple have to climb down into a tomb at midnight - I thought some mummies might be walking around in there - but noooo they had to wait til morning.

I couldn't help but laugh and cringe at schmirna saying "this is fun for me!" running down into the tombs. Maybe she's really a troll, not a little person.

Maria D. (Maria D.), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 20:47 (twenty years ago) link

She was recalling happier times down in the mines of Moria.

Leon Czolgosz (Nicole), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 21:10 (twenty years ago) link

HAUL ASS!

Sarah McLusky (coco), Friday, 13 August 2004 19:39 (twenty years ago) link

Riddle me this: how are the villains in TAR constructed? Are they of the Hatchian variety, who use deft and machiavellian manipulation and assorted smoke & mirrors to gain advantage, or is it more of a garden variety back-stabby motion combined with general jerkhole-isms who, by chance or by dance, end up in or near the lead?

Mr. Tony Plow (Leee), Friday, 13 August 2004 20:11 (twenty years ago) link

The latter. But most of the time the teams aren't truly fucked by other teams, but just by their own poor skills or bad luck. Most of the between-team conflict is just bitchiness.

na (Nick A.), Friday, 13 August 2004 20:24 (twenty years ago) link

Godspeed, Charla and Mirna. We shall never forget you. :(

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 02:06 (twenty years ago) link

No, but really. They helped make the show this year. The first sequence in the airport tonight was priceless!

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 02:07 (twenty years ago) link

OK, I gave in after reading the updates on The Practical Nomad I'm hooked again and am currently Torrenting the files.

Elvis Telecom (Chris Barrus), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 06:05 (twenty years ago) link

COLIN GOT SERVED - a nasty ostrich egg, that is.
Despite the fact that Colin & Christie still came in second, it was awesome to see happy-go-lucky Chip (the self-proclaimed "Michael Jordan of eating") breeze his way through the egg-eating to beat miserable, obnoxious, vomit-spewing Colin. What a cock that guy is.
Riddle me this: why did Mirna/Charla and the Bowling Moms STAY in the Gulf Air office after buying their tickets that would have gotten them there faster? Wouldn't this have clued the other teams into what their plan was?

eat fudge banana swirl (Nick A.), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 13:38 (twenty years ago) link

I think they were still in the process of booking the tickets when the other teams spotted them, but I could be wrong.

Leon Czolgosz (Nicole), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 13:55 (twenty years ago) link

"Look, it's a symbol of God's Promise!"

Huck, Wednesday, 18 August 2004 13:57 (twenty years ago) link

I was wondering how long Chip and his wife would stay and eat watermelon at the chair place after delivering the chairs. Yeah, yeah, Mother Africa and all but you're in a race!

nickn (nickn), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 19:41 (twenty years ago) link

They're still in the lead, though! It was kind of nice to see a couple of racers who looked like they were having the time of their life and genuinely appreciated all of the places they are seeing along the way.

Leon Czolgosz (Nicole), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 19:51 (twenty years ago) link

And what the fuck was up with Church-Fro boy and the $100 bus ride? Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha! Even Mirna and Charla got on for $3!

Huck, Wednesday, 18 August 2004 19:53 (twenty years ago) link

There was something really creepy about watching americans acting all grossed out about having too much to eat in front of a crowd of african children.

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 20:03 (twenty years ago) link

That did seem in poor taste.

Leon Czolgosz (Nicole), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 20:05 (twenty years ago) link

"Look, a symbol of God's Promise!"

Huck, Wednesday, 18 August 2004 20:07 (twenty years ago) link

Godspeed, Charla and Mirna. We shall never forget you. :(

Nuts, I knew I shouldn't have peeked in here before watching this week's episode.

I'm in mourning!

morris pavilion (samjeff), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 20:16 (twenty years ago) link

it's a shame they came up short

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 20:17 (twenty years ago) link

It even made Phil cry! Though those may have been tears of relief, since Mirna won't be around to grab and molest him anymore.

Leon Czolgosz (Nicole), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 20:18 (twenty years ago) link

i'm gonna miss that crazy wtf?-accent of hers around the world. "vee need to go veddy fast, salut!"

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 20:38 (twenty years ago) link

I think she may have even said Bellissimo again last night.

Leon Czolgosz (Nicole), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 20:42 (twenty years ago) link

They were really my favorite reality show contestants evah.

morris pavilion (samjeff), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 20:53 (twenty years ago) link

I usually try and suspend disbelief when i watch these shows. i don't really want to think too hard about the logistics and editing cuz where's the fun in that? I mean, how DO they get cameramen on all these last-minute flights with 2 seats left? Do they buy up all the seats except for two? But anyway, they REALLY made it look like that bus that ran out of gas was left in the dust and yet they end up ahead of Mirna's bus. Veeeeerrrrryyy tricky.

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 21:10 (twenty years ago) link

Mirna and Charla's bus had a lot more people on it though, so it may have had to make a lot more stops than the one that ran out of gas.
