Well, no, not really; Villa would pull way out left.

Maybe I should have put it as a 4-3-3 with Schweignsteiger, Sneijder, and Xavi in a triangle behind Mueller, Klose, Villa.

Captain Ostensible (Scik Mouthy), Monday, 5 July 2010 08:59 (fourteen years ago) link

yeah that might work, villa has been playing to the left so far

suárez over klose tho

nakhchivan, Monday, 5 July 2010 09:02 (fourteen years ago) link

You reckon? I like Suarez, and as a rule don't really like Klose, but Klose's got the goals (again), and I can't really deny that. On past form I'd have loved to put Torres or Rooney in there, but they've obviously been shocking in the actual tournament.

Captain Ostensible (Scik Mouthy), Monday, 5 July 2010 09:16 (fourteen years ago) link

suárez hasn't nearly the same quality in midfield, and he scored that amazing goal against south korea

nakhchivan, Monday, 5 July 2010 09:19 (fourteen years ago) link

Also the awesome handball and crying one min/celebrations the next. Gotta love a South American 'little thief'.

xyzzzz__, Monday, 5 July 2010 09:26 (fourteen years ago) link

Good points.

Captain Ostensible (Scik Mouthy), Monday, 5 July 2010 09:29 (fourteen years ago) link

Pick for pick I'd go with SM's team, I think. Klose practically on his own up front, Ramos doing everything on the right, Villa left wing, the rest just some kind of beautiful footballing fulcrum of beauty with Sneijder playing in the hole.

,,,,,,eeeeleon (darraghmac), Monday, 5 July 2010 09:30 (fourteen years ago) link

They are great, yeah. xp

xyzzzz__, Monday, 5 July 2010 09:30 (fourteen years ago) link

Sticking with the Dutch.

Michael Jones, Monday, 5 July 2010 09:54 (fourteen years ago) link

Same here.

xyzzzz__, Monday, 5 July 2010 10:28 (fourteen years ago) link

      Skeletenburg
van der Wiel Pique Juan Lahm
Bradley Schweinsteiger
Muller Sniejder
Suarez Villa

Voted Holland btw.

fuque santa cruz (a hoy hoy), Monday, 5 July 2010 10:36 (fourteen years ago) link

Why are y'all picking Pique and not Lucio? He was colossal every time I saw him, even when the others had lost it.

Bradley's a deserved inclusion - will be interested to see where he ends up.

Ismael Klata, Monday, 5 July 2010 10:39 (fourteen years ago) link

have a beard quota.

fuque santa cruz (a hoy hoy), Monday, 5 July 2010 10:40 (fourteen years ago) link

I was wondering why suddenly no mention of Fabregas

Ismael Klata, Monday, 5 July 2010 10:40 (fourteen years ago) link

Germany or Spain - have a funny feeling that the Germans may have peaked too soon. It'd be good to have a first-timer win but Van Persie is too evil a person to be allowed to lift the World Cup and, y'know, it's Holland in South Africa.

Vulvuzela (Matt DC), Monday, 5 July 2010 10:42 (fourteen years ago) link

Home advantage is pretty much the only way a country ever gets over the first-time winner hurdle, and this is probably the closest Holland is ever going to get.

Ismael Klata, Monday, 5 July 2010 10:49 (fourteen years ago) link

Aside from the obvious, why's Van Persie so hateful?

Captain Ostensible (Scik Mouthy), Monday, 5 July 2010 11:03 (fourteen years ago) link

He's not, really. He's just dutch/arrogant tbh. Can't understand that hate myself.

(apart from the obvious, as you say, which AFAIR never actually went anywahere)

,,,,,,eeeeleon (darraghmac), Monday, 5 July 2010 11:21 (fourteen years ago) link

eh i think it happens on a regular enough occasions that we can just assume that rapey footballers are a bit rapey

fuque santa cruz (a hoy hoy), Monday, 5 July 2010 11:59 (fourteen years ago) link

If I didn't believe it I would have to stop singing that one song to the tune of 'Re-rewind' which would suck

ultra nate carson (DJ Mencap), Monday, 5 July 2010 12:06 (fourteen years ago) link

afaik that was established as a false accusation

nakhchivan, Monday, 5 July 2010 12:10 (fourteen years ago) link

Have all the leftbacks in this tournament been so shit that people have had to put a guy who's played every game at rightback in there? I know Lahm has played LB in the past but still. Coentrão's been alright, and Clemente Rodríguez looked decent for Argentina.

The referee was perfect (Chris), Monday, 5 July 2010 12:14 (fourteen years ago) link

fucile has been well fuckin futile

nakhchivan, Monday, 5 July 2010 12:14 (fourteen years ago) link

friend of mine had a debate with me as to whether 'futile' or 'facile' would be a better rendering of his name

so you want Mark Ronson to cry into your ass (acoleuthic), Monday, 5 July 2010 12:19 (fourteen years ago) link

maybe the answer is 'fuckle'

so you want Mark Ronson to cry into your ass (acoleuthic), Monday, 5 July 2010 12:19 (fourteen years ago) link

Eliminees XI, except Ozil who gets in cos nobody else seems to want him.

Ismael Klata, Monday, 5 July 2010 12:38 (fourteen years ago) link

Would pick Park over Bradley, we was great in much the same way but did more going forwards.

Gravel Puzzleworth, Monday, 5 July 2010 12:41 (fourteen years ago) link

Picked Holland at the start for no particular reason so sticking with that. I strongly fancy Spain to beat Germany in the semi for what it's worth.

And the next one's in Brazil, and then the next two get cancelled due to all-out global war. Excellent!

Ismael Klata, Monday, 5 July 2010 14:01 (fourteen years ago) link

Will be so disappointed if it isn't a Deutsch v Dutch final

I am utterly and abjectly pissed off with this little lot (Tom D.), Monday, 5 July 2010 14:26 (fourteen years ago) link

I remember an earlier form of that diagram making the rounds pre-'98 to show that it was England's turn to win.

if, Monday, 5 July 2010 19:08 (fourteen years ago) link

You could also make a reasonable case that England '66 ≈ France '98. It would be pretty great if Uruguay somehow managed to screw up Brazil in 2014 too.

Ismael Klata, Monday, 5 July 2010 19:54 (fourteen years ago) link

Automatic thread bump. This poll's results are now in.

System, Monday, 5 July 2010 23:01 (fourteen years ago) link

I thought germany would run away w/ this

iatee, Monday, 5 July 2010 23:01 (fourteen years ago) link

oh, they will.

,,,,,,eeeeleon (darraghmac), Monday, 5 July 2010 23:16 (fourteen years ago) link

So everyone thinks it will be a Holland Vs Germany final for sure?

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Tuesday, 6 July 2010 15:42 (fourteen years ago) link

Would be funny if it was Uruguay vs Spain.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Tuesday, 6 July 2010 15:42 (fourteen years ago) link

So everyone thinks it will be a Holland Vs Germany final for sure?

What, everyone thinks Germany will beat Spain? Since when?

Oracle Crackers (Tom D.), Tuesday, 6 July 2010 15:46 (fourteen years ago) link

since we decided to revolt against our psychic octopus overlord.

orakle-krake (Gukbe), Tuesday, 6 July 2010 15:47 (fourteen years ago) link

Even the Psychic Octopus is backing Spain!

Oracle Crackers (Tom D.), Tuesday, 6 July 2010 15:47 (fourteen years ago) link

People be madly overrating Holland here. I think Uruguay might do them this evening.

Vulvuzela (Matt DC), Tuesday, 6 July 2010 15:47 (fourteen years ago) link

I think most people misread the question as "Quickfire World Cup Poll #19: front up: who will win the World Cup not?"

StanM, Tuesday, 6 July 2010 15:50 (fourteen years ago) link

People be madly overrating Holland here. I think Uruguay might do them this evening

To expect them to beat Uruguay isn't madly over-rating anything really.

,,,,,,eeeeleon (darraghmac), Tuesday, 6 July 2010 15:51 (fourteen years ago) link

underestimating the spanish too

Michael B, Tuesday, 6 July 2010 15:51 (fourteen years ago) link

Spanish have struggled to really impress themselves, despite their undoubted class. I don't know if they'll particularly trouble Germany.

,,,,,,eeeeleon (darraghmac), Tuesday, 6 July 2010 15:53 (fourteen years ago) link

Start by dropping Torres

Oracle Crackers (Tom D.), Tuesday, 6 July 2010 15:54 (fourteen years ago) link

Don't remember Italy being that impressive either last time round, until suddenly it was like "woah they've won it".

Matt DC, Tuesday, 6 July 2010 15:54 (fourteen years ago) link

Italy were far more impressive than France

Oracle Crackers (Tom D.), Tuesday, 6 July 2010 15:55 (fourteen years ago) link

That's Italy though. Pretty much par for the course there.

,,,,,,eeeeleon (darraghmac), Tuesday, 6 July 2010 15:56 (fourteen years ago) link

Start by dropping Torres

Del Bosque has hinted at exactly that and he has Llorente and Silva available.

Grand amiral de la marine des licornes (Michael White), Tuesday, 6 July 2010 16:00 (fourteen years ago) link

Italy were far more impressive than France

France looked plucky and managed to scrape by but that was about it.

Grand amiral de la marine des licornes (Michael White), Tuesday, 6 July 2010 16:01 (fourteen years ago) link

Llorente would be a real sign that they mean business

,,,,,,eeeeleon (darraghmac), Tuesday, 6 July 2010 16:02 (fourteen years ago) link

Why are they playing a Premiership player anyway, they're crap

Oracle Crackers (Tom D.), Tuesday, 6 July 2010 16:06 (fourteen years ago) link

Best league in the world, worst players at the World Cup. Richard Keys is sobbing under whips chez Murdoch

,,,,,,eeeeleon (darraghmac), Tuesday, 6 July 2010 16:09 (fourteen years ago) link
