Great new interview with Joel/Trace/Josh about the KTMA days.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 20 September 2010 19:24 (fourteen years ago) link

So in a nutshell, I need to mention that I don’t ever recommend people watch the KTMA episodes, unless you feel you must see the “warts and all” beginning of MST as a sort of “live through this” right of passage, Also, I should mention, I find it a bit troubling that people are demanding that these shows be released on DVD: those people remind me of my Dad sitting alone at the kitchen table with a knife and a block of really stinky cheese muttering “it’s an acquired taste”.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 20 September 2010 19:25 (fourteen years ago) link

Also this from Trace:

To question things we were doing and compare it to later shows I guess is inevitable but it’s a little like looking at Baron von Drais’s walking machine and saying, “Dude. Why didn’t you invent pedals and a chain? Or a seat?”

Ned Raggett, Monday, 20 September 2010 19:29 (fourteen years ago) link

provided me with reliable entertainment on saturday evenings back in '91 or so.

also, thankful to them for introducing me to manos, which is so highly entertaining, both original version and mst3k-treated

their version of ninja tv pilot w/lee van cleef sooooo funny

just wish they had gotten around to doing sleepaway camp 3: teenage wasteland

I love that Josh, Trace & Joel actually try to answer the questions as best they can. I mean, that stuff was so long ago...the recall would have to be hazy at best.

It definitely veers into 'Comic Book Guy' territory,..."Ahem. In Episode 6.5.2 you state that the umbrella is open, but as anyone can clearly see from the video, the umbrella clearly is NOT open. Was this a commentary on the nature of perception, or did you sir, in fact mistake us for imbeciles?"

VegemiteGrrrl, Monday, 20 September 2010 20:30 (fourteen years ago) link

Well as mentioned at the start this grew out of a review project of those early broadcasts, which have long circulated via filesharing as well as YouTube -- let's face it, that level of obsession is precisely the point! (Thus Joel being ever thankful for the 'it's just a show' line.)

Ned Raggett, Monday, 20 September 2010 20:32 (fourteen years ago) link

It's definitely coming for a more loving, fact-finding, tell us what you remember point of view..not pompous. but yeah, the level of detail is pretty crazy.

Love reading about the birth of "Tom" Servo as we know him, and the Mads. And that they're so unanamious about, "Um maybe don't watch these unless you really have to?"

VegemiteGrrrl, Monday, 20 September 2010 20:37 (fourteen years ago) link

Watched "The Crawling Eye" last week, not realizing it was the first Comedy Channel episode. Gypsy uncoiled herself - I had no idea.

Jaq, Monday, 20 September 2010 20:38 (fourteen years ago) link

The Crawling Eye has become one of my favorites in its clunky way. "Directed by us!"

I miss this Rhino promo that's at the front of the VHS releases. I never FFW'd through it! It was, I dunno, comforting.

Haha, I remember that. Only saw it a couple of times on other releases since I just used my own tapes for the longest time pre-DVDs/YouTube.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 1 November 2010 16:37 (fourteen years ago) link

oh man totally forgot about that promo. awesome!

I love The Crawling Eye, as I think I muttered above somewhere -- such a weird, stagy cast surrounding the germ of a good idea.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 1 November 2010 16:52 (fourteen years ago) link

FYI: The movie I referenced upthread was "Gamera vs Zigra" from SEASON 0

You been Netflix streaming 'em, Dan? Been catching up on a lot of old ones thanks to that.

Yep! Kind of sad that I can't rewatch Mr B Natural that way

Weird thing about The Crawling Eye is that it was originally a British tv series! We watched The Final Sacrifice this weekend - so AWFUL! Ancient cult of Canadian wrestlers, the Ziox! But a fantastic song from Tom Servo, Crow and Mike about Canada. And the bonus interview with the guy who played Zap Rowsdower was too earnest for words.

Jaq, Monday, 1 November 2010 17:13 (fourteen years ago) link

I made Casuistry watch that when I was visiting him in Toronto. Went over well.

The shorts they've been showing at the live Rifftrax events have been absolutely sublime. This most recent one, last Thursday, had one with a talking paper bag a la "No springs!" that was just amazing.

Just watched The Final Sacrifice, which has the most hilarious riffing I've heard yet. Here's its VHS cover:

Has anyone mentioned how great Hobgoblins is yet? Top notch riffing all the way through, and it has that incredible bit when one the lead characters is unmistakably burnt to death, but then returns during the final scene without so much as a singed eyebrow!

Also, Hired! The Musical.
