Because I am Muslim.

n/a (Nick A.), Wednesday, 31 August 2005 17:49 (eighteen years ago) link

oh right

don't EVER come to denver because we LOVE denver omelettes

Homosexual II (Homosexual II), Wednesday, 31 August 2005 18:03 (eighteen years ago) link

I don't know anything at all about Denver!

Do tourists come there?
Is there skiing?
Do people there have accents? What do they sound like?
Is there any funny local slang I should know about?

n/a (Nick A.), Wednesday, 31 August 2005 18:06 (eighteen years ago) link

Sadly my two favorite diners are now gone. The Whitespot and the Colorado Cafe.

Rotgutt (Rotgutt), Wednesday, 31 August 2005 18:09 (eighteen years ago) link

The Whitespot is gone??
I never went but I almost forgot about it! How sad!

ps I HATE denver omelettes, but green chili ones RULE!

mergaypeters, Wednesday, 31 August 2005 18:12 (eighteen years ago) link

1. Not really. Except maybe some people on their way to ASPEN!
2. There is, not too far away! Not in Denver proper.
3. We don't have accents, as a rule. If you'd like I could leave you a voicemail for verification.
4. Uhh.. none comes to mind! I will think about this one.

Homosexual II (Homosexual II), Wednesday, 31 August 2005 18:13 (eighteen years ago) link

remember when they used to call the white spot THE WET SPOT? HEHEHEHE

Homosexual II (Homosexual II), Wednesday, 31 August 2005 18:17 (eighteen years ago) link

4. Are Rocky Mountain Oysters considered slang or a delicacy?

Where was this "wet spot"? It is a far off memory...almost like a dream!

mergaypeters, Wednesday, 31 August 2005 18:21 (eighteen years ago) link

People say pop when they mean soda, that bugs me.

Rotgutt (Rotgutt), Wednesday, 31 August 2005 18:26 (eighteen years ago) link

The White Spot was at 9th (or maybe 10th) and Broadway.

Rotgutt (Rotgutt), Wednesday, 31 August 2005 18:27 (eighteen years ago) link

Kids made fun of me for saying soda (my parents are from New York) and I had NO IDEA what they were talking about when they said "pop"....so now I don't drink soda hardly ever because it damaged me so much as a kid!

mergaypeters, Wednesday, 31 August 2005 18:32 (eighteen years ago) link

I never hear people say POP anymore and when I hear it it ALARMS ME

Homosexual II (Homosexual II), Wednesday, 31 August 2005 18:36 (eighteen years ago) link

hey mer what exactly is trimmed and burning? your bush?

Homosexual II (Homosexual II), Wednesday, 31 August 2005 18:38 (eighteen years ago) link

muh bush needs neither a trim or a burn!
I think it's a beck song, I'm not sure. I don't remember really. Is it confusing? Maybe I'll put my SERIOUS email address instead...

mergaypeters, Wednesday, 31 August 2005 19:06 (eighteen years ago) link

OK, that's a tough exchange to follow, but slangwise--

A friend of mine from Ft. Collins didn't even call sneakers "sneakers." They were "tennies." Holy shit!

The White Spot is missed-- home of "The drunkest chocolate milkshake ever." At least, for me.

I think Trimmed and Burning is Built to Spill.

Hunter (Hunter), Wednesday, 31 August 2005 19:09 (eighteen years ago) link

my mom calls her sneakers TENNIES

Homosexual II (Homosexual II), Wednesday, 31 August 2005 19:32 (eighteen years ago) link

Homosexual II (Homosexual II), Wednesday, 31 August 2005 19:36 (eighteen years ago) link

Homosexual II (Homosexual II), Wednesday, 31 August 2005 20:21 (eighteen years ago) link

the local vernacular here is bastardized because so many people aren't actually from Denver.

keith m (keithmcl), Wednesday, 31 August 2005 23:53 (eighteen years ago) link

whats denver doing for labor day? BBQING??

Homosexual II (Homosexual II), Thursday, 1 September 2005 17:14 (eighteen years ago) link

Answers to above.

1. Well, I did. And so did another coupla people I know.
2. Don't care.
3. Yeah, the best! For making fun of.
4. Grodey.

Ally C (Ally C), Thursday, 1 September 2005 20:50 (eighteen years ago) link

Any relation to the other White Spot?

donut gon' nut (donut), Thursday, 1 September 2005 20:56 (eighteen years ago) link

I presumed that Homosexual II was passed out in the Dude Dumpster, and that's what they GGS were all were looking at.

My favourite thing in D-Town is Roxy at the Denver Diner.

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Thursday, 1 September 2005 21:07 (eighteen years ago) link

jerry, roxy is at the breakfast king!! she still works there - i havent been there in a DOG'S AGE - i used to live two blocks away from there

Homosexual II (Homosexual II), Thursday, 1 September 2005 21:14 (eighteen years ago) link

Memory fades.

What is the name of that other veggie diner? The one with the breakfast burrito? Next to the vintage clothes shop?

I miss Mexican food. Although not as much as I missed Indian food when I was in the US.

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Thursday, 1 September 2005 21:18 (eighteen years ago) link

the watercourse is the one you're thinking of

Homosexual II (Homosexual II), Thursday, 1 September 2005 21:28 (eighteen years ago) link

next time I go to casa bonita I will somehow capture that delicious CASA BONITA smell, into a BOTTLE or something, so you can be reminded of its deliciousness.

Homosexual II (Homosexual II), Thursday, 1 September 2005 21:30 (eighteen years ago) link

I think the feel of the cave walls is something much more marketable than the smell mandee, try and put THAT in a bottle!

mergaypeters, Thursday, 1 September 2005 21:42 (eighteen years ago) link

I just want to keep the whole restaurant in my pocket (casa). Although maybe not the food, cause it'd get all mushy and gross.

I miss Roxy too!!! What a DOLL.

gunther heartymeal (keckles), Thursday, 1 September 2005 22:32 (eighteen years ago) link

Casa's food is nasty to begin with.

Rotgutt (Rotgutt), Friday, 2 September 2005 01:16 (eighteen years ago) link

All right, important question: Who makes the best burrito in Denver? I like the place on 7th and Santa Fe (I think it's 7th and Santa Fe, right?).

Frank Kogan (Frank Kogan), Friday, 2 September 2005 02:18 (eighteen years ago) link

I haven't been to the place on 7th and Santa Fe! Should I search this place out?

gunther heartymeal (keckles), Friday, 2 September 2005 03:01 (eighteen years ago) link

We had a Casa Bonita here once. They had a toy tightrope-cyclist that would go back and forth above us, a nifty little game room, flags that you could raise whenever you wanted more punch, and the best honey-filled soapillas [sp].

Assuming from the cave talk that Denver's C.B. is much the same.

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Friday, 2 September 2005 03:21 (eighteen years ago) link

TBH I havent had an astounding burrito in denver -- the best burrito i've had was probably in my old hometown of GREELEY, totally fatty lard-fried everything.. mmmmm

Homosexual II (Homosexual II), Friday, 2 September 2005 04:18 (eighteen years ago) link

Burritos all seem the same...but GREEN CHILI!!
Santiago's by far is the best....they have like 7 locations around town, super good, really spicy and cheap!! I'm having a chicken and rice burrito with HOT GREEH CHILI today for lunch, I can't wait.

mergaypeters, Friday, 2 September 2005 15:35 (eighteen years ago) link

7th and Santa Fe is El Noa Noa, right? Its pretty darn good.

Jack and Grill's green chili is excellent, as are their calabasitas, overall though its just OK. I think they were better before they expanded.

Rotgutt (Rotgutt), Friday, 2 September 2005 21:24 (eighteen years ago) link

I will have to try these places! So many places I need to go. The yacht club being one of them.

gunther heartymeal (keckles), Friday, 2 September 2005 23:26 (eighteen years ago) link

you know where i want to go tonight, in denver?

Homosexual II (Homosexual II), Friday, 2 September 2005 23:35 (eighteen years ago) link

You're supposed to be in Lincoln this weekend and not Denver, bitches!

not sure about pickles (Jacqui Pickles), Friday, 2 September 2005 23:45 (eighteen years ago) link

Actually, there are two on the corner of Santa Fe and 7th; the one that I've been to looks like a diner, basically.

But nothing I've had is as good as the burritos at Pancho Villa's, in San Francisco (16th and Valencia).

I love the food at New Saigon on South Federal.

Frank Kogan (Frank Kogan), Saturday, 3 September 2005 03:31 (eighteen years ago) link

For a short while, Da Lat on S. Federal ruled, but I think that their chef or ownership changed. OUr last trip was not so good. If it's even there, still.

When you say "yacht club," do you mean the Valverde Yacht Club? I used to see that joint all the time on the bike commute as it is right next to the bike path. Has anyone here been there?

Hunter (Hunter), Saturday, 3 September 2005 20:39 (eighteen years ago) link

OMG SOPAPILLAS

i'm trying to remember all the mile high colorado songs we used to sing in elementary school, but can't because my head is occupied with tom waits.

i wish they hadn't changed the license plate from this:

http://www.roundamerica.com/images/June/2003-06-05/trip-2003-06-05-CO-Unknown-Colorado-license-plate-200.jpg

Juulia (julesbdules), Saturday, 3 September 2005 21:00 (eighteen years ago) link

I could really use a SOPAPILLA right now! SEVERAL! I never sang mile high colorado songs in elementary school, just songs about strawberries and chesnuts.

gunther heartymeal (keckles), Saturday, 3 September 2005 23:47 (eighteen years ago) link

i found a bit of the elementary school song i remembered thanks to google:

If I had a wagon I would go to Colorado

Go to Colorado (if i had a wagon i would)

If I had a wagon I would go to the state

Where a man can walk a mile high

"If I had a Chevy I would drive to Colorado

Drive to Colorado (if i had a chevy i would)

If I had a Chevy I would drive to the state

Where a man can walk a mile high."

um, it's a kinda boring song, but it stuck in my memory from whatever reason.

i probably haven't had a sopapilla since i moved away when i was 8...

Juulia (julesbdules), Sunday, 4 September 2005 00:36 (eighteen years ago) link

well, I like the part about WAGONS. Like you can ONLY get to colorado by WAGON!! I really wish this was true!!!

gunther heartymeal (keckles), Sunday, 4 September 2005 07:29 (eighteen years ago) link

there aren't many chevy's in denver, mostly subaru outbacks.
