I'm surprised there isn't more of that actually.

Interestingly, the Malkins and Ed Morrisseys of the world are talking it up -- because they kinda have to. (It's especially interesting watching Malkin have to try and be hesitant and reasoned.)

Good round-up of right blog commentary here as well.

Nobody here has, thank heavens, and I hope never see it elsewhere, but I idly note that gloating over the truth of this incident is, simply put, utterly fucking disgusting. Who knows what the outcome of all this will be but the end of this three year plus charade should not require even MORE innocent dead.

(And, happily, here's a good post from someone who isn't.)

Ned, that Galloway piece is heartbreaking.

that WSJ editorial linked upthread represents a real seachange in their thinking (sic). almost as surprising as bushski allowing the other day that "bring em on" was slightly intemperate and er, "misconstrued in certain parts of the world." no they understood you only too well. for all his (feigned)newfound humility in that press coneference w/blair, some of the old bush contempt surfaced in his remark about having to talk more "sophisticated" in the future.

The next two and a half years from Bush is going to be, how you say, revealing.

I actually do like how the right keeps overplaying the 'Saddam was evil (no duh)/Saddam was going to kill us all (er...)' card because the longer it gets from the time Saddam was captured the less point there is in using THAT as a justification for continuing presence.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 27 May 2006 13:58 (eighteen years ago) link

well yeah and the idea that we measure our moral conduct with the only standard being we're less bad then him

and what (ooo), Saturday, 27 May 2006 14:10 (eighteen years ago) link

id like to see saddam use that defense in court - 'ladies and gentlemen of the jury, yes, mistakes were made. thats what happens when you make an omelet. but 99% of my actions as leader did NOT kill innnocent people. hitler killed more people in a day than i did in a year!'

and what (ooo), Saturday, 27 May 2006 14:12 (eighteen years ago) link

THAT would be TV entertainment.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 27 May 2006 14:19 (eighteen years ago) link

Meantime, this story from a month and a half back is ultimately pretty damned telling. If no less that three Corps officers were already kicked out over this, then it's a bad sign, putting it mildly. The source used by the Washington Post now claims his words were distorted, so grain of salt, but I can't but say the phrase 'protest too much' is coming to mind, regrettably.

Iraq's prime minister said on Tuesday his patience was wearing thin with excuses from U.S. troops that they kill civilians by "mistake" and said he would launch an investigation into killings at Haditha last year.

"There is a limit to the acceptable excuses. Yes a mistake may happen but there is an acceptable limit to mistakes," Nuri al-Maliki told Reuters when asked about a U.S. investigation into the deaths of 24 Iraqis in the western town last November.

"We are worried about the increase in 'mistakes'. I am not saying that they are intentional [I'M JUST SAYING 'MISTAKES' IN QUOTES!]. But it is worrying for us," he said in an interview in his offices in Baghdad.
