Son of a bitch. I didn't know that skin grafts were full of holes.

I really thought that trypophobia was silliness or a very rare phobia experienced by total psychos, but now I see that there are many holes to be afraid of for very good reasons.

I used to love dried lotus blossoms, but NO MORE.

I saw the lotus boobs when I GISed trypophobia.

The feeling I get when I see patterns of holes (or lamprey mouths) is very precisely loathing. I feel disgust, anger, and hate. And pity, maybe.

I don't know if this related, but I have a definite irrational fear of olive loaf or really any type of bologna that has little round stuff embedded in it. I'm perfectly at peace with salami and pepperoni and their regular flecked patterns, but if a slice of bologna is anything but perfectly pink and consistent throughout, then it creeps me out hardcore.

Bridget Christie was on QI earlier this week and was talking about suffering from Trypophobia and not being believed by Sandi Toksvig and others. & i thought about this thread.

Shame i don't think she really stood out that much in the show. Was hoping she might, but not seen her on panel shows before.
& hadn't heard about her in a while. I know I enjoyed a couple of her stand up videos I watched.

It has been noted that holes occupy an unusual ontological position in human psychology, as people tend to refer to them as tangible and countable objects, when in fact they are the absence of something in another object. Holes have also been described as "ontologically parasitic" because they can only exist as aspects of another object.

it's interesting to me that the tryp- of trypophobia (Ancient Greek τρῦπα [trûpa, “hole”]) doesn't have anything to do with the greatest/grossest hole-y substance of all time, tripe (which has an unknown origin but may be Arabic or Old Norse).

budo jeru, Thursday, 16 January 2025 23:19 (eleven months ago)

i never looked into it until now, but had always assumed it meant "fear of tripe-like substances"

budo jeru, Thursday, 16 January 2025 23:20 (eleven months ago)

i don't think i'm afraid of a bunch of holes as much as i am disgusted by the notion of something infesting your skin? that seems different. altho i haven't read the thread and probably won't be

budo jeru, Thursday, 16 January 2025 23:22 (eleven months ago)

^ I think that's why it's a not uncommon syndrome, people have been afraid of disease for ages, and that's one symptom. Like small pox, measles, etc.

nickn, Thursday, 16 January 2025 23:25 (eleven months ago)

yeah. i tried doing a little research into it but was surprised i couldn't find anybody saying what you said, which seems like the obvious explanation. on the other hand, i'm dissuaded from digging too deeply into it because the internet is filled with unpleasant things and i don't want to fill my head with them
