I like my friend's take in the original e-mail

"Might be at the Glass House in Pomona, which is where a lot of secret gigs have taken place, but that's nowhere near Silver Lake!"

He's also come up with the clever device of referring to the greater L.A. area as "Silver Lake."

You need Twitter to stay on top of this... Looks like @scottrodger is the guy to follow.

Speaking of which, @TheScenestar will always be a hero for posting the exactly set times for almost all local shows.

for the record, if anyone has a mid-week karaoke itch they need to scratch and happen to find themselves in the valley and are ok with gays, the silver rail on burbank blvd has a really terrific tuesday karaoke night. first time i've EVER seen "babooshka" on a song list!

in point of fact, that bar is pretty great overall. eager to try some of the other gay valley dives! (oxwood room, anyone?)

Money is very much an object. What is the best place to stay where you can walk out the door and not have to get in a car?

Virginia Plain, Friday, 11 March 2011 21:22 (thirteen years ago) link

there are buses pretty much everywhere. if you stay downtown, you'll be near the red, purple, blue, and gold line trains.

minsktrans.by (get bent), Friday, 11 March 2011 21:45 (thirteen years ago) link

I think we're gonna stay at the Secret Garden. Kind of wanted to try something different, but it's a lot cheaper than any of the others.

Any of you Angelenos free to meet up? Will be there April 6 to 10. Also, any museum/gallery/etc. stuff we should know about?

Virginia Plain, Saturday, 12 March 2011 15:23 (thirteen years ago) link

Dang, I'll have to bow out -- normally that would be a free weekend but two good friends down here in OC are getting married and I'm already booked up. Have a great time in any event!

btw, what's the best/not-expensive way to get from LA to SF without flying or driving?

Fuck bein' hard, Dr Morbz is complicated (Dr Morbius), Saturday, 12 March 2011 16:42 (thirteen years ago) link

Bus or train being your choices...there seems to be a Greyhound web fare option at $42, where an initial Chinatown Bus search comes out at $55. Amtrak might actually work as well, though -- the Coast Starlight takes you from LA to Oakland with a bus connection into SF at $54, while a potentially quicker connection would the Pacific Surfliner to Santa Barbara with bus service from there to SF.

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 12 March 2011 17:15 (thirteen years ago) link

thx Ned

Fuck bein' hard, Dr Morbz is complicated (Dr Morbius), Saturday, 12 March 2011 17:16 (thirteen years ago) link

All things being equal and with an eye on various service alerts and trackwork being done, I'd suggest Amtrak -- if you did the last option (LA to SB) you'd pass through the actual surfside part of the route there; everything else after that is more inland, though going down the Salinas Valley is also a joy, and in all it's a part of California that fewer people see because they're usually using the 5 freeway in the Central Valley.

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 12 March 2011 17:17 (thirteen years ago) link

Should also say I've done all these routes before so I know I'm what talking about from experience! If the Megabus option still existed that would be the way to go but alas that barely lasted a year. Chinatown Bus options supposedly start at $29 but a quick check at pricing over the next two months kept turning up $55 as a baseline.

btw, what's the best/not-expensive way to get from LA to SF without flying or driving?

this might be not morbs-friendly but my experience w/ norcal to socal via craigslist rideshare has been pretty good. don't take greyhound, it takes forever.

iatee, Saturday, 12 March 2011 19:12 (thirteen years ago) link

two weeks pass...

...but if I have to stay at a WeHo or Hollywood hotel for 3-4 nights, any recs? Less than $120/night would be good, $95 would be better.

morbs the best western on franklin ave by the 101 freeway is a short walk to Hollywood and i think the prices are fairly reasonable. there's an above-average diner on the first floor as well. if you're as much of a fan of 'swingers' as i suspect you may be, there were several scenes filmed in that diner.

omar little, Monday, 28 March 2011 18:09 (thirteen years ago) link

yeah, less than a 10 min walk to hollywood and vine metro stop

Thursday, November 10 – 4 SUPER 8 FILMS BY LUTHER PRICE (ON FILM!) – 8 PM
A small collection of Luther Price’s legendary and controversial Super 8 films projected on their original format, including Sodom, Warm Broth, Clown, and Mr. Wonderful. In an article titled “Home Movies from Hell” in Bright Lights Film Journal, Gary Morris writes of Price: “He works in a disreputable format, appears in various guises in his own work from stylized, frozen-faced drag queen to naked performance artist to clown. Price’s film work has an oppressive intensity, envisioning an alienated world of often mindlessly repeated rituals and poses that entrap and suffocate his subjects ... Images of ruptured flesh and ghostly birthday parties are further ruptured and drained of life by Price’s torturous manipulations of the film, which can include chemical processing, filters, optical printing, re-photography, and even holes punched in the frame. What emerges is Price’s great subject — the breaches, breakdowns, and collapse of body, family, and society, and by extension all of life, in the face of unstoppable philosophical forces.”

Speaking of movie theaters being replaced, we went to see DRIVE at that One Colorado in Pasadena only to find that it is now one of these fucking places where you pay almost $30 for the privilege of being served a meal (which you pay for on top of the cover) and sitting in fancy seats while you watch the movie. And there we were at like noon thinking it was gonna be a cheap matinee. Fuck these places!

In other adam-related LA news, I finally went to the revolving bar atop the Bonaventure the other night. Is it bad that I thought it was kind of awesome? Downtown actually looks so beautiful from there.

one month passes...

When the man police have identified as a "person of interest" in Los Angeles' spate of recent arson attacks was sitting in the back of a squad car early Monday morning, a small group of witnesses gave him "the finger"-- and he returned the gesture with a smile, one witness said.

"It was creepy," said Rick Savage, a music producer who saw the incident at the intersection of Sunset Boulevard and Fairfax Avenue.

Savage said he was awake because he has been nervous about the string of arsons in recent days in his and other nearby neighborhoods. He said he had downloaded a police scanner application onto his iPad and went to the area at about 3:15 a.m. after hearing reports that authorities had tracked a person of interest in the case.
