i'm very sorry but can someone please delete this cut-and-paste format-disaster? i'll repost it legibly in a moment

Jones, do you still want me to do this? I don't mind. I enjoy my power.

Nu-moderator here, hi!

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 11:16 (twenty-one years ago) link

where is the facility to turn off search engine indexing on threads?

Alan (Alan), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 12:23 (twenty-one years ago) link

That feature was discussed, but as far as I know hasn't been implemented. When I get some time I may do this.

Andrew (enneff), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 13:09 (twenty-one years ago) link

Hi, can you remove a link on ILM please. It links to a spoof site using my name. Soliciters might start being involved soon, so I'd rather not have a link hanging arund on a site I use. Thanks guys.

What can you tell me about ESG?

Anna (Anna), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 13:10 (twenty-one years ago) link

graham has a noindex attribute for threads which puts a robots meta-tag in the html, but there are only 2 threads with this set. i can have a bash at adding the facility to the admin pages if you like. (obv testing etc)

Alan (Alan), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 13:34 (twenty-one years ago) link

Hi fellow moderators - I am having trouble giving admin privileges to a couple of my fellow ILFers - I keep getting an error message after I enter their names. What's wrong? If information is sensitive, could someone possibly email me off-list? I would really appreciate it. Thanks again.

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 19:56 (twenty-one years ago) link

Nordicskillz, I think the only ppl who can *hand on* admin privileges remain me, Tom, Alan, Andrew and Graham. Email some of the names/emails of who your designated co-mderators at ILF are and we'll do it for you.

mark s (mark s), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 20:30 (twenty-one years ago) link

Someone has been playing silly buggers with the what are you listening to thread and put in a background. Can it be removed?

Ed (dali), Thursday, 1 May 2003 06:21 (twenty-one years ago) link

Ed, done. This is my first mod action. Hope it's ok.

Alan (Alan), Thursday, 1 May 2003 07:51 (twenty-one years ago) link

I have a question. As this thread is linked at the bottom of every page (as "Problem?") would it be a good idea to move this thread on to another board, perhaps one dedicated to moderating? that way it doesn't keep popping up on new answers so much. just a thought.

Alan (Alan), Thursday, 1 May 2003 07:53 (twenty-one years ago) link

I thought the idea was that it did keep popping up in new answers so mods would see it and act on it.

Ed (dali), Thursday, 1 May 2003 08:05 (twenty-one years ago) link

yeah, yr right.

mods could e-mail subscribe to it?

Just thinking out loud really. all this new found power is going to my head.

p.s. i've written the "don't index this thread' code -- is it actually wanted?

Alan (Alan), Thursday, 1 May 2003 09:13 (twenty-one years ago) link

What, like a Googleproof facility? Could be very useful indeed...

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 1 May 2003 09:24 (twenty-one years ago) link

that's the bunny. it puts <META NAME="ROBOTS" CONTENT="NOINDEX, NOFOLLOW"> in the head of the HTML.

http://www.google.com/bot.html
http://www.robotstxt.org/wc/meta-user.html

Alan (Alan), Thursday, 1 May 2003 09:44 (twenty-one years ago) link

Sounds like a good idea but as with all mod powers, there should be guidelines as to when it ought to be used. It should be used sparingly. How will new and interested people find us if not through google.

Ed (dali), Thursday, 1 May 2003 10:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

interested people are boring.

RJG (RJG), Thursday, 1 May 2003 10:03 (twenty-one years ago) link

Yes, this needs to be mods-only or everything will get removed from Google. I think we need to make it harder for nazis to find us, for instance, but I'm not sure how much we have to worry about porn stuff.

I prefer this to be prominent in New Answers. It keeps the discussion and decisions public and open, it makes us more accountable, and email alerts would only alert me at home, not when I log in at work. I don't want ILE emails going to my work address, as it would prove too distracting, and ILE would take over my entire life rather than only my home time.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Thursday, 1 May 2003 10:51 (twenty-one years ago) link

mods should now be able to "googleguard" threads on the admin message page. it's next to the "Un/Lock Thread" button.

(This is a good sign that I am getting to grips with the code, but I'm still working on commenting it all. I got majorly sidetracked understanding the trackback bits and pieces)

Alan (Alan), Thursday, 1 May 2003 11:42 (twenty-one years ago) link

can someone remove my last post in the American Idol 2 thread. I don't think its right. PLEASE.

Chris V. (Chris V), Thursday, 1 May 2003 12:33 (twenty-one years ago) link

Either someone has removed the offending item (it'd be good to say, to save other modsw trying to trace it) or it is as far from something needing deletion as I can imagine.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Friday, 2 May 2003 16:19 (twenty-one years ago) link

If Mark S is still here, is it still OK to promote amateurist and slutsky to ILF administrators? Thank you again!

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Friday, 2 May 2003 19:07 (twenty-one years ago) link

Nordicskillz I too am getting an error message!! Contact Alan: he's technical overseer

mark s (mark s), Friday, 2 May 2003 19:27 (twenty-one years ago) link

tx!

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Friday, 2 May 2003 19:28 (twenty-one years ago) link

Someone posted spam about how all carnivores should criticize Pepsi for their "billion-dollar monkey"... ? I've gotten rid of a couple, it was funny on one thread but it seems to have been posted on a number of them..... if you find any more , link to them here

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Saturday, 3 May 2003 16:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

I'm deleting them as well, unless someone has already responded. There are loads.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Saturday, 3 May 2003 16:08 (twenty-one years ago) link

Okay, I've deleted a few dozen, left a couple where someone had replied. We may have got through the nuisance now - none for a few minutes at least. The IP was 200.76.229.149, in case that is ever useful info. I tried a google for the organisation's name, with a thought of emailing them to tell them to stop, or to start a proper thread, but nothing.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Saturday, 3 May 2003 16:34 (twenty-one years ago) link

I got em all on I Love Music, Martin. * high five *

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Saturday, 3 May 2003 16:40 (twenty-one years ago) link

Well done, Tracer. As it happens, I've deleted about five more since what I posted above, so they've not given up yet.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Saturday, 3 May 2003 16:42 (twenty-one years ago) link

It could be a lone nutter rather than an organization.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Saturday, 3 May 2003 16:43 (twenty-one years ago) link

Yes, very possible.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Saturday, 3 May 2003 16:45 (twenty-one years ago) link

didn't realize it was happening across the board when i replied on the ILF/ILE filmtalk thread. feel free to delete it (+ my reply) there too if you want

jones (actual), Saturday, 3 May 2003 16:59 (twenty-one years ago) link

I can't see any reason to delete them if someone responds. It's not as if they are ideologically offensive or anything. I just felt we didn't need 100 copies of the message.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Saturday, 3 May 2003 17:06 (twenty-one years ago) link

Slight delay here, but here's the link containing the post where I want the email address deleted. Thanks.

Where are Birdland....

done

felicity (felicity), Saturday, 3 May 2003 23:37 (twenty-one years ago) link

Alan, I've written to you about the ILF mods thing above - did you get my message? Thanks!

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Sunday, 4 May 2003 08:41 (twenty-one years ago) link

Can some nice moderator out there resize the pics in this post for me:

YIKES!?!?

Thanks....

hstencil, Monday, 5 May 2003 15:05 (twenty-one years ago) link

We could put tags on them that restrain the dimensions but they'd still use up the same bandwidth because they'd be the same size. Best to resize them at your end if you wanted them smaller in both regards. Also, we could turn them into links instead.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Monday, 5 May 2003 15:10 (twenty-one years ago) link

ed what have you got against playing silly buggers on a thread called "that thread's all fancy colored for me", i mean it's silly but it WAS my contribution to that thread, i spent a bit of time on it, and i made sure it was readable to everyone

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Monday, 5 May 2003 16:12 (twenty-one years ago) link

Hey moderators! And Alan! I've noticed a couple of times when going to administer a post, especially long ones, that when I try to "save" the changes nothing at all happens. I click the "submit" button and it just sits there and does fuck all. No hourglass to even indicate that IE is doing anything about it. No nothing. Any ideas what's happening here? And is there any way around this? (I've tried reloading the page again, logging off and then on, doing it from another machine, etc.)

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Monday, 5 May 2003 17:04 (twenty-one years ago) link

I've not hit this at all, Sean.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Monday, 5 May 2003 17:08 (twenty-one years ago) link

This is what I hit when attempting to Googleproof Calum's name at the end of some of Blount's swans. I didn't look at the HTML code, but I would guess that the problem is that the admin page isn't doing a POST where it needs to.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 5 May 2003 17:15 (twenty-one years ago) link

I have also experienced this, though length hasn't seem to caused it.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Monday, 5 May 2003 17:23 (twenty-one years ago) link

It's not about LENGTH, it's about WIDTH...

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 5 May 2003 17:25 (twenty-one years ago) link

youmean its not how you use it Dan?

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Monday, 5 May 2003 17:34 (twenty-one years ago) link

Any chance of making the pic on this thread here: Black Nasty: C/D? into a link?

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Tuesday, 6 May 2003 02:40 (twenty-one years ago) link

I flagged the subject line instead. Though admittedly it's pretty dumb and may be a good candidate for outright deletion.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Tuesday, 6 May 2003 03:05 (twenty-one years ago) link

Delete the fucker. Delete all hipster dorks while you're at it.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Tuesday, 6 May 2003 03:28 (twenty-one years ago) link
