Ned Raggett, Saturday, 12 March 2011 19:48 (thirteen years ago) link

Fuck bein' hard, Dr Morbz is complicated (Dr Morbius), Saturday, 12 March 2011 19:56 (thirteen years ago) link

two weeks pass...

...but if I have to stay at a WeHo or Hollywood hotel for 3-4 nights, any recs? Less than $120/night would be good, $95 would be better.

morbs the best western on franklin ave by the 101 freeway is a short walk to Hollywood and i think the prices are fairly reasonable. there's an above-average diner on the first floor as well. if you're as much of a fan of 'swingers' as i suspect you may be, there were several scenes filmed in that diner.

omar little, Monday, 28 March 2011 18:09 (thirteen years ago) link

yeah, less than a 10 min walk to hollywood and vine metro stop

buzza, Monday, 28 March 2011 18:14 (thirteen years ago) link

also: i've seen bam margera at this diner TWICE

omar little, Monday, 28 March 2011 18:17 (thirteen years ago) link

lol, I've never seen Swingers. Bam, mmmmm.

hey LA-ers: every time we go to our LA, on our way back (near the grapevine) i see this ... 'thing' off the side of the road, it looks like a field of giant thread spools, and miniature castles. does anyone know what i'm talking about and if so can they explain it to me?

Financially strapped KCET-TV is in talks to sell its landmark Sunset Boulevard studio to the Church of Scientology, according to people who know about the pending deal.

The Los Angeles television station, which is struggling to rebuild viewership after its recent split from PBS, plans to move its operations to a smaller location, real estate brokers said. Station officials have been touring potential sites, brokers said.

Terms of the potential deal were unavailable, but the 4.5-acre property at 4401 W. Sunset Blvd. has an assessed value of $14.1 million, according to county records. Individuals inside the station and real estate consultants who were not authorized to speak publicly about the transaction confirmed the pending sale.

How far up the Grapevine are we talking about here?

apparently it's not up the grapevine, it's just after castaic?

i was very excited to learn that nudie's rodeo tailors' longtime address was 5015 lankershim -- walking distance from me! looking at google maps, they sell discount futons at that site now. but nudie's shop held out until 1994.

on a similar note, been really enjoying the valley relics FB page. do they have an actual store? their website doesn't work

so I priced that Best Western near 101; in July the rack rate is about $200 a night, and Travelocity doesn't have it cheaper. May have to opt for a Quality Inn nearby, but probably won't reserve anything for another week, until I talk to my friend in the Valley.

Try Hotwire. You can get a pretty good idea of which hotels they are here: http://www.betterbidding.com/index.php?showforum=427&

Spencer Chow, Friday, 1 April 2011 18:22 (thirteen years ago) link

never used hotwire but with that forum feedback tool i might be inclined

Aerosol, Friday, 1 April 2011 19:22 (thirteen years ago) link

Morbs, why don't you stay at the Secret Garden in WeHo? Looks like its $135/night in July. If you can find a conventioner to share with you, even better. I've stayed there before and I'm staying there next week--the only thing is you might have to make conversation with the owner, but he'll tell you about Frank Sinatra and Chasen's.

i know people who have stayed here, seemed ok. close to LACMA, fairfax district, not too far from weho or hollywood

buzza, Friday, 1 April 2011 20:29 (thirteen years ago) link

VaPlain, the LA stay is AFTER the baseball convention, which is in Long Beach. (And I'm paying $119 a night there, solo, bcz I skip roommates on vacation too.)

Dr. M., perhaps you will meet a revivalist baseballer who you can invite to share your room for a romantic Hollywood weekend.

My sister's planning on renting a car; is this really necessary? The only out of town we might do is go to Pasadena.

Any classic old Hollywood recommendations for us?

Virginia Plain, Tuesday, 5 April 2011 17:08 (thirteen years ago) link

Having a car certainly makes it easier to get around Los Angeles. I know there's a big public transportation contingent on here, but the public transportation isn't that great. Renting a car will certainly save you a lot of time sitting on buses.

Doomsday Derelict (J3ff T.), Tuesday, 5 April 2011 17:39 (thirteen years ago) link

It depends a lot on where your home base is and where you want to be going from there.
As a native to the area I would have never considered not having a car back in the day but on more resent visits I have been using a car less and less.

Aerosol, Tuesday, 5 April 2011 17:49 (thirteen years ago) link

LA -> pasadena = definitely rent a car for that

Sittin' Fran (donna rouge), Tuesday, 5 April 2011 18:31 (thirteen years ago) link

gold line goes to pasadena, people complain about how slow it is tho

buzza, Tuesday, 5 April 2011 18:43 (thirteen years ago) link

180/181 bus goes from Hollywood to Pasadena, so if you're in Hollywood it may be as fast as red line to Union station then gold line to Pasadena. Having a car is nice, though.

Are there any good restaurants or bars near Selma and Sunset?

Virginia Plain, Thursday, 7 April 2011 00:36 (thirteen years ago) link

i've heard good things about pinches tacos (right across from chateau marmont)

Are there any good restaurants or bars near Selma and Sunset?

selma and sunset run parallel? which intersection?

butterfield earth (get bent), Thursday, 7 April 2011 02:32 (thirteen years ago) link

they converge on the westside (which i didn't know until about an hour ago - i was all set to recommend bodega wine bar)

Sittin' Fran (donna rouge), Thursday, 7 April 2011 02:43 (thirteen years ago) link

i didn't know it either. i'm still kinda westside-illiterate.

butterfield earth (get bent), Thursday, 7 April 2011 02:50 (thirteen years ago) link

in that case, i highly recommend bar marmont!

butterfield earth (get bent), Thursday, 7 April 2011 02:51 (thirteen years ago) link

a.o.c. is awesome for wine/small plates/atmosphere and is on 3rd and crescent heights. you'd have to drive or take a cab, but it's not super far.

butterfield earth (get bent), Thursday, 7 April 2011 03:03 (thirteen years ago) link

that's where the sunset strip more or less begins, avoid on weekends at the very least

buzza, Thursday, 7 April 2011 03:54 (thirteen years ago) link

We went to chateau marmont for dinner and we loved it. Is that cheesy? We're saving bar marmont for another night. Thanks for the suggestions!

Virginia Plain, Thursday, 7 April 2011 04:02 (thirteen years ago) link

If it's what I think it is, it's the Honor Ranch Gas Storage Site "a repurposed oil field where wells are now injected with natural gas, coming via pipelines from the north, for storage before being distributed through the urban grid" (from the latest CLUI Lay Of The Land newsletter)

Stockhausen's Ekranoplan Quartet (Elvis Telecom), Thursday, 7 April 2011 04:18 (thirteen years ago) link

I witnessed the quickest pickup I've EVER seen on a Gold Line train the other day. I almost wanted to shake the dude's hand it was so impressive! He got on the train, sat down opposite this woman and was typing her number into his phone in, like, two minutes, I swear. So...go Gold Line.

Pompoussin (admrl), Thursday, 7 April 2011 14:32 (thirteen years ago) link

Morbs you might want to check the Beverly Laurel hotel, might be a little bit too far south for you but the price is pretty good and it was pretty clean last time i stayed there

Aerosol, Thursday, 7 April 2011 14:56 (thirteen years ago) link

Is it possible to get to Griffith observatory via public transportation? I think we should have rented a car after all...

Virginia Plain, Thursday, 7 April 2011 16:29 (thirteen years ago) link

will consider, Aerosol, but even w/ limits of transit I think I'd like to be closer to a train line.

Now I'm even thinking of starting earlier to spend 4th of July weekend in either LA or SF.

your generation appalls me (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 7 April 2011 16:37 (thirteen years ago) link

there is a bus that goes up hillhurst to the observatory - i think you can catch it at the sunset/vermont metro stop

buzza, Thursday, 7 April 2011 16:41 (thirteen years ago) link

looks like the shuttles only run on weekends right now:
