will consider, Aerosol, but even w/ limits of transit I think I'd like to be closer to a train line.

Now I'm even thinking of starting earlier to spend 4th of July weekend in either LA or SF.

there is a bus that goes up hillhurst to the observatory - i think you can catch it at the sunset/vermont metro stop

buzza, Thursday, 7 April 2011 16:41 (thirteen years ago) link

looks like the shuttles only run on weekends right now:

butterfield earth (get bent), Thursday, 7 April 2011 16:57 (thirteen years ago) link

It's a nice shuttle, I've used it before.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 7 April 2011 17:05 (thirteen years ago) link

not recommended: hiking up the mountain without using the designated walking path, especially while hungover

Sittin' Fran (donna rouge), Thursday, 7 April 2011 17:07 (thirteen years ago) link

(not that i'd know...)

Sittin' Fran (donna rouge), Thursday, 7 April 2011 17:08 (thirteen years ago) link

Rolling down the hill, though...

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 7 April 2011 17:08 (thirteen years ago) link

What happened to the sun? I think we'll wait till the weekend for Griffith park, and that way maybe it won't be overcast and we can hop the shuttle.

Gonna go to lacma and to look at historical downtown buildings...any good places to eat around there?

Virginia Plain, Thursday, 7 April 2011 18:32 (thirteen years ago) link

Downtown, or near LACMA? Because those are two very different locations. Unless you're talking about MOCA?

Doomsday Derelict (J3ff T.), Thursday, 7 April 2011 18:39 (thirteen years ago) link

Well, yeah, we were going to go to lacma and then downtown, but we've decided to just do downtown and moca.

Virginia Plain, Thursday, 7 April 2011 19:12 (thirteen years ago) link

if you're going to moca, you can take the california plaza escalator down bunker hill afterward and get pupusas/tacos/etc at grand central market

butterfield earth (get bent), Thursday, 7 April 2011 20:03 (thirteen years ago) link

Or even ride the Angel's Flight train if in operation. (Did it shut down again?)

nickn, Thursday, 7 April 2011 20:30 (thirteen years ago) link

i was gonna say angel's flight but (a) dunno if it's open (b) i don't want to be responsible for anyone's early demise via ancient and rickety tourist attraction

butterfield earth (get bent), Thursday, 7 April 2011 20:36 (thirteen years ago) link

Best to look at it from afar, I suppose. She could walk down the steps next to it, though.

nickn, Thursday, 7 April 2011 20:39 (thirteen years ago) link

watch yourself walking around town

omar little, Thursday, 7 April 2011 20:46 (thirteen years ago) link

We rode the angel's flight train and we ate papusas, so thanks for the suggestions. Saw a lot of awesome buildings, but missed the Ed ruscha mural--is that still there? Went to el Carmen finally. For tomorrow; is Hollywood forever cemetery a good place to go? Anything else interesting to do around there!

Virginia Plain, Friday, 8 April 2011 05:28 (thirteen years ago) link

eh, it's okay. it's in a scuzzy neighborhood.

butterfield earth (get bent), Friday, 8 April 2011 05:33 (thirteen years ago) link

when my friend and i drove through the cemetery we saw a peacock cage!

Sittin' Fran (donna rouge), Friday, 8 April 2011 05:53 (thirteen years ago) link

it's also fun to play "spot the famous dead person" if you're into that sort of thing

Sittin' Fran (donna rouge), Friday, 8 April 2011 05:53 (thirteen years ago) link

will ponder trip to Forsrest Lawn to visit Buster Keaton & Stan Laurel

your generation appalls me (Dr Morbius), Friday, 8 April 2011 19:14 (thirteen years ago) link

The cemetery trip is on hold because my sister doesn't like dead people. Instead we are going to Schindler house, farmer's market, la brea tar pits, and lacma. Any interesting stuff we shouldn't miss around those places?

Also, is the polo club at the Beverly hills hotel a good place to go? Or is there a more laid back place to eat at that hotel?

Virginia Plain, Friday, 8 April 2011 19:25 (thirteen years ago) link

the new silver lake meadow is a nice little green space

buzza, Sunday, 10 April 2011 01:20 (thirteen years ago) link

anyone else hitting up cicLAvia today?

Sittin' Fran (donna rouge), Sunday, 10 April 2011 17:47 (thirteen years ago) link

Goodbye Los Angeles, everything I did was amazing, except for the Farmer's Market; why did no one tell me not to go there? Mad jealous of all of you.

Virginia Plain, Monday, 11 April 2011 02:11 (thirteen years ago) link

aw i dig the farmer's market. :-( i always go into monsieur marcel hoping for a good sale.

butterfield earth (get bent), Monday, 11 April 2011 02:55 (thirteen years ago) link

I was there. Sooo many people!

naus, Monday, 11 April 2011 05:39 (thirteen years ago) link

it was awesome! already anticipating the next one

Sittin' Fran (donna rouge), Monday, 11 April 2011 06:25 (thirteen years ago) link

Yeah. Me and three friends rode from La Puente into Downtown. Met up with my old roommate who now lives on Spring, and spent the day on my bike pretty much. Everybody was so happy and polite, and for a crowd of 100k+, there was ZERO hostility.

naus, Monday, 11 April 2011 08:23 (thirteen years ago) link

i didn't go, but i took a walk locally out of solidarity.

butterfield earth (get bent), Monday, 11 April 2011 17:55 (thirteen years ago) link

I was hoping for more fresh produce from the Farmer's Market, and less chain restaurants. We ate at the counter at Phil's Deli--that was kind of cool. I immensely preferred the Grand Central Market though.

Why didn't anyone tell me that there was an Ed Ruscha exhibit at the Gagosian Beverly Hills? You expect me to do my own research?

We didn't see the cicLAvia . . . but we spent Sunday walking around our hotel neighborhood and peeking in open houses. We've got our eye on a 3 million number in the Hollywood Hills.

Virginia Plain, Monday, 11 April 2011 18:33 (thirteen years ago) link

that's not really what this farmer's market is known for. it's known for the restaurant stands (and i'm sure the starbucks helps them pay the rent).

butterfield earth (get bent), Monday, 11 April 2011 18:37 (thirteen years ago) link

Yeah, I kind of got that impression. Oh, we ate at Pinches Tacos on our last day--that was really good. Thanks again for all of the help--I would have been lost without this thread. Carry on with your fascinating Angeleno lives. . . .

Virginia Plain, Monday, 11 April 2011 18:47 (thirteen years ago) link

the citrus stands at the farmer's market are A+ - although the satsuma mandarins i bought from there went bad after three days >:(

Sittin' Fran (donna rouge), Monday, 11 April 2011 18:50 (thirteen years ago) link

the 3rd street farmer's market isn't a "farmer's market" as such. it's a bunch permanent vendors and little restaurants, some of them selling produce yes but it's the same stuff you would get at the local ralph's tbh. it had and still does have i guess some throwback charm but that's hard to see because of the grove and other adjacent franchises.

buzza, Monday, 11 April 2011 18:52 (thirteen years ago) link

yeah a lot of the charm that exists is muffled by caruso's monstrosity. if he becomes mayor i wonder how long it would take for sinatra to be piped out of speakers on every street corner in town?

omar little, Monday, 11 April 2011 18:55 (thirteen years ago) link

The Gumbo Pot and the Singaporian food at the Banana Leaf in the Farmer's Market are both A+ stops (along with the already mentioned Monsieur Marcel)

Stockhausen's Ekranoplan Quartet (Elvis Telecom), Monday, 11 April 2011 21:34 (thirteen years ago) link

Oh, yeah, I wanted to go to the Banana Leaf but my sis wasn't feeling it. We also walked into the monsieur Marcel but were a bit intimidated.

Virginia Plain, Monday, 11 April 2011 21:44 (thirteen years ago) link

i hit up pampas grill (brazilian bbq) like once a week - early bird 25% off before 11:30 am is crucial

tremendoid, Monday, 11 April 2011 22:45 (thirteen years ago) link

Still reeling from CycLAvia. IIRC the next one is in July. Great place for a meetup, if anybody's down.

naus, Tuesday, 12 April 2011 10:26 (thirteen years ago) link

Sorry, CicLAvia.

naus, Tuesday, 12 April 2011 10:27 (thirteen years ago) link

I might be there in July.

donna rouge and i are participating in the adult spelling bee down in long beach! root for us! if i win, i'm giving half the prize money to doctors without borders.

y'all did not root for us hard enough :(

BUT we got lucille's smokehouse bbq and went to fingerprints afterward, so it's all good!

boehner und der club of gore (donna rouge), Monday, 18 April 2011 03:15 (thirteen years ago) link

also wtf kind of word is "ecesis" anyway

boehner und der club of gore (donna rouge), Monday, 18 April 2011 03:19 (thirteen years ago) link

my losing word was aureole. i spelled it a-u-r-i instead of a-u-r-e, even though i was TOTALLY THINKING it was an "e" as i was saying "i." grrrr.
