The Gumbo Pot and the Singaporian food at the Banana Leaf in the Farmer's Market are both A+ stops (along with the already mentioned Monsieur Marcel)

there's a shockingly upgraded menu at House of Pies, takes their diner food from a C to a B+ imo.

the sfv is good for bbq, kcbbq on magnolia is a good spot. boneyard bistro is tremendous if pricey. pasadena has huge bbq joints all over the place, too. hollywood and the east side are pretty sparse for that. i'm pretty hungry tbh.

That weekend stretch is free for me at present -- DodgerFAP, then?

Ned Raggett, Monday, 9 May 2011 14:44 (thirteen years ago) link

I'm already going to Dodger Stadium on the 8th with the seamhead convention (departing from Long Beach, where I'll be the preceding 5 days)

xpost - noted -- and there's Donna's point there too! So let's just aim for June 16th as some kinda FAP.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 9 May 2011 16:42 (thirteen years ago) link

Argh, correct that, JULY 16th, Saturday. Anyway.

hollywood/western area is a little grungy, but you'll be in walking distance of several thai restaurants!

Nardil the Human MAOI (get bent), Monday, 9 May 2011 19:14 (thirteen years ago) link

i went to thailand plaza on friday, one of those places where people sing while you eat. the first guy who performed closed his set out with "hava nagila" and all these thai families were dancing to it!

The Nethercutt is cool for the full tour including the pipe organ demo (on the very top floor). It's a must stop if you're a car fanatic (took a couple photo there last time)

so I'm thinking if I take one studio tour, it'll be Paramount, cuz it's only $35 and I wanna walk through the gate and eat in the commissary. I'm not paying $70 to go in Universal's theme park solely to take a tram that goes past the Psycho house.

also, there's some old silent-era studio north of H'wood Blvd that has tours by appointment?

resistance does not require a firearm (Dr Morbius), Monday, 16 May 2011 14:59 (thirteen years ago) link

Universal does have the best studio tour, mostly because they have the exterior sets. Paramount isn't a terribly exciting lot, to be honest. Mostly just soundstages and (admittedly pretty) office buildings.

Doomsday Derelict (J3ff T.), Monday, 16 May 2011 15:42 (thirteen years ago) link

the lines for the universal tour can get very very long in peak season (which starts memorial day weekend; i.e., in reality it's already started). the theme park's not so great but the views from the top level are stunning.

wacky onassis (get bent), Monday, 16 May 2011 19:04 (thirteen years ago) link

universal city walk is a shithole and it costs a fortune to park there, too

strongly recommend. unless you're a bitch (mayor jingleberries), Monday, 16 May 2011 21:14 (thirteen years ago) link

Fuck parking there, there's a Red Line stop.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 16 May 2011 21:32 (thirteen years ago) link

...which is what the good dr. will have to use, anyhow. (i would, however, suggest using the free shuttle)

naches supreme (donna rouge), Monday, 16 May 2011 21:33 (thirteen years ago) link

oh, I'm studying the transit maps like a trainspotter

still not apt to blow $70 on a bloody theme park unless someone wants to drop acid and break into the Bates Motel w/ me

Hi dere

Aerosol, Monday, 16 May 2011 21:49 (thirteen years ago) link

Paramount is a much nicer lot than Fox, Sony, or Universal IMO. It still has a faint golden age of hollywood aura to it while the others feel really corporate and '80s. I've never been to WB though, and I don't know what any of the tours are like.

geir was right (wk), Tuesday, 17 May 2011 00:05 (thirteen years ago) link

I like the Warner lot the best. But I've been there in a business capacity, not on the tour.
