I actually do like how the right keeps overplaying the 'Saddam was evil (no duh)/Saddam was going to kill us all (er...)' card because the longer it gets from the time Saddam was captured the less point there is in using THAT as a justification for continuing presence.

id like to see saddam use that defense in court - 'ladies and gentlemen of the jury, yes, mistakes were made. thats what happens when you make an omelet. but 99% of my actions as leader did NOT kill innnocent people. hitler killed more people in a day than i did in a year!'

Meantime, this story from a month and a half back is ultimately pretty damned telling. If no less that three Corps officers were already kicked out over this, then it's a bad sign, putting it mildly. The source used by the Washington Post now claims his words were distorted, so grain of salt, but I can't but say the phrase 'protest too much' is coming to mind, regrettably.

Iraq's prime minister said on Tuesday his patience was wearing thin with excuses from U.S. troops that they kill civilians by "mistake" and said he would launch an investigation into killings at Haditha last year.

"There is a limit to the acceptable excuses. Yes a mistake may happen but there is an acceptable limit to mistakes," Nuri al-Maliki told Reuters when asked about a U.S. investigation into the deaths of 24 Iraqis in the western town last November.

"We are worried about the increase in 'mistakes'. I am not saying that they are intentional [I'M JUST SAYING 'MISTAKES' IN QUOTES!]. But it is worrying for us," he said in an interview in his offices in Baghdad.
