i think the point is that if you really given any thought to racial/racist stereotypes especially in a public forum then you're inevitably gonna be seen as perpetuating them, wittingly or not.

cos the short simple answer is "racial stereotypes are stupid let's talk about something else"

I think the negative thing is that instead of explaining your experience with individuals and asking about it, you're about one step off of saying "they are not (a) cheap people." While there is a "black culture" in the US, it's not monolithic, although you're right -- some cultural things like how much to tip seem to vary.

But this entire beating around the bush and acting like it's a racial thing is... not really the way to approach cultural issues.

i dunno i find a lot of not poor people are excruciatingly mean when it comes to tipping after a meal but this is back in lol britishes territory, which is odd since we are notoriously whiter than american whites

what I'm wondering if why or if this is a cultural thing. that article did imply that blacks tip less though the margin is not as eye-popping as people have made it sound. i was part of an international club in college and a lot of them weren't really good tippers since they didn't have that culture there. that I understand. when we're talking about people who have been in this country their whole lives it gets a little more confusing

I guess the whole thing could be a self-perpetuating cycle though - like I said I've heard it so much by people in the service industry that I'm guessing they don't really get great service, which leads to them leaving smaller tips...I remember reading something on this board about how there really was a race issue, it seems like it's really just a shitty one that's self-perpetuating all the less

I def did notice some patterns w/tips when I delivered for Jimmy John's in lolcollege but eh don't see the point of talking about ancecdotal stuff like that really
