service charges are rarely included

really? feels increasingly common

blueski, Wednesday, 22 June 2011 19:27 (thirteen years ago) link

maybe (not in my experience). it's definitely still the exception though.

caek, Wednesday, 22 June 2011 19:28 (thirteen years ago) link

so what's the tipping policy across the pond

dayo, Wednesday, 22 June 2011 19:29 (thirteen years ago) link

10-15% in restaurants unless a service charge is included, round up in taxis, and no tips anywhere else (unless i'm forgetting something)

caek, Wednesday, 22 June 2011 19:31 (thirteen years ago) link

that infographic looks/sounds like it was ripped off of some 15-year-old source, hence all the stuff about "dollars are appreciated"

☂ (max), Wednesday, 22 June 2011 19:45 (thirteen years ago) link

maybe they mean aesthetically

lemon kerrang! (jjjusten), Wednesday, 22 June 2011 19:46 (thirteen years ago) link

dollars haven't appreciated, they've depreciated thanks to the fed's gutless fiscal policies!!!!!

dayo, Wednesday, 22 June 2011 19:51 (thirteen years ago) link

"yes your dollar is very pretty, can i please have some actual money instead thank you"

There was a Planet Money piece about tipping on All Things Considered today. Cliffs: quality of service has little impact on amt of tips.

Mr. Patrick Batman (WmC), Wednesday, 22 June 2011 23:27 (thirteen years ago) link

there's truth to that. Consider the scenario that the kitchen takes too long to get the food out, customer complains, bill is voided by the manager. In that scenario, no matter how good I was to the table, it seemed just a matter of personal principle whether they tipped me or not (usually they left a tip, especially cuz they just got a free meal, but not always).

btw thanks to this thread I dreamed I was back at my old restaurant job from 8 years ago last night and woke up in a cold sweat. u owe me new unstained sheets ILX

well im also p skeptical of most ppl's ability to accurately evaluate 'quality of service'

surely that should be 'sbing frogsby'

the waitress and the frogbs (darraghmac), Thursday, 23 June 2011 00:29 (thirteen years ago) link

up to an individual to decide tbf?

the waitress and the frogbs (darraghmac), Thursday, 23 June 2011 00:30 (thirteen years ago) link

hey is it a thing to comp someone for some non-existent slight with the tacit understanding that you will get tipped extra as a way to shift money from the house to the staff?

Philip Nunez, Thursday, 23 June 2011 00:36 (thirteen years ago) link

oh yea, that's why they never let any of the waiters in my restaurant have access to 'comp' thigns on the computer.

SBing crosby (Neanderthal), Thursday, 23 June 2011 00:37 (thirteen years ago) link

they actually instituted a policy that you had to turn in your Buy One Get One free postcards intact at the end of the night because waiters in other locations of the franchise were ripping them in two and duping stupid managers into comping the meal of the table who brought in the postcard, and another random table that didn't, and pocketing the difference.

SBing crosby (Neanderthal), Thursday, 23 June 2011 00:38 (thirteen years ago) link

hm.. these are truly pro tips!

Philip Nunez, Thursday, 23 June 2011 00:41 (thirteen years ago) link

here's a question - do rightwingers tip? The general argument I have seen on this thread for why people should tip is that restaurant workers would otherwise starve. But a radical free-marketeer would surely just say "that's their problem, I am just going to pay the agreed contractual amount for the food I have received". Or do they?

(steve buscemi in reservoir dogs youtube video)

thomp, Thursday, 23 June 2011 11:24 (thirteen years ago) link

not 'it's their problem' rather 'my intervention would skew the market, helping nobody vis-a-vis long term resolution of this alleged imbalance'

the waitress and the frogbs (darraghmac), Thursday, 23 June 2011 11:31 (thirteen years ago) link

i would think most people have seriously wondered why they need to tip but do it anyway

the waitress and the frogbs (darraghmac), Thursday, 23 June 2011 13:27 (thirteen years ago) link

tipping at restaurants/bars I understand. tipping at a casino is something that i really am against (but do anyway because i don't want to be a dick) since they rake in money hand over fist over ass and run a business specifically designed to prepare you psychologically to give them your cash. surely they can pay the dealers properly!?

frogbs, Thursday, 23 June 2011 13:28 (thirteen years ago) link

Back to the casino, and the circle is complete.

Man, when you set posts up like that frogs, it's kinda like the fratboy who says "hey watch this" before accidentally blowing his nuts off with a firecracker...

I mean, fratboy who sets himself on fire doing a flaming shot, sure, but that hypothetical seems excessive

But how much should the frat boy tip the bartender on the flaming shot?

I was imagining it having something to do with how to tip strippers of different "races".

jon /via/ chi 2.0, Thursday, 23 June 2011 16:06 (thirteen years ago) link

there's a 'stiffing' joke in here somewhere

the waitress and the frogbs (darraghmac), Thursday, 23 June 2011 16:08 (thirteen years ago) link

apparently it involves pissing, so I am just going to assume it's something about a friend who didn't tip a hooker after accidentally pissing on him/her

chupacabra - a delicious burrito (DJP), Thursday, 23 June 2011 16:08 (thirteen years ago) link

maybe the hooker pissed on the friend, but it wasn't in the pre-negotiated terms, and he forgot to tip her for it?
