If we hadn't tried a bunch of other options first, do you think we would still be reduced to this? This is not something that has been undertaken lightly or without debate.

kate (kate), Friday, 18 July 2003 08:52 (twenty-one years ago) link

Isn't it a bit harsh to get in touch with his work? Isn't it just possible to block the ip address?

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Friday, 18 July 2003 08:53 (twenty-one years ago) link

yes. it is v harsh. he's harmless.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Friday, 18 July 2003 08:54 (twenty-one years ago) link

i think its fine as it is to just delete his threads.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Friday, 18 July 2003 08:55 (twenty-one years ago) link

I was just trying to summon back the old Calum, who was merely irritating, not aggressive, and at times capable of intelligent conversation. But I guess he's beyond hope now. *sigh*

Tuomas (Tuomas), Friday, 18 July 2003 08:59 (twenty-one years ago) link

By the way, how do you know he posts from work?

Tuomas (Tuomas), Friday, 18 July 2003 08:59 (twenty-one years ago) link

i think it's a lost cause tuomas: also it's rubbish that calum wasn't aggressive — he turned into "spooner" the moment someone argued with him (especially a woman): his idea of "free speech" has always been absolute prtoection of free speech for HIM but the moment anyone says something HE dislikes he was calling out for it to be deleted by the moderators or for other posters to be banned — and taking up a lot of our time doing this

i'm trying to find the recent ADMIN page which explains the decision in full, but search is disabled and i can't get onto the uncategorised total list at the moment

mark s (mark s), Friday, 18 July 2003 09:04 (twenty-one years ago) link

Yeah, but he did post normal, non-irrittating comments as well, and he was at least able to defend his point of view with some sense, even if few agreed with him. This new guy, he doesn't even try.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Friday, 18 July 2003 09:10 (twenty-one years ago) link

I'm feeling kinda evil here - guys I'm not this other chap. I'm a trouble maker, true, but not this other guy. I'll stop this rubbish tho.

Spoonered (Spoonered), Friday, 18 July 2003 09:10 (twenty-one years ago) link

If you're really telling the truth, great! And, if you want talk about other things than titties and arse, you have at least my blessing.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Friday, 18 July 2003 09:14 (twenty-one years ago) link

what stopping means = "stop playing deliberate timewasting mindfuck games with the moderators"

mark s (mark s), Friday, 18 July 2003 09:24 (twenty-one years ago) link

Torture a puppy in front of him and we'll soon see if he isn't Calum.

(Now I'm not a moderator I can say really unhelpful things like this!)

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Friday, 18 July 2003 09:35 (twenty-one years ago) link

Someone please go change the name reference on this post to the correct psuedonym? I'm sorry!

Ally (mlescaut), Friday, 18 July 2003 13:23 (twenty-one years ago) link

I don't think Tico's identity is a big secret.

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 18 July 2003 13:31 (twenty-one years ago) link

That post?? It doesnt matter - it's not a secret, it's just my "I'm not in charge so don't ask me to do anything" identity!

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Friday, 18 July 2003 13:32 (twenty-one years ago) link

I think you should revert to Tom for everyday purposes and call yourself Charles if you ever want to be in charge again.

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 18 July 2003 13:35 (twenty-one years ago) link

I love you, Nick Dastoor.

Ally (mlescaut), Friday, 18 July 2003 13:36 (twenty-one years ago) link

(anyway I just felt like a jerkoff, I know it's not a big secret BUT neither are several psuedonyms around here but if I went about doing that to them they'd kill me with guns)

Ally (mlescaut), Friday, 18 July 2003 13:37 (twenty-one years ago) link

i am changing my name to pika pika :(

pika pika (mark s), Friday, 18 July 2003 13:38 (twenty-one years ago) link

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 18 July 2003 13:40 (twenty-one years ago) link

Is this better?

Duran Duran (kate), Friday, 18 July 2003 13:43 (twenty-one years ago) link

Have we all gone mentalist then?

raus raus! fila fila! (mlescaut), Friday, 18 July 2003 13:44 (twenty-one years ago) link

Sorry to talk shop but...
Can someone please tell me if it's possible to post a pic from an email in a hotmail account. I have done it twice now & you can see it for a bit then it seems to disappear, wtf?

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Friday, 18 July 2003 13:46 (twenty-one years ago) link

Hurrah!

Knicker Knicker (nickdastoor), Friday, 18 July 2003 13:46 (twenty-one years ago) link

Remember Little Caeser's?

Pizza Pizza (Dan Perry), Friday, 18 July 2003 13:47 (twenty-one years ago) link

I was going to post that, you bastard Perry.

Temper Temper (Nicole), Friday, 18 July 2003 13:48 (twenty-one years ago) link

It doesn't work linking images from your hotmail account, because you need to be logged in to hotmail (and you don't want to give us your password, trust me!) to see it. What happens is, you view it in your inbox, you post it here, while the image is still in your webcache, you see it online (even though we don't, because we were never in your inbox) and when it drops out of your webcache, you can no longer see it.

kate (kate), Friday, 18 July 2003 13:48 (twenty-one years ago) link

PP, hotmail probably retitles the urls of attached pics as your mailbox updates, so it's not a good way to post a pic. Have to get some webspace I think. Do you have a home ISP that gives you any?

Knicker Knicker (nickdastoor), Friday, 18 July 2003 13:48 (twenty-one years ago) link

Oh yeah - what Kate said too. Duh.

Knicker Knicker (nickdastoor), Friday, 18 July 2003 13:49 (twenty-one years ago) link

i am feeling lame today

pika^2 (mark s), Friday, 18 July 2003 13:49 (twenty-one years ago) link

I will put forth my normal offer to house pictures for people if they cannot.

raus raus! fila fila! (mlescaut), Friday, 18 July 2003 13:50 (twenty-one years ago) link

Im sorry kate, but I had to do it.

Taylor Taylor (Mr Noodles), Friday, 18 July 2003 13:55 (twenty-one years ago) link

It's a real catch-22, isn't it?

Major Major (Dan Perry), Friday, 18 July 2003 13:58 (twenty-one years ago) link

Bucking the trend in a Kim Possible style.

Senoir Senoir Senoir (Mr Noodles), Friday, 18 July 2003 14:03 (twenty-one years ago) link

I think I might adopt this one permanently

Rikki Tikki Tavi (RickyT), Friday, 18 July 2003 14:05 (twenty-one years ago) link

Sen-wah!

Yapple Dapple! (Dan Perry), Friday, 18 July 2003 14:05 (twenty-one years ago) link

Thanx Nick, I used the boy's site. I am not totally down with all of this you know, I'm still learning!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Friday, 18 July 2003 14:07 (twenty-one years ago) link

a great way to get some free image hosting is start a yahoo group. you have to make sure to set it up as a public group

ron (ron), Friday, 18 July 2003 14:09 (twenty-one years ago) link

there is already an ilx yahoo group

Pizza Pizza (dali), Friday, 18 July 2003 14:16 (twenty-one years ago) link

Yes but ron, does it allow remotely embedded links to pictures? Yahoo Geocities doesn't.

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 18 July 2003 14:46 (twenty-one years ago) link

Can someone explain what happened to the search feature, and if the old options are going to come back? ILX is so huge now it'd be nice if it had some more choices for filtering content, and search worked well for this, though I suppose if it was slowing the server down too much it might be worthwhile to look into other options. Hope that doesn't sound ungrateful; I know it's free and lots of people have put a lot of effort in and all that.

chester (synkro), Friday, 18 July 2003 20:05 (twenty-one years ago) link

The search function was unfortunately causing some temporary shutdowns of ILX, as you noted, so we're considering changes/upgrades to the server. Fear not, it will return!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 18 July 2003 20:49 (twenty-one years ago) link

Thanks Ned, I just saw Graham's explanation on the other thread too.

My point here really is that I've found the keyword + search-after-this-day or before-this-day features more useful than the new answers page, and wanted to make sure the big lizards knew people appreciated their efforts.

chester (synkro), Friday, 18 July 2003 21:01 (twenty-one years ago) link

could someone kind please eliminate my email address from the thread about "any SF-area ILXors wanna do a favor for their old pal Neudonym?"

that would be very nice. I'd say ditch the thread entirely but who cares really. plus I want gygax to read my thank you.

Neudonym, Saturday, 19 July 2003 00:39 (twenty-one years ago) link

done.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Saturday, 19 July 2003 00:42 (twenty-one years ago) link

apologies, it's msn groups i'm thinking of :(
you can post them elsewhere as long as you set up the group as public.

ron (ron), Saturday, 19 July 2003 00:48 (twenty-one years ago) link

you have to use their built-in upload feature rather than doing the ftp route, but other than that it seems to work ok. one small annoyance is that the urls of the pics are insanely long strings of gobbledygook
