yeah if i could get it to work (it's not camino compatible) the appeal would be that - twitter's just about reached the point that fb did a while back, where it's not as much fun because "everyone" is on it

they don't know each other and are kind of polar opposites tbh

Realizing a work person was following me on twitter (despite my name never having been on it) was the final straw

Can't you just make your Twitter private and kick that person off?

Can't be arsed with Google +. If it wasn't for the events page I'd have canned Facebook ages ago.

Matt DC, Friday, 5 August 2011 13:06 (fourteen years ago)

twitter's just about reached the point that fb did a while back, where it's not as much fun because "everyone" is on it

But "everyone" being on it was why people went mad for Facebook in the first place - like it suddenly seemed to be full of people who weren't anywhere else on the internet. But the novelty of that wore off pretty quickly. I don't want to have conversations on Facebook because I don't really like the idea of someone I went to school with chipping in on a discussion of eg politics with some rabid and inane right-wing viewpoint i'd been previously unaware of.

Dunno, FB was better when it was all on one page and they hadn't overhauled the status updates to make it more like Twitter (and less navigable in the process).

Dude yr browser is clearly barely fit for purposes, you should just bin it.

Google+ circles makes it really easy to avoid that (as does using Facebook lists, probably, haven't tried)

a million anons (onimo), Friday, 5 August 2011 13:21 (fourteen years ago)

I did a lot of picking and choosing over which people from school I would add to FB, and I stuck to the rule 'would appear in public with them still' when making my choices. My page is blissfully free of right-wing morons jumping into threads as a result.

i don't have any choice! chrome doesn't work on my mac version and firefox is the worst piece of shit ever.

safari?

though new-twitter is a pain in the arse on my 10.4-running powerbook too - marginally better in firefox than safari, but still pretty rubbish.

Hello lex pretend, I would like to introduce you to Internet Explorer. We are not allowed to install other browsers on our work machines and all day I am so thankful for the very existence of Firefox. It isn't perfect, but goddamn there is so much worse out there.

jon /via/ chi 2.0, Friday, 5 August 2011 14:05 (fourteen years ago)

haw i'm on IE on an office computer atm.

i can't remember why i don't like safari but i've never thought of it as a real option.

the escalating sadness at Michael Winner's decision to leave Britain while ignoring his own tweets saying that he's not is a new high for this medium.

Sir Chips Keswick (Merdeyeux), Thursday, 11 August 2011 18:23 (fourteen years ago)

i'm still getting used to #newtwitter. when i have a random person's tweet on my timeline, i assume it's been retweeted by somebody i'm following - how do i tell who this is?

tine nic (k3vin k.), Monday, 15 August 2011 16:52 (fourteen years ago)

somewhere on the tweet it tells you "retweeted by [user]" iirc

(markers) (markers) (markers) (markers) (markers), Monday, 15 August 2011 16:53 (fourteen years ago)

i think

(markers) (markers) (markers) (markers) (markers), Monday, 15 August 2011 16:53 (fourteen years ago)

it used to on old twitter, but i can't find it on #newtwitter

tine nic (k3vin k.), Monday, 15 August 2011 16:58 (fourteen years ago)

alright, say bob smith's retweeting jim smith -- this is what it looks like:

jimsmith Jim Smith [symbol] by bobsmith

the "by [username]" is who's doing the retweeting

(markers) (markers) (markers) (markers) (markers), Monday, 15 August 2011 17:05 (fourteen years ago)

it's right next to the retweeted person's name

I give Twitter approx 3 more years to age itself into social irrelevance.

ive heard talk that twitter is inserting tweets it thinks 'you might find interesting' into ones timeline, cant recall the details tho

ice cr?m, Monday, 15 August 2011 17:44 (fourteen years ago)

i haven't heard that

(markers) (markers) (markers) (markers) (markers), Monday, 15 August 2011 17:45 (fourteen years ago)

yes i bought the subscription service. its like pandora for tweets

 (gr8080), Monday, 15 August 2011 21:40 (fourteen years ago)

Finally, I got round to creating a private list for my essential tweeters, i.e. the ones where I don't want to miss a single tweet. Having done that, I've opened the floodgates on my main stream, doubling the number of people I follow in one fell swoop. So the private list is now my main access point, and I can just dip my toe into the main stream whenever I feel like it. This is working out so much better.

mike t-diva, Tuesday, 16 August 2011 09:19 (fourteen years ago)

I've always thought that that kind of thing would be an excellent way of operating, but have not going round to creating such a list.

just call me brian (krakow), Tuesday, 16 August 2011 10:33 (fourteen years ago)

it's very, very useful

and you can move people on and off the private list depending on how much you feel like seeing their stuff at any given point, and no one can see

lex pretend, Tuesday, 16 August 2011 10:42 (fourteen years ago)

Yes, perhaps that's the best bit of all: nobody can see whether they're on the private list, so that puts an end to most follow/unfollow politics.

mike t-diva, Tuesday, 16 August 2011 11:11 (fourteen years ago)

Haha I was just thinking I'd use it to dishonestly unfollow people.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 16 August 2011 11:25 (fourteen years ago)

Man, when I want to unfollow someone, I usually want to do it with giant smashing fists of blocking. What's the point of doing an unfollow if the unfollowed dolt doesn't know about it?

^^^^^only slightly tongue in cheek

Aphex Twin … in my vagina? (Karen D. Tregaskin), Tuesday, 16 August 2011 11:31 (fourteen years ago)

Being the unfollowed dolt can really hurt.

just call me brian (krakow), Tuesday, 16 August 2011 11:40 (fourteen years ago)

There's someone on Twitter who, in the wake of the riots, has been unfollowing everyone who expresses a different-but-relatively-mainstream view to hers by basically going 'UNFOLLOW, CUNTS!' which is kinda OTT.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 16 August 2011 11:42 (fourteen years ago)

Trust me, I know. That's why I save it only for ppl who really piss me off.

x-post you don't actually follow me, DC, how did you know? ;-)

Aphex Twin … in my vagina? (Karen D. Tregaskin), Tuesday, 16 August 2011 11:43 (fourteen years ago)

There's really something about Twitter that turns me into an angry 8th grader, relational violence and all that. Makes me actually quite relieved that I never got into Facebook, like a whole nother level of passive aggression I don't want to have to trigger in myself or deal with in others.

actually thinking about all this has made me really quite unhappy now. Not a good can of worms to have opened up.

Aphex Twin … in my vagina? (Karen D. Tregaskin), Tuesday, 16 August 2011 11:51 (fourteen years ago)

it's odd how you can mull over unfollowing someone for a while, and every time they tweet they cross your mind, and then after you do it's like you forget they exist. tempting to take it too personally when you get unfollowed but really - apart from when i find that someone i actually know irl has unfollowed me, which i consider RUDE - the only times it's annoying are when people unfollow me after i tweet about things i love. uhhh if you don't want to see tweets about tennis or r&b why the FUCK follow me in the first place.

of course it could just be cuz i tweet quite a lot - when i unfollow it's b/c someone just doesn't stop tweeting ever, rather than people who perhaps aren't as interesting but tweet much less regularly. (obv there are v prolific tweeters i still follow but you have to be v much worth it for this to be the case)

lex pretend, Tuesday, 16 August 2011 12:29 (fourteen years ago)

couple of friends have private and public twitters - would be tempted but no way would i keep from making mistakes there
