also i was talking to an armenian guy recently and i told him i lived in thai town, to which he responded: "don't you mean little armenia?"

is there some inter-neighborhood tension there?

ohhh yeah

― the ramen corner (get bent), Monday, 15 August 2011 21:39 (fifteen years ago)

There’s a major street called Western that’s on the Eastside of Los Angeles, which you should never confuse with East Los Angeles, because East Los Angeles is also a separate city, to the east of Downtown Los Angeles.

east los angeles is not a city... it's unincorporated l.a. county, except for boyle heights, which is a neighborhood in los angeles.

― the ramen corner (get bent), Monday, 15 August 2011 21:43 (fifteen years ago)

someone sent me this link when i moved here: the communities within the *city* of los angeles. i.e., not including other cities in the county, like santa monica, beverly hills, etc.

http://www.laalmanac.com/LA/lamap3.htm

― the ramen corner (get bent), Monday, 15 August 2011 21:52 (fifteen years ago)

is there a map somewhere of all the blue signs?

― max, Monday, 15 August 2011 23:40 (fifteen years ago)

"northeast los angeles" pshaw

― max, Monday, 15 August 2011 23:41 (fifteen years ago)

that's just the "community planning areas," so all the neighborhoods and blue-sign places would be lumped in with that.

― the widening gyre (remy bean), Tuesday, 16 August 2011 00:03 (fifteen years ago)

Hi there!

― Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 16 August 2011 02:46 (fifteen years ago)

I am crazy missing LA this past month. I haven't had a good burrito or kimchee worth mentioning in a full calendar year.

― the widening gyre (remy bean), Tuesday, 16 August 2011 02:55 (fifteen years ago)

That would be agony and a half, I sympathize.

― Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 16 August 2011 03:11 (fifteen years ago)

looking for work in LA has been a bitch and trying to do this from here on the east coast surely hasn’t helped. i may never make it back !!

― Aerosol, Tuesday, 16 August 2011 13:54 (fifteen years ago)

Were we still up for buying this place?

That statue represents myself and things that I've had to defeat in my life. So it wasn't like I was just this wacky guy who wanted 20 penises on his lawn. That's not the way I roll.... Unfortunately, the neighbors and other people never took the time to wonder if there was a reason....

― Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 16 August 2011 16:00 (fifteen years ago)

i think at the very least we should have a 'Getting Back to My Me' book club

― clams cassingle (donna rouge), Tuesday, 16 August 2011 16:41 (fifteen years ago)

Oh hey guys PS, I'm going to Venice on Thurs. Is there anything must-see in particular or should I just go bask in it all?

― Parker Posey Can't Pose (Stevie D(eux)), Tuesday, 16 August 2011 17:26 (fifteen years ago)

it's not QUITE venice but if you're that far west you should go to the museum of jurassic technology!

― clams cassingle (donna rouge), Tuesday, 16 August 2011 17:29 (fifteen years ago)

Yes

― A41 (admrl), Tuesday, 16 August 2011 17:41 (fifteen years ago)

culver city has a cool little art scene... good for afternoon gallery-hopping.

http://www.ccgalleryguide.com/

as for venice, i don't know it that well. the beach is good for pretending you're in the three's company opening credits, but as beaches go, i prefer marina del rey.

― the ramen corner (get bent), Tuesday, 16 August 2011 17:50 (fifteen years ago)

Stick around a month and you can come to my screening series in Culver City, it will be fun

― A41 (admrl), Tuesday, 16 August 2011 17:56 (fifteen years ago)

do tell!

― clams cassingle (donna rouge), Tuesday, 16 August 2011 17:56 (fifteen years ago)

anyone following the development of the grocery strike? so grossed out by this detail from the LAT yesterday:

The retailers are fighting back. This week, Albertsons and Vons began taking applications for people willing to cross a picket line and work during a strike.

On Wednesday, customers walking through the front door of the Albertsons store at West 39th Street and Crenshaw Boulevard in Los Angeles were greeted with a sign offering $10- to $13-an-hour jobs “for temporary replacement associates due to a potential labor dispute at our store.”

http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/money_co/2011/08/grocery-labor-union-strike-vote-jobs.html

― clams cassingle (donna rouge), Thursday, 18 August 2011 23:31 (fifteen years ago)

i saw a "help wanted during grocery strike" sign outside vons a few days ago. good luck, potential scabs.

― chavo pendergrass (get bent), Friday, 19 August 2011 00:05 (fifteen years ago)

I heard a radio ad by the unions that was touting some poll saying 60+% of californians wouldnt cross a picket line.. bullshit. They say that now when they dont exist.. Give them like a week once the strike goes down.

― strongly recommend. unless you're a bitch (mayor jingleberries), Friday, 19 August 2011 00:11 (fifteen years ago)

i hope (the fervently anti-union) target doesn't get an uptick in sales because of this.

― chavo pendergrass (get bent), Friday, 19 August 2011 22:46 (fifteen years ago)

i mean, i shop at target for their vast selection of cheap crap, but i haven't taken advantage of their grocery section. i really need to stop supporting these dipshits.

― chavo pendergrass (get bent), Friday, 19 August 2011 22:48 (fifteen years ago)

Trader Joe's employees ALWAYS seem really happy, despite the fact that many of them are comfortably middle-aged and scanning my Weetabix for a living, why is that??

― Jung Danjah (admrl), Friday, 19 August 2011 22:54 (fifteen years ago)

Has anyone been in the underground tunnels:

― just1n3, Saturday, 20 August 2011 01:52 (fifteen years ago)

Really, are they hiring?

― Lophar Andreusz DeLeone (admrl), Saturday, 20 August 2011 03:26 (fifteen years ago)

@cinefamilyThe great Kel Mitchell ( @iamkelmitchell ) will be here in person for our screening of GOOD BURGER. Sept 4th. Best BBQ / screening ever.

― matthew lesko.... in my ? (get bent), Tuesday, 23 August 2011 19:03 (fifteen years ago)

Dammit and I would be out of town that weekend.

― Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 23 August 2011 19:06 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah that seems like a shame. I have guests coming this weekend and wanted to take them. The city's getting pretty draconian recently, for example they gave ME a speeding ticket yesterday! in Chinatown, of all places.

OK so who knows kid/baby-friendly things in LA? I was thinking Travel Town, LACMA, Grand Central Market (it's loud), Angel's Flight. Probably won't do the beach

― Pizzataco Five (admrl), Wednesday, 24 August 2011 20:30 (fifteen years ago)

Meantime for anyone up for OC:

http://www.ocfoodiefest.com/

At Angels Stadium as well, meaning you could take Amtrak/Metrolink down and it'll be right there off the Anaheim stop.

― Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 24 August 2011 20:32 (fifteen years ago)

Children's Museum in Pasadena?

xp

― nickn, Wednesday, 24 August 2011 20:33 (fifteen years ago)

Looks good, actually we are talking about a one year-old so maybe he just needs somewhere loud.

― Pizzataco Five (admrl), Wednesday, 24 August 2011 20:36 (fifteen years ago)

Just take him to a movie like every other parent in the city.

― Midnight Maniac (J3ff T.), Wednesday, 24 August 2011 20:41 (fifteen years ago)

Toys R Us then.

― nickn, Wednesday, 24 August 2011 20:41 (fifteen years ago)

Jay Babcock
Sunset Junction hasn't been good for "the community" or the arts for many years. Good riddance.
