Yeah that seems like a shame. I have guests coming this weekend and wanted to take them. The city's getting pretty draconian recently, for example they gave ME a speeding ticket yesterday! in Chinatown, of all places.

OK so who knows kid/baby-friendly things in LA? I was thinking Travel Town, LACMA, Grand Central Market (it's loud), Angel's Flight. Probably won't do the beach

Meantime for anyone up for OC:

At Angels Stadium as well, meaning you could take Amtrak/Metrolink down and it'll be right there off the Anaheim stop.

Looks good, actually we are talking about a one year-old so maybe he just needs somewhere loud.

Pizzataco Five (admrl), Wednesday, 24 August 2011 20:36 (thirteen years ago) link

Just take him to a movie like every other parent in the city.

Sunset Junction hasn't been good for "the community" or the arts for many years. Good riddance.

I like it (and I can literally walk there) but their coffee has cinamon in it, which is an acquired taste

Can anyone show me a good coffee place in the chinatown/Lincoln Heights area?

http://www.cafedecamacho.com/ on Olvera St.
http://cafeintheheights.webs.com/ on Broadway in Lincoln Heights

Stockhausen's Ekranoplan Quartet (Elvis Telecom), Thursday, 25 August 2011 00:08 (thirteen years ago) link

Cool! Yeah I will check out the latter. I basically work equidistant from each, but Broadway parking wins every time.

There is also this place but the coffee is kinda sweet and the service is slow (but very nice). Baked goods smell great, though: http://www.labaking.com/

Travel town is great. there's also a carousel in Griffith Park near the zoo and travel town. Olvera Street is pretty fun environment for a 1 year old too. lots of tschotskes, music, etc.

Roffle:

"I feel like I'm gonna cry," Dale said happily, pointing to 20 or so people strumming ukuleles on the sidewalk. "Do you see the ukulele orchestra? They're playing Justin Bieber! It's just so, so Silver Lake."

"Like, baby, baby, baby, oh!," orchestra members sang as children danced and tattooed couples snapped pictures. "Like baby, baby, baby, no."

i'm going to this, at EPFC tonight (tho i can't stay the whole time):

Tuesday, August 30 – HAPPY BIRTHDAY GEORGE AND MIKE KUCHAR: AN EPFC VIDEO SLEEPOVER – 8PM Come celebrate George & Mike Kuchar’s birthday with an all-night pot luck pajama party at the Echo Park Film Center. Works by George and Mike will be screened until the wee hours of the morning, with a midnight toast to honor their birthday (August 31). Come dressed to act as your favorite faded starlet, and bring some B-movie props, as impromptu videotaping is liable to occur throughout the evening. A highlight of the event will be a selection of rarely screened works made with students from the San Francisco Art Institute, as well as the documentary The Smutty Professor, which chronicles the spring 2000 SFAI class AC/DC Psychotronic Teleplays as they make Planet of the Vamps. Former students are encouraged to bring their class’ project to screen!

Felt it in Glendale (on the 2nd floor of office building) - just enough to go "hey, it's an earthquake"

Stockhausen's Ekranoplan Quartet (Elvis Telecom), Thursday, 1 September 2011 23:55 (thirteen years ago) link

felt nothing out in simi valley (first floor of office building), but was pretty wrapped up in something around that time.

the wheelie king (wk), Tuesday, 13 September 2011 03:14 (thirteen years ago) link

yes, for $1.50, with no traffic.

I would love to take that thing from SM to downtown on the weekend, but what's it going to take, an hour? for what is an easy 30 minute shot straight down the 10? I mean, I'm excited about it, just shocked by how slow it's going to be.

What private Stonecutters Secret Society superhighway tunnel are you taking where downtown to SM on the 10 takes 30 minutes? Summer traffic out that way feels like it's heavier than usual.

i had dinner tonight at california canteen, a place i've passed by a hundred times but never thought twice about until someone recommended it. the name is pretty banal, but the food's good -- frenchy mediterranean bistro stuff -- and the vibe is secluded and not "sceney." they passed my "roast chicken" test, so i'm satisfied.
