last night (qv the big brother thread) i realised he becomes funny when you're drunk.

i admire his skinniness.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Thursday, 15 June 2006 22:06 (eighteen years ago) link

I am torn between thinking he's very funny and thinking he's an irritating nob end. He's probably both.

chap who would dare to be a nerd, not a geek (chap), Thursday, 15 June 2006 22:07 (eighteen years ago) link

hes still funny, it just harder to laugh at someone when theyre looking so pretty (and trying too hard to look pretty)

titchyschneider (titchyschneider), Thursday, 15 June 2006 22:08 (eighteen years ago) link

i feel the opposite way from titchyschneider. he used to annoy me but now he's really being himself (rather than "undergoing a makeover") i can't get enough of him. he makes me LOL night after night.

jed_ (jed), Thursday, 15 June 2006 22:09 (eighteen years ago) link

oh he still makes me LOL, but he does look ridiculous

titchyschneider (titchyschneider), Thursday, 15 June 2006 22:12 (eighteen years ago) link

he looks good!(...maybe) i think that in his previous years on BBBM he was a bit stifled & he's really relaxed into his role this year. this dandified look, rather than being a makeover, is him actually just being himself.

jed_ (jed), Thursday, 15 June 2006 22:17 (eighteen years ago) link

Isn't he just a failed stand-up/junkie who reinvented himself by eating a thesaurus?

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 15 June 2006 22:17 (eighteen years ago) link

"failed...junkie" hmmmm

just? it sounds like quite an achievement to me.

I think he's great. such an obvious pillhead

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 15 June 2006 22:23 (eighteen years ago) link

if only he could have kept to a limited vocab and been a successful drug addict.

michael wells (michael w.), Thursday, 15 June 2006 22:23 (eighteen years ago) link

This is kinda why I hate him:

I thought that article was ok.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 15 June 2006 22:40 (eighteen years ago) link

it would prob have come across better in his artful-dodgery raffish patter.

titchyschneider (titchyschneider), Thursday, 15 June 2006 22:50 (eighteen years ago) link

yes, exactly. kinda wank, too.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Thursday, 15 June 2006 22:59 (eighteen years ago) link

never used to find him funny, but something seems to have clicked this year; Big Mouth is more entertaining that the BB main show for this reason.

teh_kit has 21 friends (g-kit), Friday, 16 June 2006 07:01 (eighteen years ago) link

Funny watching him on Jonathan Ross as you could see the fear in Ross's eyes as the future spreadeagled himself before him. He tried to tame him but it was like fighting a jellyfish, too slippery, too fast, too clever.

I love the way he drops arcane words into his speech and he's the only person I've heard who's used the crack is moreish gag and made it work.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Friday, 16 June 2006 07:08 (eighteen years ago) link

i used to hate him but can't remember why -- thought he was just generic e4 presenter-guy, i suppose -- but bbbm is brilliant this year.

unfortunately saying '...the SWINE' has crept into my stock of lame tv-derived catchphrases.

example of brilliance: on the caption competition, the screen came up and instead of a caption it just said "winning caption". brand said it was a conceptual ploy a la derrida (or words to funnier effect). that's quick thinking, for a crackhead.

Seriously, Try Punching This Guy in the Face and See What Happens (Enrique), Friday, 16 June 2006 07:18 (eighteen years ago) link

He seems designed to irritate, but he's made me laff out loud at least twice this year which is a fair achievement. So I v. grudgingly like him. His patter/patois is irresistably watchable, full of high-speed twisted malapropisms and Uriah Heep tics, he's at least doing something semi-original within the current funnee presenters milieu.

My little brother helps run a comedy club in London, and he has met le Brand and says he is lovely, and that telly people like him because he is totally professional. If you shout in his earpiece that he needs to make shit up for the next two minutes, he'll do it. It seems like a strange skill in the real world, but is highly prized in tellyland.

Il mio nome e' Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 16 June 2006 08:17 (eighteen years ago) link

Over exposed - like every single good thing these days. He's trying to keep what was essentially a stand up act going through hours of telly. Is there anyone in the whole wide world who could do that? and ITV want him for the new J Ross or something so that's the end of him. Who's next?

Ned T.Rifle (nedtrifle), Friday, 16 June 2006 08:24 (eighteen years ago) link

Brand will never be as good as he was when we was running around Homelands/Creamfields etc. going up to random punters with a mic in order to demonstrate that he was even more loved up than they were, on MTV's Dancefloor Chart.

He needs to become the new presenter of a revived Blankety Blank on BBC prime time.

russell re-branding himself as a philosopher guru reminds me a bit of neil strauss trying to make the pivot into positive lifestyle influencer after years of being a rancid detriment to society. it's all just a grift, and they still try to trade in on their bad-boy image as giving them bonafides of a different sort, it makes them a veteran of certain wars, allows them to reflect upon their behaviors as if they're at a complete remove while enjoying still having the image of people who have had those experiences.

Makes me sick to know that the only way someone like this ever sees any legal repercussions for his behaviour is if one of his victims is brave enough to step forward and press charges, knowing in turn that he'll set the hounds of hell onto them and probably get off with a slap on the wrist anyway because the judicial profession is stuck in the 18th century when it comes to sexual assault.

Just had to get that off my chest. See also: pretty much every other piece of shit that's been outed as a sex offender in the last few years.

Daniel_Rf, Tuesday, 15 October 2024 18:44 (one month ago) link

Not only the judicial profession. People say they stand against abusive men until they have to have uncomfortable conversations. The reason your Brands and your Diddys and whoever else is allowed to thrive is not because they are too big and too powerful to fail, it's because people believed they are too big and too powerful to fail because nobody spoke out and said what needed to be said.

In which a bunch of posho nimbys object to Brand buying up a disused and probably derelict pub in their village and turning it into a TV studio / Epstein Island hybrid.

“He talked about making it into a vegan restaurant, which didn’t go down too well around here,” said David Orpwood, a retired farmer. “When he goes, we’ll still be here. He’s going to bugger up the pub and we’ll be left with nothing.”

I love an argument where you despise everyone involved, makes it easy to know which side you're on.
