does anyone actually make money from affiliate-SEO-link-baiting whatever stuff? and if so, who do they make the money from? where does this SEO money come from?

ponzi-style affiliate link selling and weirdo SEO shit underneath a veneer of "awesomeness"
No yeah I spotted that with all those fake wordpress blogs someone posted and the guy with his business "expanding and contratcing" and etc - its just weird cybergrifting innit. It is fascinating that there is so much of this - surely the centre cannot hold?

― call all destroyer, Friday, 3 February 2012 02:49 (twelve years ago) link
The money comes in from the linkbait sites hosting AdWords ads or Amazon affiliate links or some other such crap that pays per click. The scammer gets juice through SEO on a bunch of interconnected spam sites and tries to get up in the rankings for some profitable google search or other, their sites get clicked on in Google searches, people come to the site, inevitably click an ad, and the scammer makes a nickel.
The WP Mage fellow up at the top is the most obvious example of the SEO shit itt.

kept on noticing how much the cute girl in the above vid was talking about working with "leaders" or "really smart people" over and over (and obv how awesomeness fest is invite only)--like i gather this is designed to *look* like it appeals to management types who are really striving (tho probably actually takes advantage of ppl who are a lot more desperate). like if ron donald worked for an internet marketing company.

what silby said, and what i think is the most fascinating is the guy selling a $1500 package to create websites that i think just sell that same package and give you an affiliate cut

― Mordy, Friday, 3 February 2012 02:57 (twelve years ago) link
yeah on further investigation, WP Mage is not selling you a way to build up an SEO linkbait network, he's selling you a way to become an affiliate marketer for WP Mage. Which is slightly different! More pyramid schemey.

i think BH Ideas/megacycles are artfully clowning the way a lot of this plays out on social networking sites and how depressing it gets the more it trickles down.

no, for sure that was my question. but all the people he's interacting with who are also looking to connect -- are they these people? more desperate versions of these people? like, there's a hierarchy, right? with the attractive looking people at the well-designed website mindvalley on top and BH connects kinda working around the dregs at the bottom?

saw a really amazing doco on tv a couple of years ago called 'beyond our ken', about an aussie self-help org called kenja. they looked pretty innocuous on the surface - their technique was basically just one-on-one meditation - but it slowly unwrapped the seedier stuff like unstable people getting kicked from the group disappearing, and the leader getting charged with sexual assault against female group members (including teen girls). it peaks with him snapping out of charming leader type into volcanic rage at the filmmaker for ten minutes - it's incredible to watch. the guy shot himself ten days before the doco's premiere at the melb film festival. maybe more actual cult material than the rest of this thread but def worth seeing.

i feel like the human mind is complex and can sustain two seemingly contradictory beliefs at once, or perhaps in alternation, while repressing the cognitive dissonance. so maybe some of these folks _both_ understand they are ripping people off _and_ believe they are helping people.
