the idea of working out w/other ppl is weirder than quantum jumping to me

RYVITA® (Lamp), Saturday, 4 February 2012 01:52 (twelve years ago) link

p90x is like the do-it-at-home call-this-900-number version of crossfit. it's a "program", crossfit is a "brand" with gym affiliates and certified trainers.

lil kink (Matt P), Saturday, 4 February 2012 01:52 (twelve years ago) link

i maybe give px90 the slight edge cause they employ the incredible phrase muscle confusion

lag∞n, Saturday, 4 February 2012 01:53 (twelve years ago) link

just to be clear itt crossfit gets culty about eatin' paleo and whatnot but is not actually a cult.

lag∞n, Saturday, 4 February 2012 01:57 (twelve years ago) link

i paid for a personal trainer for a few months and i felt as ashamed w/ myself for paying someone to make me exercise as i prob would attending a quantum jumping seminar, but damn it if i wasn't in better shape than i'd been in years :\

⚓ (gr8080), Saturday, 4 February 2012 02:05 (twelve years ago) link

I don't think there's anything weirder about having a personal trainer than having a shrink, nobody's got perfect inner drive for achieving their fitness goals or whatever and if paying someone to help you helps, why not

iatee, Saturday, 4 February 2012 02:09 (twelve years ago) link

by nobody I mean nobody on ilx

iatee, Saturday, 4 February 2012 02:10 (twelve years ago) link

hmmmmm

RYVITA® (Lamp), Saturday, 4 February 2012 02:11 (twelve years ago) link

a personal trainer is good if you're willing/able to go at their pace -- if they're in tremendously great shape, they might forget that you need to go a little slower for a while. i saw a trainer berating a young woman on the treadmill, being all "go faster! faster!" and the woman was like "this is as fast as i go, dude." jillian michaels style trainers = DUD.

I was thinking my work fitness center had a p90x thing but maybe it is another organized class. Trx or something? Straps hanging from ceiling.

mh, Saturday, 4 February 2012 02:40 (twelve years ago) link

p90x is basically a branded "circuit training" which lots of gyms offer

anyway this is boring lets get back to these maniacs:

Yeah that's TRX. Great stuff imo. Almost no end to what you can do with those things.

she sounds like a undergraduate sophomore giving a mock-up "business pitch" in an introductory marketing class.

i mean it sounds like she read a marketing textbook the night before and basically repeated it verbatim, spending about 5 minutes brainstorming re. the actual "product" they are supposedly selling.

who is impressed with this stuff?

flesh, the devil, and a wolf (wolf) (amateurist), Saturday, 4 February 2012 04:38 (twelve years ago) link

giving her presentation barefoot was a nice touch though.

flesh, the devil, and a wolf (wolf) (amateurist), Saturday, 4 February 2012 04:39 (twelve years ago) link

also how many times can you really take something "to the next level" before you run out of levels?

flesh, the devil, and a wolf (wolf) (amateurist), Saturday, 4 February 2012 04:41 (twelve years ago) link

how earnestly everyone is listening to her on their bean bags laptops at the ready is kinda heartbreaking

Okay I just spent about an hour reading through this thread. Desperately stifling laughter at many points to avoid waking my girlfriend. I've just always been simultaneously amused and confused by the overall appeal of these kind of things, no matter the context. So many striving, ridiculous idiotic shitheads.

Also, having seen the thread title for these past couple of days but not read the thread, learning that Awesomeness Fest was the actual name of the thing did my brain in from the start.

This thread went too fast for me in the past 24 hours but I really like it so anyone wanna sum up w/ the highlights?

Maybe off topic, but did anyone else's high school bring in motivational speakers? I would guess they did. My high school in Michigan had an loooong assembly with this woman who really did a number on us.

It was a small school - around 200-300 students? - and for a while we'd had a lot of personality conflicts and jealousy and beefs as well as a big burn-out population, and the administration wanted to help.

Over about 4 hours she broke us down and united us. Honestly it was amazing how she made almost every student cry (maybe not "almost every" but a huge majority for sure) and stand up in front of the auditorium and say either a) How sorry they were for being horrible alpha bullies or b) How much they were humans w/ feelings and how the alphas and the losers could be friends.

I did not fall for it (really, not revisionist) b/c I knew that in a week the love would wear off. The other dissenter was a total weasely dick who afterward mocked other students by fake sobbing in their faces.

It was a lot of bullshit but it was a glorious day to see the dick jocks and vicious cool girls and violent burn-outs all openly sob and hug the betas, and I am still kind of in awe of her ability to manipulate people.
