Yeah, I think some people are just wired to find this sort of peoplewatching interesting, and it can get a little scary if you get too close. I was checking in with her to tell her about Vishen and the gang, but also to make sure that her radar was still functioning. She has gotten herself into a bit of a pickle before, and was doing a lot of work for free, and it was getting in the way of her relationships with other people (namely me).

I think it's interesting to vicariously experience these different states and mindsets in other people ... it's like exploration, satisfies a kind-of curiosity. Problem is actually getting too deep with it which is more dangerous with social stuff.
― Spectrum, Monday, 6 February 2012 16:27 (twelve years ago) link
i enjoy people watching, but a far as loons like these the internet is abt as close as im confortable getting, theres a big diff between watching and interacting, actually relating to these fools would be p depressing imho
― lag∞n, Monday, 6 February 2012 16:30 (twelve years ago) link
Yeah, that's some dark territory to get into. Like imagining how a crazy person thinks ... it's really weird and unsettling.
― Spectrum, Monday, 6 February 2012 16:33 (twelve years ago) link
Yeah, my mom is a bit of a danger-seeker/tourist, I think. It's weird, but I totally get it.

Hey now! There's definitely overlap between "people who teach yoga" and "people who suck up fringe new age stuff" but correlation /= causation.

Big organized religions = "Ecclesiastical cults" officially in all of social science. So I guess maybe you're both right.
But 'cult' doesn't really mean anything like the popular definition in religious studies.
