According to Harper's Index this month, 6 of 7 jobs in the U.S. are in the service industry.

it encompasses both investment bankers and waitresses. just about anyone who doesn't grow food or work in a factory yet still gets paid money for some reason.

it's still astonishing in the big picture, we have some people who are so good at growing food that everyone else just gets to sit at desks or walk around and do things for other people all day, and somehow it works out

leaving susan b anthony and sacajawea dollars at a bar as a tip: too much?
― un® (dayo), Saturday, 9 June 2012 14:36 (twelve years ago) link
The only complaint I've ever heard is when you give them a handful of coins while ordering a drink at a busy bar. Otherwise, it's all legal tender.
― pplains, Saturday, 9 June 2012 14:44 (twelve years ago) link
Whenever my mom got dollar coins as waitressing tips, she would hoard them away in a sock, which I never understood at all. So if you're giving them to people like my mom, you're giving them money they'll never spend. I think it's unusual behavior, though.
― Word of Wisdom Robots (Abbbottt), Saturday, 9 June 2012 15:39 (twelve years ago) link
I pulled the whole two-dollar bill thing for awhile. I knew when I was going out, I was going to tip, and I knew that I was going to tip more than one dollar. Might as well save room in my wallet.
― pplains, Saturday, 9 June 2012 16:09 (twelve years ago) link
I picked up a bunch of dollar coins at one point for tipping and random use. May do so again, but it won't be as cool as the ones I got with Millard Fillmore on them.

also I was wondering if it's ok to just ask "what do people normally tip?" if you're paying at the front counter or whatever
― chupacabra seeds (Abbbottt), Tuesday, 26 June 2012 02:04 (twelve years ago) link
yeah it totally is. or just call ahead and ask.
for a salon service like that i'd tip 15% - 25%, but no less than $10.

i love it when people ask me that, it means i might get a tip.

http://gawker.com/5925465/family-fulfills-deceased-mans-dying-wish-purchase-a-pizza-and-give-the-server-a-500-tip
30-year-old Aaron Collins passed away last week, leaving behind one final wish for his family: To go have a pizza and leave the waiter or waitress a $500.As Aaron sadly had no money with which to fulfill his wish, the family started a website to solicit donations. After just a few days, they reached their goal and headed out to Puccini's to make Aaron's last wish come true.In the video's description, Aaron's brother Seth writes: We think he just wanted to provide a random act of kindness and generosity for someone he thought was under appreciated; the kind of thing that would make a lasting impact they would never forget. And the family's not done yet: They are still accepting donations, and say they will do this again "each time we have $500."

tip on pre or post tax figure?
always thought it was on the post-tax but noticed the other day on the bill it had a suggested amount, which was 20% of the pre-tax
― suare, Tuesday, 24 July 2012 22:20 (twelve years ago) link
tipping is a feeling
― Misc. Carnivora (Matt P), Tuesday, 24 July 2012 22:21 (twelve years ago) link
Huh, I've always gone with post-tax just because that's the big number at the bottom of the check. I guess pre-tax probably makes more sense in the abstract, but, eh, servers gotta pay tax on stuff too, I don't mind the difference. Or is there really high tax on food where you are? It seems like 15-20% of 5-10% is kind of a trivial number, compared to the price of the food.
― Doctor Casino, Tuesday, 24 July 2012 22:30 (twelve years ago) link
tipping is on pre-tax, but generally the kind of people who care aren't tipping so well anyway

Sorry to revive this.
Anyway, I buy coffee at a local coffee shop. Two bags, in which I ask them to ground for french press. Total comes in to about $42. On top of that, they give me a free coffee drink, which I usually get a latte. How much would you tip on this?
― Jeff, Wednesday, 17 October 2012 12:28 (twelve years ago) link
Hmm. I don't buy bulk coffee so I'm not sure. The grinding is something they kind of normally do, but feels a little "extra" right? My gut would say to tip something around the price of what the free drink would have cost.
― Doctor Casino, Wednesday, 17 October 2012 12:31 (twelve years ago) link
If the grinding is something they normally do for customers as a service, I don't think it needs to be tipped at all tbqh
― my father will guide me up the stairs to bed (anagram), Wednesday, 17 October 2012 12:53 (twelve years ago) link
Never apologise for reviving this thread! I love it!
Anag, wouldn't making coffee be "something they normally do for customers as a service"?
― Tim, Wednesday, 17 October 2012 12:55 (twelve years ago) link
(By which I mean, isn't a tip most often applied to things done normally as part of a service? And then an extra special big tip applied to something extra / especially good?)

― caek, Wednesday, 17 October 2012 13:16 (twelve years ago) link
I'm guessing most customers just go for whole bean, so it does feel like extra. I did $3 this morning. Will probably do $4 next time.
