Facebook put me back in touch with my oldest friend after six years when we lost touch. It has also, well, gotten me laid.
ILX has done neither of those.

a friend from high school who reconnected w/me on FB after many many years recently sent me an out-of-the-blue message asking if i ever considered going to burning man.

"uh no." several WEEKS later he responds along the lines of "gee you don't want to construct an alternative society and camp out in the desert?" hahaha that's what we do on ILX

scott steward still hasn't accepted my fbf request

facebook really thinks I should be friends with some LOL famous people, like Michael Gira and Ivo Watts Russel. I wish!

facebook was very useful for completely killing my life-long crush on a girl I loved from age 8-16. thanks facebook!

akm, Sunday, 4 March 2012 17:50 (twelve years ago) link

maybe i don't know your name! and apparently you don't know mine either! maybe you sent a request to scott steward. i'm friends with michael gira on facebook. he's always posting stuff on facebook. i never add anything to his posts. why bother.

scott seward, Sunday, 4 March 2012 18:24 (twelve years ago) link

oh and akm, i wasn't dissing you or anything! i'm just not good at remembering people's real names.

slavoj zizek was proudly in the upper reaches of my 'find friends' thing for a while, tho he seems to have disappeared. now it's all about ilx favourite frank turner.

i do kinda like looking at facebook and seeing stuff like this:

David Van Tieghem likes this.

i love a hoos, but yeah i don't need fb telling me what the dude just read

shit is getting out of hand

not sure why the nu blue is default. i not only prefer the old css.oldstyle (or whatever it was) but think it the best just aesthetically... appealing/calming and complimentary color palette, clear differentiations between tabs, nice font

I was also confused about the comments about ILX being "blue," but I've been a blueski/blueski2 user for years.

(Old.css hurts my eyes.)

The most insidious thing about Facebook to me is how it got so many people relying on it as a primary source of communication and only then started in on this "follow most of Johnny Bluejeans' posts" bullshit. I feel like half the posts people make are shuttling directly into the void, unseen by many. But at least I still get Spotify updates and indications of people having read ghe Washington Post!

mookie ;_;

That's cool, jaymc and I will hang out and eat quinoa and talk about how awesome blueski2 is.

is there a way to untag yourself from someone else's timeline post?

you can remove it from your wall but i don't think you can do anything else, maybe except unfriending them?

quit facebook the other night in a spasm of self-pity; have since cheered up but i think most of why is that i quit facebook

yeah. having checked it at the very least once a week (tho not posted nearly that often) for literally my entire adult life, this has been an interesting change.

xxposts crut - change your settings so that only friends tag you & that you get notified when they do - then you can veto if you dont wanna b tagged

but i dont think you can untag anymore?

untagging erodes the network and thins the data; it is saboteur behavior and i am reporting u for counseling crut

npr's ominous eyeball there reminds me of my least favorite 1984 cover

I think facebook has actually made me sad a lot of times and it's only just clicked that that's the case

i.e. the feeling is 'Ah, there goes Person X/Y/Z, progressively further and further away from me into the Void* ...', and that only arises from seeing many regular updates – if instead I was receiving rare letters I might instead get a feeling of 'Ah, long time no contact, how warm'. Perhaps.

*The Void = London/Magaluf/Sidney respectively

cardamon, Sunday, 2 February 2014 05:59 (ten years ago) link

do y'all stay facebook friends with your exes? there's one in particular who i talk to on the phone nearly every week but who i'm not facebook friends with. hearing from her what she's up to feels really different than just having facebook send me unsolicited reminders via the newsfeed about how our lives have gone off in different directions.

tɹi.ʃɪp (Treeship), Sunday, 2 February 2014 06:04 (ten years ago) link

maybe facebook should just change it's corporate motto to "NOTHING LASTS".
