Shoot Em Up >>>>>>>>>>>>> Smokin Aces, better set pieces, more charismatic performers, doesn't get emo at the end, etc, etc.
i ever so slightly preferred this to Children Of Men.

Both movies have great action sequences and Clive Owen protecting a baby. One tries to sell ridiculous sci-fi as haunting social commentary, the other has "Ace Of Spades."

this movie is fuckin ridiculous. and lame.
the big hit was awesome tho.

though i totally don't get if it's action or action-comedy or like meta-action-comedy or whatever

Meta action comedy is the closest. It's deliberately way way over the top, and tries for laughs (but fails) there are a number of clangingly obvious comparisons of the Giamatti/Owen rivalry to Bugs vs Fudd. I think these are supposed to make you aware of the live-action cartooniness of it all (which couldn't possibly be missed - it has everything but animated birds flying around the heads of people who get punched) and also predispose viewers to like it, since presumably everyone likes looney toons. What it did for me, though, was make me wish I'd spent my money at Vulcan renting Tex Avery shorts.

man i miss vulcan so much now that i'm further north.

This was so fucking bad. I thought it was directly comparable to Crank as well, would've preferred watching Crank again instead of this pile of shit.

The fuck?

oh god i saw this earlier this week. it is something i would expect troy duffy to make after overhearing a conversation between two film students in his crappy bar. first action scene was the best, but even during that i could tell the schtick was going to get old very, very fast. and it did. like, before the end of the scene.
crank comparisons OTM. crank had much better jumping out of planes and fighting as falling. tons of other movies had better jump down centre of stairwell scene.
i can't abide stupid shit that thinks it isn't stupid shit. at least crank is honest.

also, clive owen was wasted and paul giamatti was awful. so it loses more points there.

Just got this thru netflix. It's hilariously disposable, but I enjoyed it.
Soundtrack was ace, too.

couldn't make it past the first 5 minutes

i liked it. a lot. while i was watching it. i don't think about it much these days. it was a little less cloying than Smokin' Aces, though SA had the Make-Up on the sdtrk.

sums it up nicely. also, giamatti is awful in it.
― darraghmac, Wednesday, 12 March 2008 10:12 (sixteen years ago) link
this was really awful. adding a few self-aware jokes about how cliched action films are does not make your film a clever and insightful take on the genre

this movie pretty much sucked balls.

i just thought i remembered a few scenes from it but they were actually from that jolie movie where she can curve bullets
this was a cute bugs bunny cartoon

this was probably the worst movie i've ever seen, or at least a top-5 contender
