gigolo aunts / geraldine fibbers

(cue like half an hour wasted trying to remember-name-of / find-youtube-video for "california tuffy")

gigolo aunts were boston power pop, that bloom single was a huge local hit when i was in high school. i think they had chloe sevigny on the cover of their major label album?

was california tuffy that "oh palm trees, sway in the breeze, i'll be alone forever" song? that had a pretty good hook if i remember. dammit, now i'm going to have to search for that too.

chicago kevin, Tuesday, 8 January 2008 02:10 (sixteen years ago) link

wow, that video looks REALLY dated now.

chicago kevin, Tuesday, 8 January 2008 02:15 (sixteen years ago) link

that video is awesome though, kevin! it was giving me more of a "90s were pretty cool" thing than a "dated" thing.

but yes, rock band members in shorts and whatnot

nabisco, Thursday, 10 January 2008 19:38 (sixteen years ago) link

Def Leppard, Deep Purple, and Jethro Tull.

Motley Crüe and Husker Dü.

It's just because of the names, I don't know any of these bands' music.

Tuomas, Thursday, 10 January 2008 23:09 (sixteen years ago) link

An opposite example: The Smiths and The Cure. Obviously I know that these are different bands with different images, but if just hear their music without any other information, I often mix them up.

Tuomas, Thursday, 10 January 2008 23:13 (sixteen years ago) link

what

Just got offed, Thursday, 10 January 2008 23:28 (sixteen years ago) link

Well, they're both sort of dangly, wailing indie bands with whiny vocalists. Of course if I see their videos I can tell them apart, because one is lead by a goth and the other one by a mod. But there isn't that much difference in the music.

Albert Finney / Brian Cox - who don't really look that similar to me, but I often get them confused. Particularly after watching the 2nd and 3rd Bourne movies over the past two days where they played similar-ish roles.

Michael Jacksons Beat It & Billy Jean

Ste, Monday, 14 January 2008 09:49 (sixteen years ago) link

But they're easy to tell apart: "Beat It" begins with a guitar riff and "Billy Jean" with a synth riff.

Tuomas, Monday, 14 January 2008 11:35 (sixteen years ago) link

it's not so much when i'm listening to them, it's more when i'm talking about them to someone else. Or if Beat It comes on the radio I say "oh i think this is my fave jacko tune" and then realise its not, it's billy jean.

Ste, Monday, 14 January 2008 11:39 (sixteen years ago) link

Yeah, I can get that. I always mix "We Are the World" and Jacko's "Heal the World" in my head, to the extent of singing the lyrics of the latter to the tune of the former.
