So while having dinner with Sir Richard Branson on Necker Island, his private hangout in the British Virgin Islands, I finally got to ask him a question I've always wanted to ask.

We had been talking about life, fatherhood, kids, spiritual ideas, business and more. And I finally asked him...

"Richard, there has been so many theories about what makes you tick. I mean the 300+ companies, taking man to space, and all the other crazy epic things you do. But if YOU had to boil it down to ONE thing. Just one thing. What would your advice be?"

And this is what Branson told me. (Note that I'm paraphrasing a bit, because I did not record this.)

"It's all about finding and hiring people smarter than you. Getting them to join your business. And giving them good work. Then getting out of their way. And trusting them. You have to get out of the way so YOU can focus on the bigger vision. That's important. And here's the main thing....you must make them see their work as a MISSION."

I was flying out to Dubai the next day to deliver a TEDx talk on "How to Build the World's Greatest Workplace". Richard's quote seemed so perfect for the talk. I asked him permission to quote him and he said yes.

I'll leave it to you to interprete Branson's words in your own way. Share your comments :-)

Note on the pic below: It was taken on my iPhone the next day. It shows Richard scribbling down ideas in his notebook during a brainstorming session.

you'd think if Branson wanted to give you permission to quote him in a speech, he'd at least ask you not to paraphrase it

do you think your friendship would survive it?

mh, Tuesday, 3 April 2012 19:39 (twelve years ago) link

tbh i am kind of worried i would enjoy it so much it would kill my cynicism

♆ (gr8080), Tuesday, 3 April 2012 19:55 (twelve years ago) link

some days, I would happily take the challenge if someone offered something that might bust my cynicism

The idea behind this is that when you surround yourself with images [that you’ve torn out from various magazines] of who you want to become, what you want to have, where you want to live, or where you want to vacation, your life changes to match those images and those desires.

Sweet grief! I have seen magazines. They do not contain images of "who I want to become." This is why I read books. The kind without pictures on every page.

dont forget abt the people who do it via youtube slideshow, as covered upthread.

it reminds me of friends i had growing up who had 40 year old moms that would tape photos to the fridge of 20 year old models they cut out of Cosmo and Redbook, as a way of somehow motivating them to lose weight

i'm a visual person, and visual reminders can be effective motivators... but still, the whole practice of anyone participating in something like this after finishing the 9th grade is such a bummer to me

A.K.A. "treasure mapping"

shur fine (am0n), Tuesday, 3 April 2012 21:00 (twelve years ago) link

http://www.happiness-information.com/treasure-mapping.html

What is Treasure Mapping?

Treasure Mapping is the process of creating a photo collage which includes images and words that express your goals and desires. This type of collage can also be referred to as a Vision Board, Story Board or a Dream Board.
In Creative Visualization, Shakti Gawain writes that, “You can make a treasure map by drawing or painting it, or by making a collage using pictures and words cut from magazines, books or cards, photographs, drawings, and so on.” Shakti explains that, “A treasure map is an actual, physical picture of your desired reality. Basically the treasure map should show you in your ideal scene, with your goal fully realized.”

While creating a Treasure Map can assist you in manifesting desires of your personality (usually material items), Treasure Mapping is also a great way to explore the desires of your soul. Thru your intention, Treasure Mapping can call forth desires that live deep within your heart, desires that are waiting to be remembered or even awakened for the first time.

its funny that something first grade teachers came up with to entertain kids during recess on a rain day is like something that people now base entire careers and workshops aroud

"If you don't stand for something, you'll fall for anything"

hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.........

shur fine (am0n), Tuesday, 3 April 2012 21:45 (twelve years ago) link

that is the least true truism on Earth

IME, ppl who don't stand for anything are ruthlessly engaged in the pursuit of self-preservation and self-advancement and will go out of their way to use others to further their careers and then abandon them once they've outlived their usefulness; they are among the LEAST gullible ppl and spend all of their time maneuvering the more gullible into doing shit for them

almost put this on ILP, but I'm endlessly fascinated with a subculture of wedding photographers that (in my mind) bleeds deeply into the self-help culture - workshops about personal branding and marketing, 'beautiful people'-speak, etc.

Massimo and I discuss the “simulation argument” — the case that it’s roughly 20% likely that we live in a computer simulation

i can't put myself thru another tawdry video today but 20%? where the fuck have they pulled a figure from??

i have read the simulation argument in its original form and they are pulling that number out of their asses.

yeah i've read simulation arguments and i suspect that's where the figure came from

They are ignoring Havgradot's Law:

"Numbers pulled out of one's ass are always subject to signifigant rounding errors."

Rationality: You'll practice many specific techniques (e.g. Fermi calculations, applying Bayes' theorem and cognitive biases to daily life, seeing how using fungibility can boost your goal achievement); develop a map of your rationality strengths and gaps; and learn how to continue learning rationality after the program.

Meanwhile, on some cars... (Austerity Ponies), Monday, 30 April 2012 17:21 (twelve years ago) link

would really like to know how to apply Bayes' theorem to daily life. Would need a big lookup table for prior and conditional probabilities of real-life events.
