emil.y! i've never heard a version like that -- thank you! so sprightly but dignified.

Lech, I first heard either that particular version or a very similar arrangement in the British Library - they had an exhibition on linguistic changes in English, and that audio exhibit sent a shiver up my spine. It actually took a while for me to cotton on that they'd used it in The Wicker Man, I thought the familiarity was some sort of pagan ancestral kinship...

That sounds like an extremely memorable exhibit. How lucky you were to have seen it! All I know about that song is that it's purportedly the first song written in English, thereby making it the oldest known English folk song. I don't know anything about how that came to be known or decided, though.

decided, more likely

I suppose there's a reasonable amount of historical detritus left from that period, so they'd have a good stab at being right. Though there's always a certain amount of elision and elitism - 'first' is accepted as 'first with a written record', which is obviously going to err towards the educated and the ability to create and keep such records.

Yeah, that's what I meant -- it's the Sharp approach, right? I'm trying to remember things I learned when I read Electric Eden but my brain doesn't retain information unless I use it immediately (and even then...), so I only vaguely remember that there was a Cecil Sharp, and he favored a very scholarly approach to folk music.

why is this not a public holiday?

That is a very good question. Drinking opportunities? Check. Parade opportunities, check. What more do they want?

the goal of peace and full employment is a perfect reason to take a break from said employment and enjoy some peace

We have a bank holiday around this time, though every year someone says that there are too many too close to the same time, and we should get rid of it. Funnily enough, it's always the one that's related to the workers' cause that they suggest scrapping.

Picnic today! Weather is bleak, but cooperative enough.

Happy May Day, ILX!
If you see an old man in a clay suit and he tries to approach you, do not engage him in conversation. He has nothing but bad news and this is a good day. Enjoy it!

A tisket, a tasket, a green and yellow basket, I wrote a letter to my love, and on the way she ran into an old man in a clay suit.

I love May, May is my month! I'm going to be the most Laurel possible, this month, and take everything in stride and bend it to my purposes. And love myself.
― But not someone who should be dead anyway (Laurel)
Still true. Sniff. And a timely reminder, in all this upheaval.

Bumping both May Day threads because that is just how much I love this particular holiday. To rain, renewal, and ritual sacrifice -- happy May Day!
