it turns out i didn't really care about steve albini. who knew? i mean i don't want anyone to die. it just didn't make me sad. seems like he had a good time. good life. lots of friends. poker. i liked big black. back in the old days. but the last shellac album i bought came out 24 years ago. and other then some nina nastasia albums that i liked and that he put through his echo chamber i never thought about him much unless people were complaining about him online. i think the internet has numbed me to famous people death. they die so often. there are so many of them! how many times can i be gutted? it would be a full-time job. rest in power, dabney coleman.

This thread is a paradox, because posting to it requires that we care enough to come to this thread and make posts - worded carefully enough to sufficiently express our lack of care (Pro-tip: Be sure to lower-case his name!)
The only time I ever care about a celebrity dying is when I feel like they were someone with a lot more to offer the world. Maybe that's insensitive of me, but I guess I don't really care all that much about people I don't know dying (of natural causes) to begin with. Plus, with celebrities, most of their personae are so carefully managed - we can't even believe what we know about them is true. When a creative person I care about dies, I celebrate their life by digging deep into the art they left behind, and I've enjoyed doing this with Steve Albini. He made some good music, produced engineered some really good music, and the story arc of his life is interesting and inspiring to me, as I like stories of redemption and in my eyes he successfully redeemed himself. It's nice to see the scenario of "Famous person starts out nice; gets rich and becomes a reactionary asshole" play out in reverse sometimes.
― beard papa, Monday, 20 May 2024 17:58 (one week ago) link
he did cool stuff. i have enjoyed his music. especially when i was a teen. i just thought i would feel something. it surprised me. death on the internet has definitely done something to me though. maybe its just overload and my brain is shutting down a little now. i have my own problems with depression and sadness and i think it would be best for me to steer clear of memorials and tribute threads and facebook reminiscences for everyone cool who dies. i still miss jonathan demme. (i do most things lower-case online cuz its faster.)

i must cosine the not digging overly excessive grief when someone rly old dies (or in the same vein any kind of celebration when an awful person dies old and unpunished)

i pretty much draw a blank when it comes to feeling anything about any semi-famous culture person dying at this point. i did like reading about albini after his death, in the way that it's nice to read remembrances from people who admired the deceased. i get that he meant a lot to .. don't mean to sound glib here but .. "band dudes". i have a few friends rip-ing someone every week or so and i don't understand it tbh. i just feel like i need to save my mourning energy for the time when someone i'm close to passes. i've got to be careful about how i spend my emotional energy, it isn't an unlimited resource.

a polka version of a GnR song? fuck offfffff
I'm only a fan of that stuff if the cover is like an enthusiastic rendition of the song that just happens to infuse a different genre into the mix, and not the average Youtube attempt, aka "OH LOOK AT US, how WACKY, we did SLAYER's RAINING BLOOD as a Chicago blues song - pls smash the like button for other weird experiments from me and my zany bandmates, look at me I'm picking my nose aren't I crazzzzzzzzzy".

to be fair, i don't think anyone really "cares" about wacky covers. any more than they care about post-donnie darko slowcore new wave/grunge covers. they are just part of the landscape.

i mean the dickies probably perfected the wacky cover in 1979. or the flying lizards did. i was a big fan of golden shower of hits by circle jerks. and "i'm not lisa" by killdozer. but by the time you get to that carpenters covers album you have reached gen x overload and its all downhill from there.
