just to go back to the story up thread lol you cannot "trace an IP" to someone's address. Internet do not work that way! if you took that IP to the ISP that supplied it with a warrant? they may then hand over user info. but it's not like fucking Hackers or CSI.

Una Stubbs' Tears (Trayce), Wednesday, 17 October 2012 21:46 (thirteen years ago)

Yeah, he's definitely glossing over something there. Maybe he doxxed them

stet, Wednesday, 17 October 2012 21:52 (thirteen years ago)

He was getting trolled off Twitter as well, though, in places where you can trace IP addresses. Then you could cross-match them with other non-troll incoming IP addresses, such as friendly communications from his friend, the troll's dad.

Does anyone know if the Twitter API lets clients use the new(ish) "search tweets of people you follow" function? It's the only reason to use the Twitter website, I think.

I was at the Job Centre yesterday, and woohoo my life is complete, because now apparently I can follow them on Twitter, because each Job Centres now has a Twitter account.

someone explain to me the point of 'favoriting' someone else's tweets -- like people will favorite mine (and sometimes also retweet, sometimes not, sometimes retweet and not favorite), but i just retweet things i like and never favorite them, should i feel like a dick? or is it just a way of bookmarking stuff so that it's easy to find later?

2 Celloz (some dude), Thursday, 20 December 2012 20:37 (thirteen years ago)

it's really easy to accidentally favorite things on the phone, happens to me a lot.

Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Thursday, 20 December 2012 20:39 (thirteen years ago)

more like bookmarking ime, but i'm sure diff ppl use it for diff reasons

❏❐❑❒ (gr8080), Thursday, 20 December 2012 20:39 (thirteen years ago)

yeah the bookmark thing I guess

These are my every day balloons (Ste), Thursday, 20 December 2012 20:40 (thirteen years ago)

its a way to acknowledge that you like a tweet without broadcasting it to all your followers. i favorite any tweet i particularly like but i only retweet if the tone & content still make sense in the context of my own feed

ciderpress, Thursday, 20 December 2012 20:41 (thirteen years ago)

a fav can be a a way to say 'i like this,' a wink, a nod, a high-five, a gesture of agreement or support, or just an acknowledgement of when someone @replies to you directly

i don't think of favorites as bookmarks, i just like awarding stars to ppl

fueled by satanism, violence, and sodomy (elmo argonaut), Thursday, 20 December 2012 21:01 (thirteen years ago)

right yeah i guess it can be a private signal thing, which is how i tended to take it (stupid question but can other people see your favorites? i haven't tried)

2 Celloz (some dude), Thursday, 20 December 2012 21:09 (thirteen years ago)

I used iffft to send faves to Pinboard and can't get out the bookmarking habit. RIP

fueled by satanism, violence, and sodomy (elmo argonaut), Thursday, 20 December 2012 21:11 (thirteen years ago)

I use them most of the time as pathetic stamps of approval and done of the time as bookmarks. Keep 'em guessing.

Alba, Thursday, 20 December 2012 21:18 (thirteen years ago)

Some of the time.

Alba, Thursday, 20 December 2012 21:18 (thirteen years ago)

they can be like signing off a text message exchange with something slightly concrete, a x or a 'see you later!', to imply without stating that they are the end of the exchange, that obviously these things need to end rather than continuing forever. you favourite to punctuate. for me they are sincerely favouriting, though. i am reading a tweet & in my john mccain interior monologue voice saying i approve this message.

kristof-profiting-from-a-childs-illiteracy.html (schlump), Thursday, 20 December 2012 21:33 (thirteen years ago)

I thought the point of favouriting is for other people to read and enjoy your history of favourites

you, your max is on fire (flamboyant goon tie included), Thursday, 20 December 2012 21:43 (thirteen years ago)

i think maybe once i looked at somebody else's favourites & it reminded me of the times i have started sentences with "i was watching this featurette on the seinfeld dvd-", just the depth of aloneness implicit in how i spent my time

kristof-profiting-from-a-childs-illiteracy.html (schlump), Thursday, 20 December 2012 21:47 (thirteen years ago)

i mostly favourite tweets when i'm on the move and they have a link to something i want to read or download when i'm at a proper computer; sometimes when it's a tweet/quote i might want to find quickly later; occasionally if it's a particularly sparkling turn of phrase that i just like a lot

lex pretend, Thursday, 20 December 2012 21:50 (thirteen years ago)

sometimes if it's a mutual follower i rarely have cause to actually communicate with, it's a sort of signal to say "hey i still like & appreciate your tweets even though i never respond to them"

lex pretend, Thursday, 20 December 2012 21:51 (thirteen years ago)

yeah i guess i just rarely feel the desire to signal these things re: a tweet that don't also just want to retweet

2 Celloz (some dude), Thursday, 20 December 2012 21:54 (thirteen years ago)

do you think anybody thinks of their /favorites page with the kind of tumblr attitude of having ~curated~ a repository of premium content

kristof-profiting-from-a-childs-illiteracy.html (schlump), Thursday, 20 December 2012 21:54 (thirteen years ago)

I favorite tweets that are an exceptional use of the medium.

Jeff, Thursday, 20 December 2012 21:55 (thirteen years ago)

apologies if this is too old man/cloud but anything in the way of "favorites" or "likes" that takes the utility of these kinds of sites into a further level of abstraction just makes it seem more like a video game high score thing and is not interesting to me at all
