yeah I loved AB's sciencey stuff, I always enjoyed his breakdowns of why this hardware vs that hardware, that was always cool.

when he smoked the salmon in the hotel room, that was pretty macguyver. and the 'jet engine' ahi tuna on top of the charcoal chimney was badass.

Alton Brown was a tv production dude who thought he could make a successful how-to show about food. It's basically "alton shows you some facts plus here's how I read you should do this"

Isn't Frontera Grill awful as well? Aren't all of these food network restaurants necessarily awful?

Holy shit, no. Frontera Grill isn't a Food Network restaurant. Rick Bayless opened Frontera Grill in the 80s. Wikipedia says he's been on Iron Chef and a guest judge on some stuff and then he was on celebrity Top Chef a few years ago. He's got a long-running PBS cooking show, too. Also Frontera is crazy super good (questions of authenticity aside).

After finding out AB is a Christian fundamentalist I've been put off by him. He comes across as so smug and douchey outside of Good Eats as well.

It's worth watching Bayless's cooking show, if only for the weird interactions with his daughter in the earlier episodes.

I'm depressed by the speed at which Brown's lost hair.

I watched bayless's show for a couple episodes before realizing:
1. Hey, that's his daughter
2. Holy shit, I better stop perving because I think she's 15 in this episode

He definitely has his 'uh' moments, but yeah, Good Eats kinda gave him just the right vehicle. Besides, if he's driven to it all by God's Eternal Love to show you the advantage of how best to cook and eat elements of His creation, fuck, I'll take it.

xp re: Lanie Bayless - Yeah, it's his daughter and their interactions are still kind of weird and she is also really awkward but that makes me have sincere affection towards her. Also I have eaten at just about every Rick Bayless restaurant (unless he's got some outlets in the 'burbs) and I'm an irredeemable stan and at this point, he could fart on a tortilla and I'd probably try it.

carl agatha, Thursday, 15 November 2012 18:56 (twelve years ago) link

I am certain Guy Fieri has farted on a tortilla and served it to a customer

xp WAIT Alton Brown is a fundie???? I used to watch Good Eats all the time and then his schtick got kind of old (no, I am NOT going to cut up a frisbee to use as a stick blender shield before pureeing soup what the FUCK is wrong with you???) and then he just really started to annoy me so I feel very vindicated to hear that he's a Christian fundamentalist because it's like somehow I knew all along.

He's mentioned in interviews that he and his family say grace before meals, but I've never heard any mention of "fundie." And if he is, he's never put a bit of it on tv, which makes him okay by me. I'm not going to ding the guy for having religious faith that he practices outside his sphere of fame.

Bayless really creeps me out in a yoga-sleazy sort of way but Frontera was pretty good when I ate there and his torta place in Ohare is absolutely the best airport food ever, to the point that I'd probably eat there if it wasn't in an airport.

joygoat, Thursday, 15 November 2012 19:08 (twelve years ago) link

I have him because I was all set to go to Frontera and it was closed on a Sunday. What kind of restaurant is closed on Sunday?

hate not have

ENBB, Thursday, 15 November 2012 19:10 (twelve years ago) link

carl agatha, I guess I picked on Bayless because of his frozen foods line of products. I ate at an iteration of the Frontera Grill in CHI and was not blown away, but it WAS at least better than donkey sauce. It was lunch and I ordered some kind of cart sampler, too, so it could have been my lack of ordering skills.

Mozzarella i Fieri (Sufjan Grafton), Thursday, 15 November 2012 19:12 (twelve years ago) link

The Frontera frozen pizzas are really good. Actually, I like the sauces too.
