Kind of scared to read the Frugal Gourmet article because of how much time I spent watching that show when I was a kid. It really hit me with this amazing sense that people ate other things that I didn't even know existed, like garlic and actual fish and such.
I swear that and Yo MTV Raps were like the two most influential shows from my childhood.

as I like to relate, I read a Cook's Illustrated editorial once where Kimball wrote admiringly about the practice of chopping off a thief's hands.
didn't read that but maybe it was tongue-in-cheek?

it was part of a larger musing about how important and wonderful hands are, and how there was a certain respect for hands something something. It just was bonkers. It didn't scan as sarcasm.

Applebees has terrible food BUT they have a lot of draft beers and a big drink menu. So if I had a gift card I know what I would put it towards.

1 cup rice1 can Campbell's Chicken Noodle Soup1 cup water
it was fucking good, too

My mom and I had some financially tight years when I was a kid and she would make elbow macaroni mixed with canned cream of mushroom soup for dinner A LOT and I loved it* so when our grade school teacher interviewed us to find out what our favorite recipes were to then publish the findings in the paper, that was what I told them and my mother was mortified that I had outed her as a canned-soup-and-macaroni-cooking mother.
*I still love canned cream of mushroom soup.

Like, other kids were hilariously butchering recipes for chicken and DUMPLINGS! or hamburgers or lasagna and I'm all "cook some macaroni and open the soup and stir them together!"

Yep. Cream of mushroom was poured on everything during the Ford-Carter-Reagan era.

ugh I hate it. I know that most people doens't think it tastes like much but it tastes like dying to me. I can sort of stomach really small pieces of it as long as it's hidden but that's about it. I'm totally down with cream of mushroom soup though. I've seen my mother cook exactly one time in my entire life and it was a cream of mushroom based tuna noodle casserole and it was divine.
