It's not really the politics that bugs me -- it's the close proximity to Lileks.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Saturday, 29 January 2005 04:36 (nineteen years ago) link

Lileks the DEMON DANCER OF DOOOOOOOM. And design.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 29 January 2005 04:42 (nineteen years ago) link

Maybe he hooked up with Lileks due to fond memories of This Island Earth:

Brilliant! They're both going on my wishlist.

Lileks did look pretty stylin' 30-ish years ago. Like the bassist for some band that would be first on a 5-band bill headlined by Franz Ferdinand.

This is an MST3K hread that hits most of the high points, Manos, Mitchell, Brain that Wouldn't Die etc.

But where's Hercules Against the Moon Men???

So does Lileks force Mike to talk about Lileks' daughter and shit?

Not bad for '74 in an earth-tone way. Maybe he should just shave his head -- Mike seems to know how to wear it short with it comes to balding.

So does Lileks force Mike to talk about Lileks' daughter and shit?

Good lord, I hope not.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 29 January 2005 12:02 (nineteen years ago) link

...anyway, pre-ordered Happy Kitty Bunny Pony and also noticed Mike's other books are available for extremely cheap used via Amazon sellers, so I'd say pick those up if you've not already. I still hadn't got Death Rat! so I've schnagged a copy for under a buck -- with shipping still only $4.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 29 January 2005 12:14 (nineteen years ago) link

Dude has a serious chin-butt. And it seems to have only grown in buttiness since the seventies -- what the fuck, has he been cultivating it? Exercising those chin glutes? For the lay-dayz?

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Saturday, 29 January 2005 12:21 (nineteen years ago) link

Botox, my friend.

Contents of the next DVD packet are announced:

As we reported earlier, Mystery Science Theater 3000 Collection, Volume 7 is due out in April. While Rhino couldn't confirm an exact date for us, industry insiders are telling us that it is slated for release on April 19th. The DVD set will contain (hold on to your hat):

episode 407- THE KILLER SHREWS (with short: JUNIOR RODEO DAREDEVILS)
episode 408- HERCULES UNCHAINED
episode 410- HERCULES AGAINST THE MOON MEN
episode 816- PRINCE OF SPACE

A bonus feature will be ASSIGNMENT: VENEZUELA, the short originally MSTed for the ill-fated CD-ROM project and which was never shown on television. Rhino has confirmed for us that this bonus will contain the contents of the entire "Venezuela" tape currently available from the Info Club, which also includes the shorts CENTURY 21 CALLING and A CASE OF SPRING FEVER.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 12 February 2005 00:57 (nineteen years ago) link

First time Comedy Central and Sci-Fi episodes are made available together! Three Joels and a Mike. Junior Rodeo Daredevils is a classic short, both Hercules episodes are treats and hey, Prince of Space...

"HAH! HAH! HAH! HAH! HAH!"

Three bonus shorts all winners as well.

two months pass...
So set seven is out and Mike's new book on design stuff is out or about to be but this general catchup story contains the new kicker, via Mike talking about one of his upcoming new commentaries for Legend Films a la Reefer Madness:

Nelson has thought plenty about his next target, perhaps the worst film of all time.

"I have actually dared to take on what some people may consider hallowed ground," Nelson said. "I'm doing (director Ed Wood's) Plan Nine From Outer Space."

!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 23 April 2005 23:28 (nineteen years ago) link

Haven't they gone on record about how P9 is by far not the worst movie ever? Where's your PR now, eh?

Anyway, no reason why he shouldn't, although I'd rather he found another film which is interesting but very hard to watch without commentary, like Reefer Madness.

Casuistry (Chris P), Saturday, 23 April 2005 23:42 (nineteen years ago) link

hmmm. could be OK, could be not OK. can't see it being great, per se, if only because that movie's so damn funny on its own.

I am watching a "rough cut" of the theatre segments of Swamp Diamonds, which includes stuff that happens "during commercials", some first takes, etc.

Bless this internet!

Casuistry (Chris P), Sunday, 19 February 2006 11:23 (eighteen years ago) link

I really need to get on the DAP tip with this stuff. I do love how it's starting to leak out more with these rough cuts.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 19 February 2006 15:48 (eighteen years ago) link

haven't read the whole thread but just in case, MST3K def does make the transatlantic humour jump. i was a limey on temporary secondment to your fair shores in the early '90's and it quickly became mandatory viewing for me on comedy central. the giggle-rating was kind of kept at a simmer all the way through but they'd poleaxe you with tangential gag-bolts at pretty regular intervals.

when they broke out an Andy Capp gag from nowhere that was so obscure that no-one who wasn't from england would've got it, i knew i was in the presence of pure genius.

went down well with nachos and a case of bud

tremendoid (tremendoid), Sunday, 19 February 2006 20:13 (eighteen years ago) link

Nedrick, bring a hard drive with you when you visit next, I will hook you up. I've got three "rough cuts", but the other two are from Season 10 and are thus less "priority". You sit through a lot of the movie to get the handful of random bits you haven't seen before, but it's interesting enough.

Casuistry (Chris P), Sunday, 19 February 2006 20:17 (eighteen years ago) link

I love you, sir. But I hope that was already clear.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 20 February 2006 22:06 (eighteen years ago) link

"Permission to kiss you on the lips, sir!"
"Denied!"

(Every episode including KTMAs and every random bit of extra comes out to around 160+ Gb.)

Casuistry (Chris P), Monday, 20 February 2006 22:12 (eighteen years ago) link

That's nothing. I should finally get a separate drive. Will plot with you later about this as my trip plans come together.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 20 February 2006 22:20 (eighteen years ago) link

two weeks pass...
Meantime, I give to you all word of box set number 9:

Our friends at Rhino Home Video have given us the list of episodes to be included in the Mystery Science Theater 3000 Collection: Volume 9 DVD set. They are... wait for it....

104- WOMEN OF THE PREHISTORIC PLANET
207- WILD REBELS
613- THE SINISTER URGE (with short: KEEPING CLEAN AND NEAT)
812- THE INCREDIBLY STRANGE CREATURES WHO STOPPED LIVING AND BECAME MIXED-UP ZOMBIES

As a bonus for "Women of the Prehistoric Planet," Rhino has taped a short intro to the episode with Irene Tsu, who played Linda in the movie. There will also definitely be a bonus intro to "The Sinister Urge" with Conrad Brooks, who played Connie.

Women of the Prehistoric Planet is of course the real kicker since that's only the second Josh Weinstein-era episode (after The Crawling Hand) to get a video/DVD release. And the other three are all winners, so yay! These bonus intros they mention could be fun.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 12 March 2006 15:01 (eighteen years ago) link

Also, here's a good treat that provides a not-often-heard take on the show -- Jim Mallon, the show's producer and o' course the voice of Gypsy, who got interviewed by Rhino recently for its podcasts. Give it an ear!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 15 March 2006 05:00 (eighteen years ago) link

So I finally have all the MST3K episodes (excluding the ultra-early KTMA ones that no one has), specials, and ephemera in handy-to-transport AVIs.

What do I win? Does Cthulhu open up a dimensional gate so I can proceed to Level Two?

What are people's thoughts on Mike's Legend Films commentaries? I only have Carnival of Souls and it's decent, though nowhere near MST3K quality.

The idea they had to sell their services as an extra commentary track for regular DVDs was brilliant, sad that nobody's taken them up on it. Maybe they could do a Kevin Smith and just record commentaries for current movies then create a subscription download service?

zaxxon25 (zaxxon25), Tuesday, 27 June 2006 16:39 (eighteen years ago) link

Destroy - Pearl, Bobo and Brain Guy. The movies and riffing on the later Sci Fi episodes were still pretty decent, but the interstitial shit is just tedious.

I'm still missing several of what DAP marks with a "T" and possibly and "S" or two. But I haven't been tearing my hairs out over it, admittedly.

Anyway, yes, I have been enjoying the Buddha nature for most of 2006, welcome to the club!

Eric H. (Eric H.), Wednesday, 28 June 2006 00:43 (eighteen years ago) link

Shorts. So many shorts. I think some of these are on Youtube as well, if you happen to prefer Youtube.

I love this series, but being in the UK I've only managed to see three full episodes(plus the movie, which was the only one which they've ever been allowed to show on normal tv) due to the frustration involved in trying to download 700meg files on capped broadband.

But I do love me some Mitchell.
"I'm King Hussain!"
"Did I tell you I'm Italian? Let me restate that!"

I finally rented Manos from Netflix, and I actually couldn't get through it. Not to knock the riffing, but the movie is just so freaking boring. I think I got through about five minutes of women rolling around in the dirt, before I turned it off. The shorts work much better for my attention span.

And yeah, trying to download these things over broadband was a big pain for me too. I gave up a while ago.

Vinnie (vprabhu), Monday, 3 July 2006 18:20 (eighteen years ago) link
