How expensive is it to rent here compared to, say, Portland? Or Seattle?
― Ronnie Thunders, Friday, 24 April 2009 21:08 (fifteen years ago) link
I rented a two-bedroom 1200 sq foot apt in the Baker neighborhood for $850.

What are the pluses and minuses of living in Denver? We really liked the city and almost vaguely thought we would want to live there, but it might have been like that Cleveland episode of 30 Rock.

Where do you live now?
― kkvgz, Thursday, 19 August 2010 12:17 (fourteen years ago) link
Pluses:- Small enough to get around easily- Feels like a community- Clean, organized, nice to look out- Mountains nearby- Okay music scene- Pretty good restaurants- Mountains nearby- Not too expensive
Cons:- Pretty much the only big city around in like five hundred miles--I don't care about this, but some people do
― homosexual II, Thursday, 19 August 2010 14:17 (fourteen years ago) link
i honestly didnt realize there were any other denver ilxors. wow, i am a fool!
oh, another cons: lots of mountain BRO culture and hippies around. i dont really mind these innocent folks, but some people get upset about it.
― homosexual II, Thursday, 19 August 2010 14:18 (fourteen years ago) link
i don't live in denver, but i work there. i think denver's cool, can't really put my finger on any *real* cons. I think compared to some cities, it might seems a tad boring/personality-less, but once you dig a little deeper there's plenty going on. some people complain about traffic (sometimes I do, too), but really, if you've lived in any other big-ish city, the traffic is not really remarkable.

Brooklyn. New York City often feels like too much for me although it's unlikely that I'll pick up and move to Denver.
Good things I noticed:Never felt too crowdedNice residential neighborhoods right in the city within a walk or short drive of commercial areasLots of green spaceLove the stadiums being right downtown in a nice commercial area (we got $4 rockpile tickets, sat at a local brewery for a bit, waltzed right in for the 3rd-8th innings of the game, and then walked out)Community -- my friend who I was staying with had several neighbors he was friendly with. I also noticed that it was easy for him to get several other people to show up for the game on short notice.People generally care a lot about fitness and the outdoors
Negatives:Did seem a little clean-cut and unvariedSome parts were a little too emptyFelt like maybe it could get boring

This like us when we went out to New Mexico. Grass is always greener, amirite. Would still SRSLY love to live out there sometime though!

yeah, i think you can definitely stumble across parts of Denver that just feel like dull office parks where no one ever goes. but a bunch of the neighborhoods (wash park, s. broadway, highlands) really have nice, classic atmospheres. and downtown is surprisingly packed with stuff these days -- tons of great restaurants, awesome places to drink beer (a big part of my job currently is this: www.denverbeerfest.com), one of the better bookstores in the world ... oh, lotsa medicinal marijuana these days too.
― tylerw, Thursday, 19 August 2010 15:19 (fourteen years ago) link
dunno, i think one of the main problems with the perception of Denver, is that there's not a lot of romance/mystique surrounding it. when you tell people you live/work in Denver they're like "oh ..."
― tylerw, Thursday, 19 August 2010 15:23 (fourteen years ago) link
oh this place is wonderful for last minute-ness.
also denver used to have more mystique, but then they tore down buckingham square!
― homosexual II, Thursday, 19 August 2010 15:34 (fourteen years ago) link
tyler, where do you live if you work here but don't live here? this is intriguing
― homosexual II, Thursday, 19 August 2010 15:38 (fourteen years ago) link
oh, i just live in Longmont. i originally moved to/worked in boulder, and then my wife and i wanted to buy a house, and longmont is much cheaper than boulder. and then i ended up getting a job in Denver. fortunately i work from home half of the time, so i don't have to make the commute every day.
― tylerw, Thursday, 19 August 2010 15:43 (fourteen years ago) link
It's definitely a place where you kind of have to know a local to find the good stuff. Lots of people come here and stay downtown, wander around LoDo and the 16th street mall and crap and that's their only impression of the city. There's a lot more. It could stand to be more interesting, but the good news is that it's getting more and more so--there's a lot of support for local music and art, the weather doesn't totally suck, and there is the world's largest hobby train shoppe on south broadway (according to its signage).
― homosexual II, Thursday, 19 August 2010 15:44 (fourteen years ago) link
yikes, that is a long drive. so people in longmont think that denver is boring?
― homosexual II, Thursday, 19 August 2010 15:45 (fourteen years ago) link
haha, no, i don't think people in Longmont think Denver is boring. Friends on east/west coast might think Denver is boring.

well you can just brag that you're that much closer to the lyons pinball museum!
― homosexual II, Thursday, 19 August 2010 15:49 (fourteen years ago) link
are you involved with the local art scene? another thing i'm working on now is Denver Arts Week ... I can never tell whether people think it's a cool event, or just sort of lame. i feel like they don't do a good job of really engaging with the arts community, it just ends up being "there are galleries and museums" check em out.
― tylerw, Thursday, 19 August 2010 15:52 (fourteen years ago) link
however, when I made Adam start this thread in 2005 I was WAY more into Denver then. When I first moved here, in 2002 it was amazing. It was dirt cheap (I shared an apartment and my rent was $200/month) and there were all sorts of interesting things going on. I am sure there are interesting things still going on, but I'm just older and more into staying home and grumping around.
Another thing is that it's very easy to meet people here. Folks are interested in getting to know you. I definitely hear from friends who have moved to other places that they miss that about Denver.

ha! maybe I'll apply. i used to write quite a bit for them. don't know if i'd actually like doing it though. (not that I'm terribly qualified.)
― tylerw, Monday, 13 September 2010 21:53 (fourteen years ago) link
Since when would being terribly qualified matter? If you're funny like O'neal, you can rise from being a city editor to Head Newswire Editors and Deliverer of Snark, to the point where people complain when you're not doing Newswire updates

These things may be entirely my imagination, and I have no idea if the people I saw were even Denverites, but I was in Denver's airport last night (on the way from Philadelphia to Albuquerque) and I don't think I've ever seen so many guys striding around like cowboys. It's like there really is this macho thing going on that is totally not the urban sort of macho I'm used to, more ranch macho. I also swear I have never had so many women looking at me with appreciation at one time (not counting when I dance, when women who otherwise would never notice me suddenly start smiling at me). Is the male-to-female ratio really that tough there? But as I say, it could just be my imagination or at least the filters I had on regarding Denver. Plus I was just exhausted and desperate to get home.
