it is kind of bullshit if you love the show and consider the books beneath you. They're just better. I'm not going to get het up about it though

don't even consider them beneath me, just know they are something you read at the pace of a sports biography rather than joyce or whatever.

plus tv is a more generally easy medium than literature.

not to even open that can of worms... just basically am surprised someone would lambast people from above for not reading this series of books.

I like the show but I'm not into fantasy enough to set aside the time to read 4000 pages on Westeros instead of 4000 pages of stuff that's already in my lineup and more my thing.

the books aren't fine lit, but they are absolutely better than the tv show. Most of the places where the tv show deviates from the novels are missteps.

since the tv show hasn't done the 4th book yet, it remains to be seen whether they can improve upon it or not. I'm not super optimistic. I guess they could find a way to make both the 4th and 5th books shorter, that would be an improvment...

BTW, I got copies of the first 4 books for Christmas and am eagerly looking forward to re-reading them

the showrunners seem pretty savvy, i have some faith in them to cut the bullshit when they get to the parts where the books slow down

More or less everything good in show is straight from the books, and they've added a lot of questionable shit. You're kidding yourself if you think otherwise

ppl who like the books must be liberally skipping sentences, paragraphs and entire chapters of tedious, boring, repetitive prose

the books are pretty great imo but i prefer the show slightly

i really could only get as far as i could (first third of fourth book iirc? maybe didn't even finish the third book) skimming

i like both. more lemon cakes in the books which is nice

they are both pretty much exactly equal in terms of quality

Books don't have terrible sexposition scenes

On the flip side, the tv show avoids GRRM's habit of repeating everything a million times

Seriously those last two books could have easily been one book.

The show does a pretty good job of paring down the books, so I actually look forward to seeing them condense the 4th and 5th.

The TV Show comes out a measured pace, it might even finish by the time the books do - if I buy the existing books I'll just be jonesing for the next five years.
