The bile this shit inspires is depressing. It was a dick move, completely, totally. But, and I'm saying this as someone who's worked for tips in the past, it was six fucking dollars; let's all relax and try to keep from calling people filth.

I'd be cool with getting tithes if I were a server. 10% of a customer's income sounds nice!

She left a $6 tip on the table for a party of 20?!?!?! Fuck this person with a chainsaw tbqh.
One of the earlier stories mentions that the table had asked for the full bill to be divided up, allegedly to avoid the automatic 18% tip. Bell's portion was $34.93. A $6 tip on that portion is reasonable, but there are still a lot of unknowns in the story. Still, a dick move.

The dick move was the note on the check, which is one step beyond simply not leaving a tip. That's not just being cheap, that's, like, motive. That's: I'm not going to leave the tip, and I'll tell you why, and also I am better than you because I serve God.

xps thing is, it's not just a measly 6 bucks - i doubt this is the first (or last) time this woman has stiffed a waiter or been horribly condescending, it's just the first time she's been publicly shamed for it.
― just1n3, Thursday, 31 January 2013 20:03 (eleven years ago) link
I don't think people should be publicly shamed for being crazy pastors until they are doing things worse than not tipping
― iatee, Thursday, 31 January 2013 20:04 (eleven years ago) link
I'm ok with huge public shamefests for small offenses.
― Dr. Alfred P. Falfa (WilliamC), Thursday, 31 January 2013 20:07 (eleven years ago) link
I think she was publicly shamed for being a complete sanctimonious jerk and/or jerking money out of someone's hands to make a trite and unconvincing point about the way the industry that person works in is run. It's like if your cab got someplace and you just got out and ran away without paying because in your ideal world, there would be a government-provided network of driverless cars paid for out of a tax on greenhouse gas emissions. And PS, God.
I applaud the idea that you can't just go around jerking people around and insulting them and never get called out on it.

― max, Thursday, 31 January 2013 21:43 (eleven years ago) link
Mandatory tips are dumb
Even on smaller, 8-person tables, you'll have others but if you get stiffed on a $100 tab, at most restaurants in the US the serving is losing ~$5-6 for the privilege of waiting on those people. I think in the early '00s I was tipping out 3.5% to the general staff plus 5% of bar sales to service bar.
― Kiarostami bag (milo z), Thursday, 31 January 2013 21:45 (eleven years ago) link
Parties of 6 or more seem to get autotipped everywhere I go at home, also in UK (where it's an automatic service charge).
Strangely, during the time I waited/bussed tables (and also during the 15 years my sister, who sometimes says racist things, was a waitress) I never once heard of this concept of black (or church) people being stingy tippers. So until there were internet messageboards, I did not know this was a thing.
Gawker also covering itself in glory with stereotypey/racisty commenters (though I grant some of them may have only started posting to Gawk on the thread in question).

strange that music and porn were the two subject areas gawker couldn't make work in covering -- both media most beset by mass illegal file sharing, right?. i guess wonkette didn't succeed enough either, but the gawker main covers plenty of that beat itself.
kinda talking out my ass here
― goole, Thursday, 31 January 2013 22:30 (eleven years ago) link
i cant really speak to idolator, for fleshbot (and to some extent wonkette) the big issue was ad sales -- hard to sell ads around politics or porn. for fleshbot in particular, the only ads you can sell are porn ads, so its difficult to do strong independent journalism and still make a living, plus you cant sell inventory across the sites in your network. plus there was a point where gawker was doing some pretty good porn-industry journalism and i think it became clear that... whats the point of having the site if flagship is doing the journalism on its niche
